Leafrollers are important pests of apples and infested fruit can result in rejection of export consignments Leafroller mating disruption using a pheromone blend with activity against three species was examined in 12 Hawkes Bay orchards over two seasons (200910 and 201011) Pheromone dispensers (600/ha) and a single insecticide were applied to trees in early November and subsequent insecticide use was based on leafroller pheromone trapping and thresholds The pheromone blend substantially suppressed mating of virgin female lightbrown apple moth in treated orchards and reduced male catch in pheromone traps by up to 98 compared with the season prior to implementation Insecticide use for leafroller control decreased accordingly from 2127 insecticides per block in 2008/09 to 1018 in 2010/11 Leafroller control using mating disruption was acceptable fruit damage varied from 03 to 016 and no leafroller larvae were found on fruit in both field assessments and phytosanitary inspections of packed cartons

The paper presents the results of the research on the correlation between changes in microclimate, the intensity of spruce decline and active abundance of its two economically most significant harmful insects-eight-toothed (Ips typographus) and six-toothed (Pityogenes chalcographus) spruce bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Golija Nature Park whose pure and mixed conifer stands are dominated by spruce. The route method and ocular inspection were applied to study the presence and determine the intensity of spruce decline-both of individual trees and groups of trees in the management units of Dajićke planine, Kolješnica, Golija and Brusničke šume. Population dynamics of the two species of bark beetles and their active abundance were monitored by the method of trapping with barrier traps and the use of combined pheromone dispensers-PCIT Ecolure. Although the decline of individual conifer trees, primarily of spruce, had already been present in certain areas of these management units for several decades, it reached epidemic proportions due to extreme adverse climatic conditions in the period between 2011 and 2012 and culminated in 2015. A large number of physiologically weakened trees raised the population levels of secondary harmful insects and the number or the active abundance of the two investigated species of insects reached a peak in 2016. The inability to take appropriate and timely remedial measures in the areas under stricter protection regimes greatly contributed to this situation.

Female flowers of some dioecious species are known to develop stamens with sterile pollen, a sexual system known as cryptic dioecy. A convincing hypothesis explaining this phenomenon is that stamens in female flowers attract pollinators and so ensure seed production. However, because this hypothesis has rarely been tested experimentally, we tested it in a cryptically dioecious species, Actinidia polygama (Sieb. et Zucc.) Planch. ex Maxim. Our findings show that pollinators do not show a consistent preference based on the sex of the flowers, and that the removal of stamens from female flowers results in a significant reduction in the frequency of insect visits and fruit production. These results strongly support the pollinator attraction hypothesis in A. polygama. Given the evident role of stamens in female flowers in A. polygama reproduction, we discuss why cryptic dioecy is a rare phenomenon.Key words: Actinidia polygama, cryptic dioecy, pseudopollen, pollinator attraction, unisexual flowers.
