On the Interactive Effects of Objective and Subjective Age on Work Outcomes for Men and Women

Abstract Based upon theory on successful aging at work and the social identity of age, we hypothesized interactive effects of sex, objective chronological age, and subjective psychological/organizational age on age-based stereotype ratings of older workers, psychological well-being including both burnout and self-esteem, and behavioral self-reports of perceived unfair age and sex discrimination. Study hypotheses were tested using a survey-based sample of N = 1,583 workers from 3 countries, including Turkey, the United States, and Malaysia, and who were employed across a variety of occupations. Potential confounds resultant of socioeconomic status (education level), and the macro environment (country) were statistically controlled. Results generally found support for theoretically expected relations between age and work outcomes. Both psychological and organizational age interacted with chronological age such that different patterns of outcomes were found for men and women. Overall, although older subjective age benefited chronologically older workers, these interactive associations were less beneficial for older women as compared to older men. Implications of study findings for theory and practice are discussed.

Subjective age (how old or young individuals feel relative to their chronological age) is gaining popularity in gerontology and related disciplines because of its relation with biopsychosocial processes of aging. Evidence from Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) and other cohorts is reviewed on the predictors and outcomes of subjective age. An older subjective age is predicted by age discrimination, negative changes in one’s social and family networks, lower well-being and perceived control, poor physical conditions and more chronic health problems. Subjective age is also predictive of a range of crucial outcomes. Indeed, feeling younger is related to better physical and mental health, cognition, more favorable personality changes, lower risk of incident hospitalization, and longevity. These findings suggest that the subjective experience of age is a biopsychosocial marker of aging with promise as a predictor of crucial age-related outcomes, beyond chronological age.

Abstract Work exposures to asthma triggers can cause or aggravate asthma, which affects twenty-five million Americans including many older workers, and retirees who want to work or need to do so for income. Asthma trigger exposures have particular risk for older workers. Older adults who develop asthma have poorer health outcomes than people who had childhood asthma, yet older workers with low incomes may have limited ability to leave a job despite health risks. We studied occupation-related asthma using the nationally representative Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) (1968-2015, n=13,957, 205,498 person-years). We compared asthma outcomes in occupations with likely asthma trigger exposures to those in occupations with limited exposures. Methods included: prevalence ratios; incidence risk ratios (log-binomial regression adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, atopy, current and past smoking, and survey design); attributable risk fractions; population attributable risks; and microsimulation. The adjusted prevalence ratio comparing high risk occupations to low was 4.1 (95% confidence interval, CI 3.5-4.8); adjusted risk ratio 2.6 (CI 1.8-3.9); attributable risk 16.7% (CI 8.5-23.6); population attributable risk 11.3% (CI 5.0-17.2). In microsimulations, 14.9% (CI 13.4-16.3) with low trigger exposures reported asthma during working life, compared with 23.9% (CI 22.3-26.0) with high exposures. Asthma triggers at work may cause or aggravate more than 10% of adult asthma, and increase asthma risk by 60%. Lung health contributes importantly to well-being, and the ability to work at older ages. Results highlight needs for policies and employer actions to reduce asthma trigger exposures, and for public education about lung health.

The roles chronological age and gender play in subjective time experience were explored in a sample of 294 adult men and women. Subjective time experience (STE: the difference between subjective age and chronological age) was found to vary widely among individuals, with some being “accurate” (SA = CA), and others either “retarded” (SA < CA) or “advanced” (SA > CA). Males were more retarded in STE than females at every point in the lifespan, and patterns of age differences in adulthood differed for the two sexes as well. The results suggest that chronological age may play a key role in transitions in STE, and that chronological age is more significant in the STE of women than in the STE of men.

Abstract Although less subjective age focused than other scholarly fields, organizational behavior (OB) faces a familiar challenge: comprehending an aging, increasingly age-diverse workforce, yet finding chronological age alone to be a limited predictor of key work outcomes (e.g., performance). A recent OB framework posits that going beyond chronological age necessitates disentangling distinct age-based constructs: perceived Generation (birth cohort), Age (life stage), Tenure (length of time with organization), and Experience (skill set accumulated over time; GATE). Although this framework originated as a means of enhancing predictions for a rapidly aging workforce, this commentary argues that GATE also provides a framework for understanding bases of subjective age itself, including an important distinction between more subjective elements (generation, life stage) versus more objective elements (tenure, experience). Future research on subjective age might well consider applying GATE elements in order to enhance a multidimensional understanding of subjective age underpinnings.

As the long history, right to the present day, of police and vigilante violence against black people has shown with great clarity, the racial chasm between black and white people in the United States lives on. A few black men and women have climbed into the 1 percent, and a sizable African-American middle class now exists. But by every measure of social well-being, black Americans fare much worse than their white counterparts. Just as for the economic, political, and social distance between capitalists and workers, so too is there a differential between black and white people, for these same interconnected components of daily life continue because of the way our system is structured.

Older men and women have been found to be more vulnerable to negative outcomes should they contract Covid19, particularly if they also have comorbid conditions such as type 2 diabetes. Cultural, racial, ethnic, and social class differences exist in vulnerability to Covid19 and in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. In the United States, for example, diabetes rates for minority and immigrant populations are higher than for non-Hispanic whites. During the a social health crisis, it is helpful to explore the ways that illness management and associated vulnerability influences the ways that minority elders attempt to maintain and promote their well-being. This paper presents a case study example of an older immigrant woman, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and her struggle to manage her illness during a pandemic. The risk of developing diabetes in the United States is 3 to 1 and risks increase with age (American Diabetes Association, 2020).  Almost 50 % of black women as well as Hispanic men and women will develop diabetes in their lifetime (CDC, 2019). Disparities such as these have their origin in intersecting risk factors such as health care and lifestyle factors such as tress, poverty, weight, diet, and exercise patterns. Being a member of an ethnic minority and being overweight are the two significant factors associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes. During the coronavirus epidemic, these same factors also increase the risk for infection and for greater complications, even death as a result of infection (Society for Women’s Health Research, 2020). This essay illustrates the increased vulnerability and challenges including loneliness facing older women with type 2 diabetes during pandemic isolation.

Population aging in the United States poses challenges to societal institutions while simultaneously creating opportunities to build a more resilient, successful, and cohesive society. Work organization and labor-force participation are central to both the opportunities and challenges posed by our aging society. We argue that expectations about old age have not sufficiently adapted to the reality of aging today. Our institutions need more adaptation in order to successfully face the consequences of demographic change. Although this adaptation needs to focus especially on work patterns among the “younger elderly,” our society has to change its general attitudes toward work organization and labor-force participation, which will have implications for education and health care. We also show that work's beneficial effects on well-being in older ages are often neglected, while the idea that older workers displace younger workers is a misconception emerging from the “lump-of-labor” fallacy. We conclude, therefore, that working at older ages can lead to better quality of life for older people and to a more productive and resilient society overall.

Abstract Subjective age is an important indicator of age identity and is associated with both psychological and physical well-being. Previous studies have revealed that older adults who feel younger than their chronological age show better health status, better life satisfaction, and less risk of mortality. Considerable evidence shows that stress contributes to feeling older than one’s chronological age. Given the fact that taking a caregiving role involves stress, it is expected that caregiving might accelerate subjective aging. This study examined the association between the stressor of caregiving and subjective age in mid and later life. Data were drawn from the Health and Retirement Study in 2014 and 2016. Participants aged 50 years and over (n=1,087) were identified according to adult-child caregiver status at across the two waves: those who provided care consecutively (long-term caregivers), those who became caregivers in 2016 (new caregivers), those who were no longer providing care in 2016 (recent caregivers), or those who did not report providing care in both 2014 and 2016 (non-caregivers). Linear regression analysis showed that new caregivers reported feeling older than their chronological age compared to non-caregivers. However, long-term or recent caregivers did not show significant differences in subjective age compared to non-caregivers. The finding is consistent with the stress process theory and adaptation hypothesis. Although the onset of caregiving stress may accelerate subjective aging, this deleterious effect may decrease over time due to family caregivers’ adaptability. Future research will examine the role of support, resilience and mastery in this pathway.

Feeling a sense of purpose in life appears to hold consistent benefits for positive aging and well-being. As such, it is important to consider the potential factors that promote or hinder the development of purposefulness over the lifespan. For instance, it remains unclear whether early life experiences, particularly adverse ones, may hold lasting influences on whether one feels purposeful into adulthood. The current study examined whether early life adversity predicted a diminished sense of purpose in adulthood using data from participants ( N = 3835) in the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study. Reports of early life adversity were associated with lower levels of purpose in adulthood, and chronological age failed to moderate this relationship.

Abstract Background Despite reports in the past few years that Americans are having less sex, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported in 2019 that sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases are at an all-time high in the United States. The CDC report included statistics on confirmed cases of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, but did not include data for Trichomonas vaginalis and Mycoplasma genitalium. Although Trichomonas vaginalis and Mycoplasma genitalium are generally recognized agents responsible for STI’s, there is limited prevalence data in the United States. Methods Herein we present STI prevalence and socio-demographic epidemiological data associated with patients enrolled in a multicenter STI study using the automated multiplex qualitative CE marked assay, Alinity m STI. The enrolled study population reflected a diverse number of participants with an approximately equal male to female ratio, prior STI history, single and married, education levels from primary to post-graduate, as well as different ethnicities. Results Participants in this study population who have previously been diagnosed with an STI had an overall Mycoplasma genitalium prevalence rate that was approximately double those who have not been previously diagnosed with an STI. Furthermore, the co-infection rate for Mycoplasma genitalium and Trichomonas vaginalis was as high as 2.5% for vaginal swab specimens with an overall Mycoplasma genitalium prevalence of 11.6%. The overall prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis in women was 12.3%. Neisseria gonorrhoeae had the lowest overall prevalence in men and women at 2.4%, and Chlamydia trachomatis at had an overall prevalence of 9.8%. Conclusion Mycoplasma genitalium infections are generally asymptomatic in both men and women that contributes to up to 35% of non-chlamydial non-gonococcal urethritis in men and linked to cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease in women. Left untreated or not accurately diagnosed, STIs can cause significant, serious long-term health consequences including sexual, reproductive, and psychological well-being that present an extensive challenge and burden to public health in the United States.
