ABSTRACT In a gap between two concentric cylinders, we discover that the small heavy particle settling velocity (Vs) is greater than its associated terminal velocity (Vt) in featureless turbulence that is generated by counter-rotating inner and outer cylinders simultaneously. The peak enhancement of Vs occurs at St × (Vt/u′) ∼ 1, where u′ and St are, respectively, the r.m.s. turbulence fluctuation velocity and the Stokes number defined as the ratio between the particle response time to the Kolmogorov turbulence time. The present (Vs − Vt)/u′ data as a function of St measured by the high-speed particle imaging velocimetry are compared with previous experimental results obtained from different turbulent flow configurations in an attempt to gain further understandings of the complicated interactions between small heavy particles and featureless turbulence with negligible mean velocities. Moreover, it is found that small heavy particles are preferentially accumulated around the edges of an array of counter-rotating turbulent Taylor vortices with the inner cylinder rotation alone when a time ratio between particle response and Taylor vortices is near unity. These experimental results are interesting that may deserve to disseminate in our fluid mechanics community.

The average settling velocity in homogeneous turbulence of a small rigid spherical particle, subject to a Stokes drag force, has been shown to differ from that in still fluid owing to a bias from the particle inertia (Maxey 1987). Previous numerical results for particles in a random flow field, where the flow dynamics were not considered, showed an increase in the average settling velocity. Direct numerical simulations of the motion of heavy particles in isotropic homogeneous turbulence have been performed where the flow dynamics are included. These show that a significant increase in the average settling velocity can occur for particles with inertial response time and still-fluid terminal velocity comparable to the Kolmogorov scales of the turbulence. This increase may be as much as 50% of the terminal velocity, which is much larger than was previously found. The concentration field of the heavy particles, obtained from direct numerical simulations, shows the importance of the inertial bias with particles tending to collect in elongated sheets on the peripheries of local vortical structures. This is coupled then to a preferential sweeping of the particles in downward moving fluid. Again the importance of Kolmogorov scaling to these processes is demonstrated. Finally, some consideration is given to larger particles that are subject to a nonlinear drag force where it is found that the nonlinearity reduces the net increase in settling velocity.

Flow Induced Motions are always an important subject during both design and operational phases of an offshore platform life. These motions could significantly affect the performance of the platform, including its mooring and oil production systems. These kind of analyses are performed using basically two different approaches: experimental tests with reduced models and, more recently, with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) dynamic analysis. The main objective of this work is to present a new approach, based on an analytical methodology using static CFD analyses to estimate the response on yaw motions of a Tension Leg Wellhead Platform on one of the several types of motions that can be classified as flow-induced motions, known as galloping. The first step is to review the equations that govern the yaw motions of an ocean platform when subjected to currents from different angles of attack. The yaw moment coefficients will be obtained using CFD steady-state analysis, on which the yaw moments will be calculated for several angles of attack, placed around the central angle where the analysis is being carried out. Having the force coefficients plotted against the angle values, we can adjust a polynomial curve around each analysis point in order to evaluate the amplitude of the yaw motion using a limit cycle approach. Other properties of the system which are flow-dependent, such as damping and added mass, will also be estimated using CFD. The last part of this work consists in comparing the analytical results with experimental results obtained at the LOC/COPPE-UFRJ laboratory facilities.

The dynamic response of the turbine blade materials is indispensable for analysis of erosions of turbine blades as a result of impulsive loading associated with gas flow. This paper is concerned with the dynamic material properties of the Inconel 718 alloy which is widely used in the high speed turbine blade. The dynamic response at the corresponding level of the strain rate should be acquired with an adequate experimental technique and apparatus due to the inertia effect and the stress wave propagation. In this paper, the dynamic response of the Inconel 718 at the intermediate strain rate ranged from 1/s to 400/s is obtained from the high speed tensile test and that at the high strain rate above 1000/s is obtained from the split Hopkinson pressure bar test. The effects of the strain rate on the dynamic flow stress, the strain rate sensitivity and the failure elongation are evaluated with the experimental results. Experimental results from both the quasi-static and the high strain rate up to 3000/s are interpolated in order to construct the constitutive relation that should be applied to simulate the dynamic behavior of the turbine blade made of the Inconel 718.

Microplastic (MP) debris is recognized to be one of the most serious threats to marine environments. They are found in all seas and oceanic basins worldwide, even in the most remote areas. This is further proof that the transport of MPs is very efficient. In the present study, we focus our attention on MPs’ transport owing to the Stokes drift generated by sea waves. Recent studies have shown that the interaction between heavy particles and Stokes drift leads to unexpected phenomena mostly related to inertial effects. We perform a series of laboratory experiments with the aim to directly measure MPs’ trajectories under different wave conditions. The main objective is to quantify the inertial effect and, ultimately, suggest a new analytical formulation for the net settling velocity. The latter formula might be implemented in a larger scale transport model in order to account for inertial effects in a simplified approach.

Abstract Non-analyticity in co-moving momenta within the non-Gaussian bispectrum is a distinctive sign of on-shell particle production during inflation, presenting a unique opportunity for the “direct detection” of particles with masses as large as the inflationary Hubble scale (H). However, the strength of such non-analyticity ordinarily drops exponentially by a Boltzmann-like factor as masses exceed H. In this paper, we study an exception provided by a dimension-5 derivative coupling of the inflaton to heavy-particle currents, applying it specifically to the case of two real scalars. The operator has a “chemical potential” form, which harnesses the large kinetic energy scale of the inflaton, $$ {\overset{\cdot }{\phi}}_0^{1/2}\approx 60H $$ ϕ ⋅ 0 1 / 2 ≈ 60 H , to act as an efficient source of scalar particle production. Derivative couplings of inflaton ensure radiative stability of the slow-roll potential, which in turn maintains (approximate) scale-invariance of the inflationary correlations. We show that a signal not suffering Boltzmann suppression can be obtained in the bispectrum with strength fNL ∼ $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (0.01–10) for an extended range of scalar masses $$ \lesssim {\overset{\cdot }{\phi}}_0^{1/2} $$ ≲ ϕ ⋅ 0 1 / 2 , potentially as high as 1015 GeV, within the sensitivity of upcoming LSS and more futuristic 21-cm experiments. The mechanism does not invoke any particular fine-tuning of parameters or breakdown of perturbation-theoretic control. The leading contribution appears at tree-level, which makes the calculation analytically tractable and removes the loop-suppression as compared to earlier chemical potential studies of non-zero spins. The steady particle production allows us to infer the effective mass of the heavy particles and the chemical potential from the variation in bispectrum oscillations as a function of co-moving momenta. Our analysis sets the stage for generalization to heavy bosons with non-zero spin.

The frequency of turbulent macroinstability occurrence was measured in liquids agitated in a cylindrical baffled vessel. As it has been proved by preceding experimental results of the authors, the stochastic quantity with frequency of occurrence of 10-1 to 100 s-1 is concerned. By suitable choosing the viscosity of liquids and frequency of impeller revolutins, the region of Reynolds mixing numbers was covered from the pure laminar up to fully developed turbulent regime. In addition to the equipment making it possible to record automatically the macroinstability occurrence, also the visualization method and videorecording were employed. It enabled us to describe in more detail the form of entire flow field in the agitated system and its behaviour in connection with the macroinstability occurrence. It follows from the experiments made that under turbulent regime of flow of agitated liquids the frequency of turbulent macroinstability occurrence is the same as the frequency of the primary circulation of agitated liquid.

we demonstrate a wavelength interleaved DWDM Radio-over-Fiber (ROF) system for providing 1-Gb/s OFDM signal in downlink and 1-Gb/s OOK data in uplink simultaneously. In this scheme, we use only one arrayed waveguide grating device at the remote node to realize both the de-multiplexing and multiplexing functions. The experimental results demonstrate that this scheme is feasible to the future broadband high-speed OFDM-ROF access system.

We report on optical field measurements of snow settling in atmospheric turbulence at $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}=940$. It is found that the snowflakes exhibit hallmark features of inertial particles in turbulence. The snow motion is analysed in both Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks by large-scale particle imaging, while sonic anemometry is used to characterize the flow field. Additionally, the snowflake size and morphology are assessed by digital in-line holography. The low volume fraction and mass loading imply a one-way interaction with the turbulent air. Acceleration probability density functions show wide exponential tails consistent with laboratory and numerical studies of homogeneous isotropic turbulence. Invoking the assumption that the particle acceleration has a stronger dependence on the Stokes number than on the specific features of the turbulence (e.g. precise Reynolds number and large-scale anisotropy), we make inferences on the snowflakes’ aerodynamic response time. In particular, we observe that their acceleration distribution is consistent with that of particles of Stokes number in the range $St=0.1{-}0.4$ based on the Kolmogorov time scale. The still-air terminal velocities estimated for the resulting range of aerodynamic response times are significantly smaller than the measured snow particle fall speed. This is interpreted as a manifestation of settling enhancement by turbulence, which is observed here for the first time in a natural setting.
