Abstract Background and Objectives Research has shown that dual sensory loss is a risk factor for depression in older adults. However, validated measures of depression for people with dual sensory loss are lacking. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the construct validity and reliability of the Major Depression Inventory for use among elderly persons with acquired dual sensory loss. Research Design and Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted in a national sample of people ≥50 years of age with functional acquired dual sensory loss. Of the invited participants, 302 (66%) returned the questionnaire and 207 complete cases were included for analysis. Rasch models and graphical log-linear Rasch models were used for item analysis. Lack of differential item functioning was tested relative to severity of vision and hearing impairment, mode of questionnaire completion, age, sex, comorbidity, instrumental activities of daily living, social position, and cohabitation status. Results The 10-item Major Depression Inventory did not fit the Rasch model. An 8-item version, excluding the items “feeling sad” and “sleep problems,” fit a graphical log-linear Rasch model. No evidence of differential item functioning was discovered, thus the 8-item Major Depression Inventory was measurement invariant across severity of impairments and mode of completing the questionnaire. The overall reliability was 0.81 and ranged from acceptable to good for all subgroups of participants, except males with severe hearing impairment and low functional status. Consequently, the 8-item version of the Major Depression Inventory was considered construct valid and reliable within the frame of reference. Discussion and Implications An 8-item version of the Major Depression Inventory can be used to screen for depressive symptoms in elderly persons with acquired dual sensory loss.

Abstract Background Pain is often measured by asking people to rate their pain intensity at its worst, on average, and at its least, for the last 7 days using numeric rating scales. The three ratings are summed to produce a composite measure. The validity and reliability of this composite measure has not been examined using modern psychometric methods in any population. We examined the validity and reliability of this pain intensity measure for use with professional musicians, university music and science students, and university staff, all of whom had reported experiencing musculoskeletal symptoms in the last 7 days. Methods Data were collected using a questionnaire survey. The validity and reliability of the composite pain measure were examined using Rasch analysis. Differential item functioning was examined for age, gender, student status, musician status, and socioeconomic status. Results While the data fit one of the Rasch models, after several response categories were collapsed, differential item functioning was present. There was no solution found that fit one of the Rasch models, without differential item functioning. Conclusions Despite the recommendation for the three number ratings scales for pain to be combined, using Rasch analysis showed that this was not a valid approach for our study population. Our findings highlight the importance of using Rasch analysis to examine the utility of measures. Key messages Rasch analysis is a useful method for investigating the validity and reliability of scales. Combining pain ratings cannot be assumed to produce a valid and reliable measure.

Abstract Aim To test the psychometric properties of the KIDSCREEN-10. Background It is important to assess mental health and well-being in children for an early detection of psychological problems or hidden morbidities. There is limited knowledge about the psychometric quality of the reduced version of the KIDSCREEN questionnaire with only 10 items. Methods Analysis of psychometric properties was done by fitting Rasch models and graphical loglinear Rasch models to data collected in a study on acculturation of primary school children and their teachers in 2017. Results The data did not fit a Rasch model but did fit a graphical loglinear Rasch model. There was local dependence for four item pairs and differential item functioning for gender and citizenship. Conclusions The KIDSCREEN-10 provides essentially valid measurements of health-related quality of life in children if local dependency and dif ferential item functioning are taken into account. Reliability and targeting were less than satisfactory, especially for certain subgroups but reliability was adequate for most groups.

Abstract Efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning in animal science are forestalled by the lack of psychometric scales validated in our disciplinary context. Researchers have used instruments validated outside of animal science reliably, but this approach has questionable validity. The objective of our research was to adapt and validate scales to measure the motivational variables individual interest (II) and situational interest (SI) in introductory animal sciences students. A total of 254 introductory course students in two consecutive semesters rated their interest in animal sciences on unidimensional II (8-item) and 3-factor SI (11-item) scales previously validated for psychology undergraduates. After adapting instruments with wording specific to animal sciences, we conducted a series of confirmatory factor analyses. First, we discovered and removed two problematic items from the unidimensional II scale, offered theory-based explanations for differential item functioning in animal sciences students, and validated a revised II scale (λ = 0.74 - 0.94, CFI = 0.995, RMSEA = 0.027). Next, we confirmed the validity and reliability of the SI scale and its three subscales (λ = 0.83 - 0.96, CFI = 0.979, RMSEA = 0.048). Finally, to explore the dimensionality of SI in our population, we fitted a bifactor model and computed ancillary indices. Results supported the reliability and empirical validity of the bifactor model as an alternative conceptualization of SI (CFI = 0.986, RMSEA = 0.044). and indicated that the SI scale is mostly unidimensional (ω H = 0.923). This suggests that total SI scores can be used as a composite measure but that subscale scores are substantially contaminated by the general SI factor and should not be interpreted as unique. We present the finalized scales, recommendations for their use in animal sciences classrooms, and suggestions for future research.

AbstractTo develop the Symptom Questionnaire for Visual Dysfunctions (SQVD) and to perform a psychometric analysis using Rasch method to obtain an instrument which allows to detect the presence and frequency of visual symptoms related to any visual dysfunction. A pilot version of 33 items was carried out on a sample of 125 patients from an optometric clinic. Rasch model (using Andrich Rating Scale Model) was applied to investigate the category probability curves and Andrich thresholds, infit and outfit mean square, local dependency using Yen’s Q3 statistic, Differential item functioning (DIF) for gender and presbyopia, person and item reliability, unidimensionality, targeting and ordinal to interval conversion table. Category probability curves suggested to collapse a response category. Rasch analysis reduced the questionnaire from 33 to 14 items. The final SQVD showed that 14 items fit to the model without local dependency and no significant DIF for gender and presbyopia. Person reliability was satisfactory (0.81). The first contrast of the residual was 1.908 eigenvalue, showing unidimensionality and targeting was − 1.59 logits. In general, the SQVD is a well-structured tool which shows that data adequately fit the Rasch model, with adequate psychometric properties, making it a reliable and valid instrument to measure visual symptoms.

Abstract Background A previous qualitative assessment of the psychosocial consequences of labelling hypertension describes the diagnosis of hypertension as a labelling event with potential unintended negative long-term psychosocial consequences (labelling effects). Until now, the benefits of diagnosing hypertension have been far more reported than the harms. To obtain the net result of the preventive interventions for cardiovascular disease, such as diagnosing and treating mild hypertension, assessing benefits and harms in the most comprehensive way possible is necessary, including the psychosocial consequences of labelling. When measuring psychosocial consequences of labelling hypertension, a questionnaire with high content validity and adequate psychometric properties is needed. Objectives The aim of this study was to describe the psychometric parameters of face and content-validated pool of items. Other objectives were also to screen the item pool by using Rasch model analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for identifying such items with sufficient fit to the hypothesised models. Methods We surveyed the pool of items as a draft questionnaire to Brazilians recruited via social networks, sending e-mails, WhatsApp® messages and posting on Facebook®. The inclusion criteria were to be older than 18 years old, to be healthy and to have only hypertension. We used Rasch model analysis to screen the item pool, discarding items that did not fit the hypothesised domain. We searched for local dependence and differential item functioning. We used CFA to confirm the derived measurement models and complementarily assessed reliability using Cronbach’s coefficient alpha. Results The validation sample consisted of 798 respondents. All 798 respondents completed Part I, whereas 285 (35.7%)—those with hypertension—completed Part II. A condition-specific questionnaire with high content validity and adequate psychometric properties was developed for people labelled with hypertension. This measure is called ‘Consequences of Labelling Hypertension Questionnaire’ and covers the psychosocial consequences of labelling hypertension in two parts, encompassing a total of 71 items in 15 subscales and 11 single items. Conclusion We developed a tool that can be used in future research involving hypertension, especially in scenarios of screening, prevention, population strategies and in intervention studies. Future use and testing of the questionnaire may still be required.

The emergence of Differential Item Functioning (DIF) indicates an external bias in an item. This study aims to identify items at scientific literacy skills with integrated science (SLiSIS) test that experience DIF based on gender. Moreover, it is analyzed the emergence of DIF, especially related to the test construct measured, and concluded on how far the validity of the SLiSIS test from the construct validity of consequential type. The study was conducted with a quantitative approach by using a survey or non-experimental methods. The samples of this study were the responses of the SLiSIS test taken from 310 eleventh-grade high school students in the science program from SMA 2 and SMA 3 Tegal. The DIF analysis technique used Wald Test with the Rasch model. From the findings, eight items contained DIF in a 95 % level of trust. In 99 % level of trust, three items contained DIF, items 1, 6, and 38 or 7%. The DIF is caused by differences in test-takers ability following the measured construct, so it is not a test bias. Thus, the emergence of DIF on SLiSIS test items does not threaten the construct validity of the consequential type.
