Edward Thomas and Hedges: England’s Going Out of Stile

Abstract Edward Thomas’s life and writing are marked by his attentiveness to rural England. With an overview of Thomas’ prose writings and then a set of close readings of his poetry, this essay describes how he presented hedges as an especially important part of the English countryside. Examining Thomas’s prose, the essay sets out how he saw hedges bringing natural life together into concentrated versions of landscapes, and how he argued that these concentrations could represent the English national identity. As the essay demonstrates, these ideas came into his poetry. His speakers see English field life as intricately interwoven. Some respond to the ongoing First World War by building on this intricacy. Their sense of being at home in England and belonging there is fuelled by treating hedges as portals to an eternal and a pre-industrial England. By considering the roles that hedges have in his poems, this essay shows how Thomas shaped them into a focal point for portraying speakers who have a connection to the national identity.

With the help of publications, legislation, memoranda and promotional material, this article shows how various actors in the Slovene-speaking area, during the First World War, addressed their mothers, and if also in their cases, the phenomenon of the "militarization of motherhood" was shown, which was typical of other European countries. In the context of the discourse "militarization of motherhood", it analyzes the ways of how female (national) identity was formed. It tries to answer the question of what (patriotic) duties were imposed to women as mothers, for example, if as a result of declining birth rates in that time, even we encountered pronatalistic initiatives, especially those that were advocating social and health protection of (illegitimate) mothers and children. It also analyzes the views on the educational work of mothers at the time when this was, due to the absence of fathers, irregular lessons and the difficult war situation, even more difficult. At the same time, it studies the representations of women as mourning mothers at the deaths of their sons-soldiers. In this context, it establishes that during the war, the motif of a mourning, but brave and proud mother was frequent also in the Slovene press. A separate chapter presents the views of female authors on the topic of motherhood.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight the contributions of women teachers to the war effort at home in Australia and New Zealand and in Egypt and Europe between 1914 and 1918. Design/methodology/approach Framed as a feminist transnational history, this research paper drew upon extensive primary and secondary source material in order to identify the women teachers. It provides comparative analyses using a thematic approach providing examples of women teachers war work at home and abroad. Findings Insights are offered into the opportunities provided by the First World War for channelling the abilities and leadership skills of women teachers at home and abroad. Canvassed also are the tensions for German heritage teachers; ideological differences concerning patriotism and pacifism and issues arising from government attitudes on both sides of the Tasman towards women’s war service. Originality/value This is likely the only research offering combined Australian–New Zealand analyses of women teacher’s war service, either in support at home in Australia and New Zealand or working as volunteers abroad. To date, the efforts of Australian and New Zealand women teachers have largely gone unrecognised.

Puccini reception lay at the heart of a crisis of national identity that gripped Italy between the turn of the century and the First World War. For Puccini's detractors his works were an emblem of decadence; for his supporters they provided a means for regeneration. In his vitriolic monograph, Giacomo Puccini e l'opera internazionale (1912), Fausto Torrefranca associated Puccini with dangerous ‘others’ – women, homosexuals and Jews – in order to instil fear about the ‘feminisation’ of Italian culture. The reception of his book shows that Torrefranca's ‘extreme’ views were widely shared.

Pastoral music was one of the most important methods by which composers engaged with the horrors of the First World War, both at home and abroad. This chapter is divided into three sections, each focusing on pairs of composers who experienced the war in different ways: those who were unable to serve but engaged with the conflict at the home front; those who died in combat, and whose musical legacies have taken markedly different forms; and veterans whose memories catalyzed a new and distinctively modern expression of the pastoral in the decade after the war.
