The use of miniature data loggers is rapidly increasing our understanding of the movements and habitat preferences of pelagic seabirds. However, objectively interpreting behavioural information from the large volumes of highly detailed data collected by such devices can be challenging. We combined three biologging technologies—global positioning system (GPS), saltwater immersion and time–depth recorders—to build a detailed picture of the at-sea behaviour of the Manx shearwater ( Puffinus puffinus ) during the breeding season. We used a hidden Markov model to explore discrete states within the combined GPS and immersion data, and found that behaviour could be organized into three principal activities representing (i) sustained direct flight, (ii) sitting on the sea surface, and (iii) foraging, comprising tortuous flight interspersed with periods of immersion. The additional logger data verified that the foraging activity corresponded well to the occurrence of diving. Applying this approach to a large tracking dataset revealed that birds from two different colonies foraged in local waters that were exclusive, but overlapped in one key area: the Irish Sea Front (ISF). We show that the allocation of time to each activity differed between colonies, with birds breeding furthest from the ISF spending the greatest proportion of time engaged in direct flight and the smallest proportion of time engaged in foraging activity. This type of analysis has considerable potential for application in future biologging studies and in other taxa.

Remaining Useful Life (RUL) estimation is critical in many engineering systems where proper predictive maintenance is needed to increase a unit's effectiveness and reduce time and cost of repairing. Typically for such systems, multiple sensors are normally used to monitor performance, which create difficulties for system state identification. In this paper, we develop a semi-supervised left-to-right constrained Hidden Markov Model (HMM) model, which is effective in estimating the RUL, while capturing the jumps among states in condition dynamics. In addition, based on the HMM model learned from multiple sensors, we build a Partial Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) to demonstrate how such RUL estimation can be effectively used for optimal preventative maintenance decision making. We apply this technique to the NASA Engine degradation data and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we consider the problem of tracking an object and predicting the object's future trajectory in a wide-area environment, with complex spatial layout and the use of multiple sensors/cameras. To solve this problem, there is a need for representing the dynamic and noisy data in the tracking tasks, and dealing with them at different levels of detail. We employ the Abstract Hidden Markov Models (AHMM), an extension of the well-known Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and a special type of Dynamic Probabilistic Network (DPN), as our underlying representation framework. The AHMM allows us to explicitly encode the hierarchy of connected spatial locations, making it scalable to the size of the environment being modeled. We describe an application for tracking human movement in an office-like spatial layout where the AHMM is used to track and predict the evolution of object trajectories at different levels of detail.

We have built an application of speech recognition for Indonesian geography dictionary based on Android operating system, named GAIA. This application uses a smartphone as a device to receive input in the form of a spoken word from a user. The approach used in recognition is Hidden Markov Model which is contained in the Pocketsphinx library. The phonemes used are Indonesian phonemes’ rule. The advantage of this application is that it can be used without internet access. In the application testing, word detection is done with four conditions to determine the level of accuracy. The four conditions are near silent, near noisy, far silent, and far noisy. From the testing and analysis conducted, it can be concluded that GAIA application can be built as a speech recognition application on Android for Indonesian geography dictionary; with the results in the near silent condition accuracy of word recognition reaches an average of 52.87%, in the near noisy reaches an average of 14.5%, in the far silent condition reaches an average of 23.2%, and in the far noisy condition reaches an average of 2.8%.
