This first survey in 2009 and 2010 on silica-scaled Chrysophytes in Zhenbao Island Wetland Preserve, Northeast China, recorded 32 taxa (5 in Chrysophyceae and 27 in Synurophyceae), of which 29 were previously found in other parts of China, three species, Spiniferomonas serrata, Mallomonas transsylvanica and Synura punctulosa are new records to China. In terms of biogeography, 1 taxon is endemic, 2 bipolar, 1 northern temperate, 9 cosmopolitan, and 18 of wide distribution. The endemism of Synura punctulosa, appears due to its poor dispersal ability; lack of sampling data may also contribute its known distribution range. Spiniferomonas serrata and Mallomonas transsylvanica, two bipolar taxa, are the first report in China. More research efforts are needed for adequately understanding the distributions of this group of algae.

ABSTRACT This is the first report of in vivo pneumococcal penicillin MIC drift from 4.0 to 16.0 mg/liter, possibly associated with alterations in the pbp1a gene. The case presented here is of an infant with early onset recurrent pneumonia and chronic bronchitis requiring repeated antibiotics.

Relatedness among mates affects reproductive performance in insects. Previous studies indicate that laboratory rearing of a closed population leads to a decline in fitness owing to inbreeding depression. Although females possess the ability to discriminate against unsuitable males, it is not clear whether they have the ability to bias paternity against related males. We investigated whether the zig-zag ladybird beetle (Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fabricius, 1781)) (Coleoptera Coccinellidae) has evolved mechanisms to avoid inbreeding. We performed mating disruption experiments among two lines of inbred and outbred individuals and assessed whether mating behaviour (including mating duration and mate guarding) and reproductive performance were affected. Results indicate that females delay the onset of copula when paired with inbred individuals. Decreased fecundity and percent egg viability following mating with inbred mate is indicative of cost of inbreeding. As trends of spermatophore transfer are similar in inbred and outbred pairs, we assume that females modify their reproductive performance when mated with inbred males. Thus, our study reveals that mating with relatives is likely avoided by females, thus preventing inbreeding depression.

The leaf-footed bug Leptoglossus zonatus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Coreidae) is an important pest in the Americas. However, no preference of colors, sexual behavior nor aggregation pheromone has been reported, which can be used for detection, monitoring, and control purposes. In the laboratory we tested the attractiveness of white, violet, blue, green, yellow, and orange color to nymphs and adults (mated and unmated) and found that most adults and nymphs were attracted to and remained longer on blue and green colored cards than the other colors tested. We found that couples may remain in copula ≈185 min and mate ≈20 times in a 60 d period with a similar number of matings during the scotophase and the photophase. Sexual behavior consists of six patterns: grooming, abdomen movement, antenna movement, antennation, mounting, and mating. In a Y-tube olfactometer, 80 and 62.5% of the adults tested were attracted to a hexane-extract of the volatiles released by 40 males and 40 females, respectively. This is the first report of the biological evidence of an aggregation pheromone in this bug.

We present a first report of necrotizing fasciitis of the abdominal wall in a 23-day-of-age, former 32-week-gestation premature infant. She was successfully treated with antibiotics without the need for initial debridement. After reviewing the etiology of necrotizing fasciitis, we discuss the unique aspects of this case, including the noninvasive approach to initial treatment, which we consider significantly contributed to her survival.
