The 20th century represents a crucial period in Brazil’s economic history, when an agrarian, rural-dominated society became an urban, industrialized country with a complex financial sector and a large service sector. This economic transformation fueled by coffee exports led to profound demographic and social changes as millions of European and Asian immigrants were integrated into Brazilian society, followed by a massive shift of native-born migrants from the northeast to the dynamic southeast of Brazil, particularly for the state of São Paulo, which became the richest, most industrialized, and most populous state of the nation. The second half of the 20th century saw the creation of a modern industrial sector and the modernization of national agriculture, which in the 21st century made Brazil one of the most important producers of grain and animal protein in the world.

Cultural imperialism aims at how dominant culture affects other cultures to gain control of certain cultures and create the view that their dominant culture is the center for all countries in the world, which will create uniformity around the world. Therefore, this study will discuss how Asian rappers are influenced by American hip hop culture and how they benefitted from their careers’ success. The theory used in this study is cultural imperialism by John Tomlinson to see the influence of cultural imperialism in American hip hop culture to Asian rappers. The method used in this study is qualitative research by Creswell. The result shows that America’s cultural imperialism influences Asian Rappers by adopting its culture, language, and style of American hip hop. However, its influence is not harmful since the Asian rappers use this to gain more recognition from people, especially in Western, and to be accepted in representing Asian immigrants in the United States.

Land subsidence from over pumping groundwater is a serious problem affecting many parts of the world. This chapter begins with Joseph Poland, the pioneer of land subsidence investigations. The chapter then discusses how drought combined with a lack of groundwater management led to renewed land subsidence in California’s Central Valley. Mexico City, which has one of the most serious urban land subsidence problems in the world, is also discussed. The chapter then moves to success stories in bringing subsidence under control, such as California’s Santa Clara Valley; Houston, Texas; and Bangkok, Thailand.

The author was raised in rural Southern France. His passion for geography was revealed very early listening to his grandfathers African adventures or exploring the gorgeous surrounding nature. After graduating (maîtrise) in geography from the University of Montpellier-lll, and before teaching briefly in High School, a year of study abroad (USA) changed his life as he started to explore a different culture than his own and ended up writing his Ph. D (University of Paris-Sorbonne) on the new Asian immigrants in North America, living and experiencing both the Far West (Vancouver) and the Far East (Hong Kong). Therefore, analyzing different ways of life and of thinking through complete immersion has became a real passion for him and, after having recently discovered South America, he is willing to keep on interacting with the Other to fully understand the world on a global and multicultural level.
