Scat samples were collected regularly at several breeding colonies of Cape fur seals along the Namibian coast. Merluccius capensis otoliths were obtained from these samples, identified, and measured. Cohorts were easily distinguishable using otolith length measurements converted to fish total length. Growth rates of 2- to 21-month-old hake and hatch dates for each of 15 cohorts were estimated from September 1994 to October 2009 (1994–2008 cohorts) using a Schnute growth function and a non-linear mixed-effects model. The function describing growth of these young hake was length Lt (cm) at age t (years) Lt = 3.17 + (25.0 − 3.17) × [1 − e−0.665 × (t − 0.140)]/[1 − e−0.665 × (1.74–0.140)]. Cohort-specific random effects showed a population hatch date estimate of 31 July (austral winter), varying by 94 days among cohorts, from 31 May (1996 cohort) to 1 September (2004 cohort). The mean growth rate from ages 6 to 12 months was 1.26 cm month−1 for the population, ranging between 0.97 cm month−1 (1996 cohort) and 1.38 cm month−1 (2004 cohort). As this rate is almost double the previously estimated value, which is currently used in the stock assessment models, this result may have major implications for the current stock assessment results and the management of the stock. Re-examination of growth rates needs to be extended to older fish.

Abstract Bush encroachment affects ~45 million ha of Namibia and, without appropriate restoration measures, it negatively affects rangeland productivity and biodiversity. Thinning is a common method to counteract bush encroachment. The thinning strategy applied in north-central Namibia was assessed to examine how effective it has been in reducing bush encroachment. Trees/shrubs were selectively thinned manually, targeting all height classes, except individuals with stem diameters ≥18 cm. We investigated the effects on the vegetation and soil properties using surveys on three freehold farms (in 2016 and 2017) in bush-encroached and previously thinned habitats. Our results revealed significant differences in the mean total nitrogen (TN) content between the treatments; thinned areas had higher TN content which would be beneficial for fast-growing grasses. In the thinned plots, the occurrence probability of red umbrella thorn (Vachellia reficiens Warwa) was significantly reduced, indicating that it was the most harvested species; and umbrella thorn (Vachellia tortilis (Burch.) Brenan spp. heteracantha) was increased, indicating that it favoured reduced densities of dominant species. Natural regeneration was rapid; the tree/shrub abundance in the 0–1-m height class in the thinned area surpassed those in the non-thinned by 34 per cent, ~7.2 years since thinning. Thinning significantly reduced tree/shrub abundances of the 1–3- and >3-m height classes, which was still evident 7.2 years since thinning. Based upon the generalized linear mixed-effects model, tree/shrub counts between treatments may equalize in ~14 and 15 years for the 1–3- and >3-m height classes, respectively. Thinning was effective in reducing tree/shrub abundances and can be used to restore wildlife habitat on the Namibian farmland: however, post-thinning management is required to maintain an open savannah vegetation structure as the 0–1-m height class cohort will eventually grow into mature trees/shrubs.

The objectives of this study were to establish body mass at birth, postnatal growth rate, and the factors that influence these parameters for the Juan Fernández fur seal, Arctocephalus philippii. Females of this species have an unusual attendance pattern in which foraging trips and shore visits last, on average, 12.3 and 5.3 days, respectively. Pup mass was obtained from cohorts born during the reproductive seasons in 1988 through 1992. Birth masses of male and female pups were significantly different, averaging 6.1 and 5.5 kg, respectively (F = 13.2, P < 0.0003, n = 238). Birth masses also differed among cohorts, being lowest in 1992 and highest in 1990. During the first 2 months of life, male and female pups grew at the same rate (79 ± 61.5 g · day-1 (mean ± SD); F[1] = 0.03, P = 0.8562). Interannual differences in growth rate during the first month were significant (F[4] = 8.14, P < 0.0001), as was the interaction between month and year effects (F[2] = 6.81, P = 0.0012). Growth rates for the 1990 cohort were lower than those in all other years except 1992. Birth masses and postnatal growth rates of Juan Fernández fur seal pups are comparable to those of other otariid species.

ObjectiveTo measure the kinetic visual acuity (KVA) which is the ability to identify approaching objects and the functional visual acuity (FVA) which is continuous VA during 1 min under binocular and monocular condition (non-dominant eye shielding) for healthy subjects, and related ocular parameters to explore their correlation and implication in aspect of integrated visual function.MethodsThe mean age of the 28 participants was 38.6±8.9 years (range, 23–57 years; 6 women). A KVA metre (AS-4Fα) and FVA metre (AS-28) were used to measure KVA and FVA, respectively. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to explore correlations among the measured visual function and related parameters, including age, binocularity, best-corrected visual acuity, refraction and tear break-up time.ResultsThe results of binocular KVA were better than monocular KVA at all speeds. A strong correlation was found between monocular and binocular KVA. The results of binocular FVA were better than monocular FVA (p<0.001) and there was a correlation between monocular and binocular FVA (R=0.638, p<0.001), as well as the maintenance rate for FVA (R=0.228, p=0.003). A linear mixed-effects model revealed that binocularity for KVA prediction was significant at all speeds and FVA was also significant at 60 km/h (p<0.05).ConclusionThe current results suggest that both binocularity and FVA may contribute to KVA.Trial registration numberUMIN00032385

The female attendance behaviour of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) and subantarctic fur seals (A.tropicalis), which breed sympatrically on subantarctic Marion Island, was investigated. Over the same period after the breeding season, the mean duration of feeding trips to sea, and percentage of time spent at sea, did not differ significantly between lactating females of the two species. The difference in mean duration of shore visits was significant and the longer onshore attendance of A. tropicalis probably related to the lower demand by their pups which grow at a slower rate. The subpolar maternal adaptations of A. gazella were unchanged under the more temperate environment at Marion Island, and it remains to be established unequivocally whether conditions there are limiting to the species.

The rearing of two pups to weaning is a rare occurrence in pinnipeds and in many cases it remains unknown whether it is a result of twinning or fostering. This study followed two cases where female New Zealand fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri) raised two pups, at a colony in Kaikoura, New Zealand. Maternal attendance behaviour was observed, mass and condition of the pups were measured and genetic samples were collected to assess relatedness. In one case, the female gave birth to twins, while the other case was found to be fostering of a second pup. In both cases, the filial pups of each female exhibited significantly lower mass, condition and growth rates than the colony average. The twins’ mother reared both pups to weaning and did not appear to spend a different amount of time ashore compared with single-pup mothers. The current study confirms both fostering and twinning in New Zealand fur seals, with the potential for successfully raising the pups to weaning, despite their well developed recognition system and the energy costs involved.

Food availability is a key concern for the conservation of marine top predators, particularly during a time when they face a rapidly changing environment and continued pressure from commercial fishing activities. Northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) breeding on the Pribilof Islands in the eastern Bering Sea have experienced an unexplained population decline since the late-1990s. Dietary overlap with a large U.S. fishery for walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) in combination with changes in maternal foraging behavior and pup growth has led to the hypothesis that food limitation may be contributing to the population decline. We developed age- and sex-specific bioenergetic models to estimate fur seal energy intake from May–December in six target years, which were combined with diet data to quantify prey consumption. There was considerable sex- and age-specific variation in energy intake because of differences in body size, energetic costs, and behavior; net energy intake was lowest for juveniles (18.9 MJ sea-day–1, 1,409.4 MJ season–1) and highest for adult males (66.0 MJ sea-day–1, 7,651.7 MJ season–1). Population-level prey consumption ranged from 255,232 t (222,159 – 350,755 t, 95% CI) in 2006 to 500,039 t (453,720 – 555,205 t) in 1996, with pollock comprising between 41.4 and 76.5% of this biomass. Interannual variation in size-specific pollock consumption appeared largely driven by the availability of juvenile fish, with up to 81.6% of pollock biomass coming from mature pollock in years of poor age-1 recruitment. Relationships among metabolic rates, trip durations, pup growth rates, and energy intake of lactating females suggest the most feasible mechanism to increase pup growth rates is by increasing foraging efficiency through reductions in maternal foraging effort, which is unlikely to occur without increases in localized prey density. By quantifying year-specific fur seal consumption of pollock, our study provides a pathway to incorporate fur seals into multispecies pollock stock assessment models, which is critical for fur seal and fishery management given they were a significant source of mortality for both juvenile and mature pollock.

Nineteen adult male New Zealand fur seals, Arctocephalus forsteri, were marked and measured at the start of the breeding seasons in November 1992 and 1993 at Cape Gantheaume, Kangaroo Island in South Australia. The age of each seal was estimated from the number of cementum layers in a post-canine tooth. The males that were attempting to hold territories were 7–15 years old and the heaviest was 160 kg. The mass of males could be predicted accurately from linear measurements and several predictive equations enable estimation of mass in the field. The mean annual survival rate for adult male New Zealand fur seals was 76%, which is higher than that in other fur seal species, perhaps reflecting the expanding nature of the A. forsteri population in Australia.

Abstract Thalassemia is a group of genetically inherited hemoglobin (Hb) disorders characterized by reduced synthesis of the b-globin chain and a sub-sequent imbalance in the a/b-globin chain ratio that results in chronic hemolytic anemia. The severity of clinical phenotype is used to distinguish this heterogeneous disease in two main subtypes: Thalassemia Major (TM) and Thalassemia Intermedia (TI). Iron overload is mostly due to increased intestinal absorption because of chronic anemia. Transfusions, in contrast with what happens in TM, have a minor role in the development of iron overload. However, although 1-year data from the phase 2, prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial and 1-year extension results from the THALASSA study assessing the efficacy and safety of deferasirox in TI patients with iron overload have been reported, no data, during randomized trials, have been so far published on Deferiprone (DFP) treatment (Taher et al Blood 2012 and Ann Hematol 2013) Adult patients with TI were randomly assigned in permuted blocks of 10 with a ratio 1:1 to DFP at 75 mg/kg/day for 7 d/week divided into three oral daily doses (DFP-group) or DFO by sc infusion (8–10 h) at 50 mg/kg per day for 5 d/week (DFO-group). The study was designed to detect an improvement in decreasing mean serum ferritin levels in each of the treated-groups from the initiation of therapy to each year (from year 1 to year 5) with a significance level of 5% and 80% power. The planned number of subjects was between 40 and 100 (Rochon Biometrics 1991). The primary endpoint was the treatment efficacy evaluated as change from the baseline value in serum ferritin levels during the 5 years assessed using a linear mixed-effects model (LMM, Laird-Ware Biometrics 1982) where we assumed the patient effect (given by the intercept terms for each patient) as random effect, while the treatment effect (treat), the time effect (time), the treatment-by-time interaction effect (treat×time), and the total transfusions in ml (tot TX) as fixed effects. Secondary endpoints were safety and survival analysis at 5-years evaluated considering the number of advers events and Kaplan-Meir curves respectively. Overall 88 patients, observed at 12 SoSTE centers in Italy between January 2001 and May 2011, were randomized (47 DFP-group and 41 DFO-group). There were no differences observed at baseline between the two randomized groups in clinical and haematological findings. The regression coefficient of time suggested that there was a linear decrease over time in the mean serum ferritin levels in both treatment-groups even if the p-value was very close to the statistical significance (Coeff. -88.4, 95% CI (-182.4; 5.6), p-value =0.065). However, the mean serum ferritin levels did not seem to be significantly different between the two treatment-groups over time (Coeff. -77.4, 95% CI (-231.7; 77.1), p-value=0.326 ). The effect of total blood transfusion on serum ferritin levels was not statistically significant (Coeff. 0.06, 95% CI (-0.01; 0.1), p-value=0.100). The estimated profiles of serum ferritin levels in the two groups were represented in Figure I. Agranulocytosis was reported in 4 case of DFP versus no cases of DFO group, respectively (p-value=0.118). Neutropenia was statistically significant different between the two groups DFP (6 (12.5%) versus no cases in DFO , p-value=0.027). Kaplan-Meier survival probability curves for the two treatment groups are shown in Figure II, and the log-rank test did not show any statistically significant difference in the survival between the two groups (p-value=0.36). In conclusion, these findings suggest as DFP shows same effectiveness and survival probability versus DFO with controlled safety profile. Therefore, these results support the possibility of using this drug in TI patients in which DFO and Deferasiorx is contraindicated. The growth, maternal attendance and sucking behaviour of 11 New Zealand fur seal pups, Arctocephalus forsteri, on Maatsuyker Island, Tasmania, were studied during the first six months of lactation. Early growth rates (0–50 days) ranged from 78 to 138 g day-1 and were amongst the highest recorded for any fur seal. Male pups from Maatsuyker Island in 1993 grew at double the rate reported from Kangaroo Island in 1989 and 1990. Growth of pups was influenced by the attendance behaviour of mothers. Mothers that spent relatively long periods at sea had pups that grew more slowly. The proportion of time spent sucking by pups decreased during the attendance period of mothers. Distinct interannual variability was also determined for body masses of pups weighed in March in five successive years, 1990–94, with mean body mass differing by up to 20% between years.

BACKGROUND: We investigated preoperative cerebral (ScO2) and abdominal (StO2) regional oxygen saturations according to cardiac diagnosis in neonates with critical CHD, their time trends, and the clinical and biochemical parameters associated with them. METHODS: Thirty-seven neonates with a prenatal diagnosis of CHD were included. ScO2 and StO2 values were continuously evaluated using near-infrared spectroscopy. Measurements were obtained hourly before surgery. A linear mixed effects model was used to assess the effects of time and cardiac diagnosis on regional oxygenation and to explore the contributing factors. RESULTS: Regional oxygenation differed according to cardiac diagnosis (p < 0.001). ScO2 was lowest in the patients with severe atrioventricular valvar regurgitation (AVVR) (48.1 ± 8.0%). StO2 tended to be lower than ScO2, and both worsened gradually during the period between birth and surgery. There was also a significant interaction between cardiac diagnosis and time. The factors related to ScO2 were hemoglobin and arterial saturation, whereas no factor was associated with StO2. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative ScO2 and StO2 in critical CHD differed according to cardiac diagnosis. ScO2 in the patients with severe AVVR was very low, which may imply cerebral hypoxia. ScO2 gradually decreased, suggesting that the longer the time to surgery, the higher the risk of hypoxic brain injury.
