AbstractThe effect of plant architecture, in terms of leaf hairiness, and prey spatial arrangement, on predation rate of eggs of the spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, by the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot was examined on cut stems of chrysanthemums. Three levels of leaf hairiness (trichome density) were obtained using two different chrysanthemum cultivars and two ages within one of the cultivars. The number of prey consumed by P. persimilis was inversely related to trichome density. At low prey densities (less than ten eggs per stem), prey consumption did not differ in a biologically meaningful way between treatments. The effect of prey spatial arrangement on the predation rate of P. persimilis was also examined. Predation rates were higher in prey patches on leaves adjacent to the release point of P. persimilis, but significantly greater numbers of prey were consumed in higher density prey patches compared to low density patches. The predators exhibited non-random searching behaviour, spending more time on leaves closest to the release point. The implications of these findings for biological control and predator–prey dynamics are discussed.

Life table of Tetranychus urticae and Phytoseiulus persimilis on bean leaflets were studied under laboratory conditions in three seasons. For T. urticae the development time from egg to adult varied from 7 to 24 days and the highest immature mortality was 78.70 % in winter. Eggs laid by females were 88.1 eggs in autumn and 70.6 eggs in summer season. The gross reproductive rate (GRR) was the highest (65.51) in autumn and 52.50 in summer. The net reproductive rate (Ro) was the highest (15.862) in autumn and 8.916 in summer. The intrinsic rates of increase (rm) and finite capacity for increase (λ) reached maximal values (0.1873 and 1.206) in autumn, whereas minimal values (0.056 and 1.058) were in winter season. The mean generation time (T) was the shortest in summer and double (3.701) days in autumn. The development time of P. persimilis from egg to adult varied from 5 to 14 days. The highest immature mortality was 60% in summer. Eggs laid by females were 39.4 eggs in autumn and 30.2 eggs in summer. The gross reproductive rate (GRR) was the highest (31.4) in autumn and 24.0 in summer. The net reproductive rate (Ro) was the highest (10.573) in autumn and 8.460 in winter. The intrinsic rates of increase (rm) and finite capacity for increase (λ) reached maximal values (0.1823 and 1.200) in summer, whereas minimal values (0.1025 and 1.108) were in winter. The mean generation time (T) was the shortest in summer. The results suggested that P. persimilis could develop and reproduce within a wide range of temperatures. The activity of the predacious mite Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and its prey, Tetranychus urticae (Koch), was studied at several humidity levels. The prey, but not the predator, continuously avoided high humidities. Both species were more active in low humidities than in high. Water available for drinking was important to the survival of P. persimilis.

Світова практика свідчить про наявність значного попиту на таких агентів біологічної боротьби як хижі кліщі. Їх широко використовують у тепличних господарствах для захисту овочевих та декоративних культур. При застосуванні в захищеному ґрунті в якості одного з найбільш ефективних засобів боротьби зі звичайним павутинним кліщем (Tetranychus urticae Koch, 1836) добре зарекомендував себе хижий кліщ фітосейулюс (Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, 1957). Автооорами розроблено спосіб розведення фітосейулюса. Технологічний цикл включає напрацювання природного корму фітосейулюса – звичайного павутинного кліща та безпосередньо хижака. Створено пристрій для вирощування хижого кліща фітосейулюса, що складається з двох боксів. В кожному боксі модуля для розведення фітосейулюса можливе автономне вирощування хижака. Кожен бокс розподілений перфорованими полицями на три однакових частини. Пристрій оснащений системою примусової вентиляції, що попереджає злипання та загнивання рослин, в яких мешкають кліщі. Принцип роботи модуля базується на негативному геотаксисі хижака. По мірі знищення павутинного кліща, субстрат переміщують на нижні полиці, а хижак мігрує в верхні відсіки де знаходяться свіжіші рослини з павутинним кліщем. Вивчено процес вирощування хижака в модулі для масового розведення фітосейулюса. Вирощування кліща здійснювали за температури повітря +26 – 28 °С та відносної вологості 70 – 80 %. Визначена динаміка збирання та кількість отриманого хижого кліща. Для збирання використовували ємності, які закріплені зверху боксів. Ємності для збирання міняли з інтервалом в 1,5 години. Найбільша кількість кліща зібрано на 6 годину збирання та складала в середньому 44,0 тис. з двох ємностей. Загальна кількість зібраного кліща за 12 годин складала 225,5 тис. Визначено, що в пристрої залишалися яйця фітосейулюса. В результаті, технологічні втрати складали 9 – 11 %. Тому після збирання здійснювали додаткове завантаження на верхню полицю зрізаних рослин з павутинним кліщем та через три доби здійснювали повторне збирання кліща. Використовуючи додаткове годування та збирання хижого кліща за цикл вирощування було отримано майже 242,2 тис. особин фітосейулюса у рухомих стадіях розвитку.

AbstractThe activity of the predacious mite Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot was greater oh a glass substrate than on a bean leaf substrate. Temperature did not affect its relative activity on the two substrates. The phytophagous mite Tetranychus urticae Koch was inactive on the bean leaf substrate. It was active on the glass substrate and its activity varied with temperature. The functional response of P. persimilis and T. urticae was examined at four temperatures (15°, 20°, 25°, 30 °C). Each functional response to increasing temperature rose curvilinearly to a plateau. From Holling’s disk equation, rate of successful search increased and handling time decreased.
