This experimental study examines the role of oral and written repetition strategies in consolidating new vocabulary in the classroom context. The participants in this study were divided into three treatment groups: oral, written and oral+written. A pretest and three delayed post-tests given at one day, one week and six weeks intervals were utilised in the study. The short and long-term retention of 12 unknown words was investigated over one semester. The results revealed that all three types of repetition strategies were effective in retaining new vocabulary in the short-term. However, in the long-term, the oral+written group achieved superior results while the oral group was the least effective. The findings on the effectiveness of employing these strategies across two levels of vocabulary knowledge (meaning recall and form recall) are discussed. These findings demonstrate the importance of repetition strategies in vocabulary learning.

The present paper discusses children who have been the victims of sexual abuse in their own family. It focuses on the special role of pediatricians and medical staff in identifying such children and providing them with initial assistance by reporting the situation to the authorities. The first part of the paper surveys the short- and long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse, including the physical and emotional impact of sexual exploitation and severe neglect. This section discusses the symptoms shown by abused children, and how they express and deal with their trauma. It is extremely important for pediatricians to be sensitive to the possibility of patients being abused at home, as this is an area still largely regarded as a societal taboo. Also included in this section a discussion of the effects that are manifested when the victim has grown to adulthood, such as personality disorders. The second part of the paper deals with how pediatricians must act when they encounter such a situation in which they suspect sexual abuse in the family. They should strive to identify the problem and bring it to the attention of the authorities. Discovery of the problem is the most vital part of the path to the victim's recovery. The paper also discusses the aspect of treatment, advising doctors who encounter this problem on ways of dealing with it.

The effectiveness of cisplatin, a mainstay in treatment of many solid organ cancers, is hindered by dose-limiting nephrotoxicity. Cisplatin causes acute kidney injury (AKI) in 30% of patients. Patients who do not develop AKI by clinical standards during the course of treatment are still at risk for long-term decline in kidney function and the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The connection between AKI and CKD has become increasingly studied, with renal fibrosis being a hallmark of CKD development. To prevent both the short- and long-term effects of cisplatin, researchers must use models that reflect both types of pathology. Although a lot is known about cisplatin-induced AKI, very little is known about the mechanisms by which repeated low levels of cisplatin lead to fibrosis development. In this review, strategies used in various rodent models to prevent kidney injury, its progression to fibrosis, or both are examined to gain mechanistic insights and identify potential therapeutic targets for cisplatin-induced kidney pathologies. Reviewing the results from these models highlights the diverse and highly complex role of cell death, cell senescence, endoplasmic reticulum stress, autophagy, and immune cell activation in acute and chronic kidney injuries. Use of several models of kidney injury is needed for development of agents that will prevent all aspects of cisplatin-induced kidney injury.

Abstract Objective 1) Examine the short- and long-term effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)—conducted in a naturalistic treatment setting—on objective and subjective cognitive functioning. 2) Examine the long-term effects of naturalistic ECT on depressive symptoms. Method Participants (N = 108) were outpatients (aged 18-65) diagnosed with a Major Depressive Episode who received ECT at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, Ontario. Parameters of ECT varied clinically. Participants completed a cognitive and psychological test battery at baseline (n = 108), mid-treatment (n = 82), 2–6-weeks post-ECT (n = 52), 6-months post-ECT (n = 24), and 12-months post-ECT (n = 14) that included Repeatable Battery for Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), Squire Subjective Memory Questionnaire (SSMQ), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS-2). Results Overall cognitive performance (total RBANS scaled scores) did not improve from baseline to 2-6 weeks post-ECT (p = 0.156), significantly improved from baseline to 6-months post-ECT (t(22) = -2.34, p = .026, CI: = -8.93– -0.63), but were not maintained at 12-months post-ECT (p = 0.20). SSMQ scores significantly worsened from baseline to mid-ECT (t(75) = -5.04, p < .001, CI: -17.53– -7.60), but returned to baseline levels by 2–6-weeks post-ECT. Depressive symptoms (BDI-II) significantly improved by the 4th ECT session and gains were maintained across all timepoints (p < 0.004). WHODAS-2 scores significantly improved from baseline and were maintained across follow-up (t < 0.05). Conclusion ECT was effective at improving depressive symptoms in a naturalistic setting with diverse patient presentations. Preliminary findings show minimal, if any, gains in cognitive performance–although, functioning did not appear to worsen following ECT. RBANS may not be sufficiently sensitive. Developing recommendations for conducting and evaluating ECT in naturalistic settings marks an essential next step.

Abstract This article is an abridged version of a document presented by the author at the World Conference on Employment held in Geneva in 1976. The study deals successively with the role of transnational enterprises in the production (and marketing) of exports to other LDC's and developed countries, the composition of these exports as well as their short and long-term effects on economic development, government revenues, employment and income. Outlining difficulties with which the LDC's will be confronted in their promotion of the export sector, the author puts forward several policy areas where active negotiations between developed countries and LDC's could lead to substantial improvement.

After examination of the research carried out by other agencies, Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation (SHT) embarked on an initiative to adapt low tire pressure technologies to the province's needs and environment. The focus of the initiative was to explore several technical questions from SHT's perspective: (a) Can low tire pressures be used to increase truck weights from secondary to primary without increasing road maintenance costs on thin membrane surface roads? (b) What are the short- and long-term effects of tire heating under high-speed/high-deflection constant reduced pressure (CRP) operations in a Saskatchewan environment? (c) What effects do lower tire pressures have on vehicle stability at highway speeds? To date, significant opportunities have been noted on local hauls (less than 30 min loaded at highway speeds) for CRP operation and long primary highway hauls that begin or end in relatively short secondary highway sections that limit vehicle weight allowed for the whole trip for central tire inflation technology. The background and environment for the initiative and the investigations and demonstrations envisioned and undertaken are briefly outlined.
