A theory of status and coordination in organizations

Abstract Firms can motivate workers by offering them social status. Much of the literature argues that a rise in status is a powerful work incentive while ignoring its impact on coordination. This article shows that when workers need to collaborate while having individual vested interests, status differences may reduce the organization value by distorting efforts from different workers. However, status differences can increase the organization value when status effects changes in both authority allocation and cost of taking actions amongst workers. These results have practical implications for human resource management and promotion policies.

Purpose Bibliometric analysis allows examining a large volume of bibliometric data within an objective perspective. The purpose of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis to reveal the current status of human resource management (HRM) studies while exploring research trends and future directions. Design/methodology/approach Web of Science was chosen to identify studies in the field. In total, 1,404 articles were selected for bibliometric analysis. The VOSviewer program was used to analyze and visualize obtained data. Findings The findings revealed that the most frequently used keywords were job satisfaction, hospitality, tourism, HRM and work engagement. Karatepe and Baum were the most cited authors and Inoue (2011), Felps (2009), Shaw (2011), Gursoy (2008) and Cooper (2006) were the most cited documents in HRM studies in the hospitality and tourism domain. Research limitations/implications The study provides some theoretical and practical implications. The study findings can give researchers and practitioners insights into the current position of HRM studies and trend topics. Besides, it can be used as a practical guide for determining potential gaps in the literature. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature by bringing HRM studies in the hospitality and tourism fields together and revealing the current position of the inquiry by determining the most cited authors, articles, journals, organizations and collaborations among authors.

This research aims to determine how effective productive zakat is in alleviating poverty levels and targeting accuracy. Then to determine the effect of the empowerment of productive zakat on the recipient of productive zakat from the Bengkalis District National Amil Zakat Board. This research is quantitative and descriptive research. The results of this research found that the development of a business that has been carried out by 100 mustahik recipients of productive zakat has no effect on the social status of the recipient of zakat, this is due to the lack of intensive assistance and the limited knowledge and human resource management, as well as not being targeted in terms of distribution productive zakat. So that the effectiveness of productive zakat on the Bengkalis District National Amil Zakat Board does not significantly influence poverty alleviation.

An information system (IS) is “a set of people, procedures, and resources that collects, transforms, and disseminates information in an organization. A system that accepts data resources as input and processes them into information products as output” (O’Brien & Marakas, 2005). Likewise, the definition of human resource information Systems (henceforth HRIS) can be expressed as an IS that deals only with information related directly to the human resource management (HRM) area (Tannenbaum, 1990). Initially, computerized HRIS were only useful for administrative purposes. However, in the course of the last decade, that tendency has changed markedly and a strategic re-orientation of these applications is nowadays considered desirable and necessary for companies competing in today’s uncertain, complex and ever-developing environment. This phenomenon has turned HRIS into a major strategic means, capable of providing information about the actual capacity of the firm, its potential, and the potential of its competitors. This research paper aims to provide an in-depth analysis of HRIS usage as a tool for assisting in recruitment decisions. This was carried out in accordance with the empirical findings of a quantitative research on selection and recruitment processes in Spanish firms. This paper reports and evaluates the major results of this current study and discusses its theoretical and practical implications with a view to increasing the effectiveness of HRIS usage for its recruitment processes.

Telemedicine requires a new type of worker: the health care teleworker. Nevertheless, physicians remain wary of adopting telemedicine. This work examines the sources of the resistance to incorporating telemedicine. We adopt a focus centering on the difficulties that human factors have in accepting the practice of telemedicine. Employees’ resistance to change comes mainly from the inertia that perpetuates traditional routines and methods of working. The success of telemedicine projects will be determined by these human factors as well as by an adequate use of information technology and an appropriate organizational management. This work also offers some practical implications in human resource management for managers of telemedicine projects to consider.

Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the impact of pay on job satisfaction. Moreover, it studies the changes in the structure of the work force, as well as in the way work is done, on the pay to job satisfaction relationship. Design/methodology/approach – A confirmatory survey is conducted, and results are presented. Findings – The study suggests that gender is a variable affecting the relationship of pay to employees’ job satisfaction. It highlights the roles of education and training in user participation and system usage. The study investigates the current situation in Lebanese commercial banks. Research limitations/implications – The outcome of the study could have significant implications on managerial decision-making in the process of implementing novel technologies in banks. It also points to policy changes needed at the human resource management levels. Practical implications – The study findings suggest a needed change at the policy-making levels of corporate human resource management, as more and more employees are becoming extensive information system users on the job. Social implications – If the suggested practical implications are applied, the social implications derived therefrom will generate a social drift in attitude toward gender differentials. Originality/value – The paper is based on a large sample collection from the services sector, commercial banking in Lebanon. The quantitative survey results highlight a number of correlations and tests a suggested model. It puts forth a linear relationship between the different variables under consideration and suggests recommendations for practitioners.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to adopt a paradox lens for dovetailing the human resource management sub-domains of talent management (TM) and diversity management (DM), in the attempt to create closer alignment between the two. Design/methodology/approach The authors review paradox theory, TM and DM literatures and formulate a paradox that becomes apparent when considering TM and DM simultaneously. Findings The authors coin this tension as the “exclusion-inclusion paradox,” highlighting that TM and DM reflect contradictory, yet interrelated principles: organizations promote exclusion through a TM architecture that focuses on the identification and development of a few selected employees, while simultaneously, organizations promote inclusion, in the attempt to minimize existing inequalities for traditionally marginalized groups. Practical implications Once uncovered, the exclusion-inclusion paradox enables organizational actors to make choices on whether to respond actively or defensively to the paradox. The authors argue for active responses in order to work through the paradox. Originality/value This is the first paper adopting a paradox lens in order to interweave the DM literature with TM literature in the attempt to explain how DM and TM constitute contradicting yet interrelated principles.

In dit artikel wordt het begrip waardigheid (Engels: dignity) in HRM beschreven. Op basis van de vraag welke rol HRM in de huidige en toekomstige wereld kan spelen, wordt een nieuw paradigma afgezet tegenover het huidige dominante instrumentele paradigma in mainstream HRM onderzoek. Dit nieuwe paradigma is geformuleerd op basis van waardigheid. Dit artikel beschrijft het concept waardigheid en formuleert een theorie over 'waardigheid op het werk'. Vervolgens wordt de relatie tussen waardigheid en HRM geanalyseerd, en worden de meest relevante implicaties van een waardigheidsparadigma voor de kernvragen van HRM besproken. Daarnaast wordt aandacht besteed aan de theoretische onderbouwing van HRM-vraagstukken en de praktische implicaties voor onderzoek binnen HRM.This paper describes the concept of dignity in HRM. On the basis of the question which role HRM could play in the current and future workplace, two paradigms are discussed: the current dominant paradigm of instrumentality of the human being in HRM, and a new paradigm on the basis of dignity. The article describes what dignity is and formulates a new theory on dignity at work. Subsequently, the relationships between dignity and HRM are analysed, and the most relevant implications of a dignity paradigm for core questions within HRM, the theoretical underpinning of HRM, and practical implications for HRM are discussed.
