Abstract We present the results of the first complete unbaised survey of the Galactic plane for 6035-MHz excited-state hydroxyl (ex-OH) masers undertaken as part of the methanol multibeam (MMB) survey. These observations cover the Galactic longitude ranges 186° < l < 60° including the Galactic Centre. We report the detection of 127 ex-OH masers within the survey region, 47 being new sources. The positions of new detections were determined from interferometric observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We discuss the association of 6035-MHz masers in our survey with the 6668-MHz masers from the MMB Survey, finding 37 likely CH3OH–ex-OH maser pairs with physical separations of ≤0.03 pc and 55 pairings separated by ≤0.1 pc. Using these we calculate for the first time an ex-OH maser lifetime of between 3.3 × 103 and 8.3 × 103 yr. We also discuss the variability of the 6035-MHz masers and detection rates of counterpart 6030-MHz ex-OH masers (28 per cent of our sample having detection at both frequencies).

We present an X-ray survey of the Galactic Plane conducted by the Survey Science Centre of the XMM-Newton satellite. The survey contains more than 1300 X-ray detections at low and intermediate Galactic latitudes and covering 4 deg<sup>2</sup> well spread in Galactic longitude. From a multi-wavelength analysis, using optical spectra and helped by optical and infrared photometry we identify and classify about a fourth of the sources. The observed surface density of soft X-ray (&lt;2 keV) sources decreases with Galactic latitude and although compatible with model predictions at first glance, presents an excess of stars, likely due to giants in binary systems. In the hard band (&gt;2 keV) the surface density of sources presents an excess with respect to the expected extragalactic contribution. This excess highly concentrates towards the direction of the Galactic Centre and is compatible with previous results from Chandra observations around the Galactic Centre. The nature of these sources is still unknown.

We tabulate all 55 OH main-line masers discovered to date in the galactic plane between longitude 3� and 60�. For most of these we show current spectra, which have been taken with the Parkes 64 m radio telescope, in both senses of circular polarization on the 1665 MHz and/or 1667 MHz transitions; for some sources we give new position estimates, and several sources are reported for the first time. We discuss many sources individually and note that while most of the main-line OH masers probably pinpoint compact HII regions and sites of current star formation, a few appear to be unusual varieties occurring in circumstellar shells, possibly associated with late-type stars.

The galactic plane from longitude 340� through the galactic centre to longitude + 2� has been searched for OH on the 1665 MHz transition. Forty-nine OH maser emission sources were detected and these have now been studied on all four OH ground-state transitions. Most of the masers are associated with regions of star formation (type I) while three may be examples of late-type stars (type II OH/IR) with unusually strong main-line emission

Abstract This work makes available a further $2\,860~\text{deg}^2$ of the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey, covering half of the accessible galactic plane, across 20 frequency bands sampling 72–231 MHz, with resolution $4\,\text{arcmin}-2\,\text{arcmin}$ . Unlike previous GLEAM data releases, we used multi-scale CLEAN to better deconvolve large-scale galactic structure. For the galactic longitude ranges $345^\circ < l < 67^\circ$ , $180^\circ < l < 240^\circ$ , we provide a compact source catalogue of 22 037 components selected from a 60-MHz bandwidth image centred at 200 MHz, with RMS noise $\approx10-20\,\text{mJy}\,\text{beam}^{-1}$ and position accuracy better than 2 arcsec. The catalogue has a completeness of 50% at ${\approx}120\,\text{mJy}$ , and a reliability of 99.86%. It covers galactic latitudes $1^\circ\leq|b|\leq10^\circ$ towards the galactic centre and $|b|\leq10^\circ$ for other regions, and is available from Vizier; images covering $|b|\leq10^\circ$ for all longitudes are made available on the GLEAM Virtual Observatory (VO).server and SkyView.

ABSTRACT Arches and Quintuplet are two young, massive clusters projected near the Galactic Centre. To date, studies focused on understanding their origin have been based on proper motions (PMs) derived in the clusters’ reference frames and required some assumptions about their 3D motion. In this paper, we combine public PM catalogues of these clusters with the Gaia DR2 catalogue and, for the first time, transform the relative PMs of the Arches and Quintuplet clusters on to an absolute reference system. We find that the absolute PM of the Arches is (μαcos δ, μδ) = (−1.45 ± 0.23, −2.68 ± 0.14) mas yr−1 and that of the Quintuplet is (μαcos δ, μδ) = (−1.19 ± 0.09, −2.66 ± 0.18) mas yr−1. These values suggest that these systems are moving almost parallel to the Galactic plane. A measurement of the clusters’ distances is still required to meaningfully constrain the clusters’ orbits and shed light on the origin of the Arches and Quintuplet.

A review is given of information on the galactic-centre region obtained from recent observations of the 21-cm line from neutral hydrogen, the 18-cm group of OH lines, a hydrogen recombination line at 6 cm wavelength, and the continuum emission from ionized hydrogen.Both inward and outward motions are important in this region, in addition to rotation. Several types of observation indicate the presence of material in features inclined to the galactic plane. The relationship between the H and OH concentrations is not yet clear, but a rough picture of the central region can be proposed.

ABSTRACT The Methanol MultiBeam survey (MMB) provides the most complete sample of Galactic massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) hosting 6.7 GHz class II methanol masers. We characterize the properties of these maser sources using dust emission detected by the Herschel Infrared Galactic Plane Survey (Hi-GAL) to assess their evolutionary state. Associating 731 (73 per cent) of MMB sources with compact emission at four Hi-GAL wavelengths, we derive clump properties and define the requirements of an MYSO to host a 6.7 GHz maser. The median far-infrared (FIR) mass and luminosity are 630 M⊙ and 2500 L⊙ for sources on the near side of Galactic centre and 3200 M⊙ and 10000 L⊙ for more distant sources. The median luminosity-to-mass ratio is similar for both at ∼4.2 L⊙  M⊙−1. We identify an apparent minimum 70 μm luminosity required to sustain a methanol maser of a given luminosity (with $L_{70} \propto L_{6.7}\, ^{0.6}$). The maser host clumps have higher mass and higher FIR luminosities than the general Galactic population of protostellar MYSOs. Using principal component analysis, we find 896 protostellar clumps satisfy the requirements to host a methanol maser but lack a detection in the MMB. Finding a 70 μm flux density deficiency in these objects, we favour the scenario in which these objects are evolved beyond the age where a luminous 6.7 GHz maser can be sustained. Finally, segregation by association with secondary maser species identifies evolutionary differences within the population of 6.7GHz sources.

The Arches is one of the youngest, densest and most massive clusters in the Galaxy. As such it provides a unique insight into the lifecycle of the most massive stars known and the formation and survival of such stellar aggregates in the extreme conditions of the Galactic Centre. In a previous study we presented an initial stellar census for the Arches and in this work we expand upon this, providing new and revised classifications for ∼30% of the 105 spectroscopically identified cluster members as well as distinguishing potential massive runaways. The results of this survey emphasise the homogeneity and co-evality of the Arches and confirm the absence of H-free Wolf-Rayets of WC sub-type and predicted luminosities. The increased depth of our complete dataset also provides significantly better constraints on the main sequence population; with the identification of O9.5 V stars for the first time we now spectroscopically sample stars with initial masses ranging from ∼16 M⊙ to ≥120 M⊙. Indeed, following from our expanded stellar census we might expect ≳50 stars within the Arches to have been born with masses ≳60 M⊙, while all 105 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members are massive enough to leave relativistic remnants upon their demise. Moreover the well defined observational properties of the main sequence cohort will be critical to the construction of an extinction law appropriate for the Galactic Centre and consequently the quantitative analysis of the Arches population and subsequent determination of the cluster initial mass function.

The current ideas concerning the evolution of close binary systems (van den Heuvel, 1976), accepting the hypothesis that the system is not disrupted by the first supernova (SN) explosion, predict that the Wolf-Rayet phase can occur twice. The first time the companion of the WR star is a normal OB star and the second time it is a collapsed object. In this context, the importance of searching for binary systems with collapsed companions among the “single” WR stars is evident. Due to its large distance from the galactic plane, z = 280 pc (Smith, 1968a), when compared with the average height (z = 60 pc, Cruz-González et al., 1974) of extreme Population I stars, HD 50896 was considered to be a likely candidate to this type of system.

AbstractPrior to conducting a survey of the galactic plane at 327 MHz using the VLA, we have imaged four fields near galactic longitude of 20 degrees. Each image will cover a 2.5 degree field with ∼1 arcmin resolution. The fields have been chosen to include the remnants G20.0-0.2, G21.5-0.9, and G24.7+0.6. The first two are isolated Crab-like objects, that is, there is no discernible associated shell. Since such shells have relatively steep spectra, images at 327 MHz will be more sensitive to their presence. The absence of a shell can constrain the density of the ISM in the vicinity of the SNR (Reynolds and Aller 1985 A.J. 90, 2312). Since ∼50% of Crabs are naked, the implications can be extended to a significant fraction of the ISM.
