Dispersion Pattern of Giant Cicada (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) in a Brazilian Coffee Plantation

Abstract The giant cicada Quesada gigas (Olivier, 1790) (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) is a major pest of coffee plants in Brazil. To ensure the rational management and ecological equilibrium, information about the behavior, dispersion, and reproduction of giant cicada is fundamental. The present work was conducted in an area of 97 ha planted with Coffea arabica L. to investigate adult dispersion as well as mating and oviposition behaviors of Q. gigas. A sound trap was placed at a ‘release point’ used for the attraction, marking, and release of adults in the area. The recapture of insects was performed with the same sound trap positioned at 20 points distributed at 100, 250, 400, and 1,000 m from the release point. The highest recapture rates of Q. gigas were observed at 100 m from the release point, and the lowest recapture rates were observed at 1,000 m. The presence of Eucalyptus plants in the area apparently influenced dispersion, as high recapture rates were observed at the sites close to Eucalyptus plants. One copulation of Q. gigas lasted 41.6 ± 0.43 min, and the period of a single oviposition bout was 30.0 ± 0.20 min. Quesada gigas adult longevity in the field was estimated to be 49 d. Both males and females were observed performing multiple matings.

The transformation of coffee plantlets with the cry1ac gene of Bacillus thuringiensis was achieved by biolistic using either the whole pUBC plasmid or only the ubi-cry1ac-nos genetic cassette. The cry1ac gene was inserted into coffee plants in order to confer resistance to the leaf miner Leucoptera coffeella, an insect responsible for considerable losses in coffee crops. Bearing in mind that the genetic cassettes used for this study lack reporter genes and/or selection marker genes, the parameters for the transformation procedure by biolistic were previously standardised with a plasmid carrying the gus reporter gene. The presence of the cry1ac gene in young plantlet tissues was determined by PCR, Southern blot and reverse transcription-PCR. Our results show that the obtainment of viable coffee plantlets, transformed by bombardment with the cry1ac gene and without selection markers nor reporter genes, is feasible.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of irrigation levels on the root system of drip-irrigated coffee plants in western Bahia State (BA), Brazil. The experiment was carried out on Café do Rio Branco farm, located in Barreiras - BA, using adult plants (approximately 3.5 years old) of coffee variety Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144. The experiment was set up as a randomized block design with three treatments corresponding to the irrigation depths of 75, 100 and 150% as determined using Irriplus software. After the fourth harvest, the coffee root system was assessed to determine root length density (RLD) and root weight density (RWD) in different sampled layers. A greater concentration of roots (RLD and RWD) was observed in the surface layer (0-20 cm) and under the lateral line (at 30 and 70 cm from the orthotropic branch). Realizou-se o trabalho na fazenda Café do Rio Branco, localizada em Barreiras - BA em cafeeiros adultos, aproximadamente 3,5 anos de idade, da variedade Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144. O experimento ocorreu no delineamento em blocos casualizados, composto de 3 tratamentos, correspondentes à 75, 100 e 150% da lâmina de irrigação determinada pelo software Irriplus. Após a quarta safra, procedeu-se às avaliações do sistema radicular do cafeeiro, onde foi determinada a densidade de comprimento radicular - DCR e a densidade radicular – DR em diferentes camadas amostradas. Observou-se maior concentração de raízes, DCR e DR, na camada superficial (0-20 cm) e sob a linha lateral (30 e 70 cm de distância do ramo ortotrópico). We performed a nearest-neighbor analysis to determine the population dispersion pattern and the association between males and females in a Juniperus communis L. var. depressa Pursh population occupying a continental dune in subarctic Quebec, Canada. The overall dispersion pattern was contagious, and males (or females) were proportionately as likely to have a male as they were to have a female nearest neighbor. Crown size was positively related to nearest-neighbor distance for the male-male comparison only, suggesting a somewhat stronger intrasex competition between males. Nearest-neighbor distance increased with crown size (significantly related to age) suggesting a change in the intensity of aggregation with age possibly related to self-thinning. Higher mortality as a result of stronger male-male competition could explain the female-biased sex ratio and the absence of spatial segregation between sexes. The overall contagious dispersion pattern in the population may be related to the fact that most seed cones fall directly underneath the mother plant. Birds can eat the cones of J. communis and thus disperse seeds. However, these seeds are deposited in clumps, a process that may also explain contagion within the population.

Young coffee plants from cultivar Mundo Novo of Coffea arabica were grown without irrigation for 32 consecutive days, to evaluate the effect of leaf water potential on damage caused by low temperatures, under controlled conditions. A wide range of leaf water potentials were evaluated, from - 0.45MPa (wet soil) at the beginning of the experimental period, to - 4.8MPa (severe leaf wilting) at the end. Results showed that under moderate water stress, there was a higher frequency of undamaged plants and lower frequency of severely damaged plants. These results help explain part of the regional variability observed after a frost and stress the importance of new studies associating cold and drought tolerance in coffee.

Pruning coffee plants is intended to stimulate generative growth that increases productivity to reach optimal. Plant Growth Regulator (PGR) makes it possible to exploit the production potential of plants. Pruning management, combined with the PGR in coffee plants, is expected to improve flowering and berry growth. The research was conducted for 7 mo from October 2017 to April 2018 at Gunung Gede, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. A split–plot design with two treatment factors was used in this research. Pruning was placed as the main plot consisting of two levels, namely without (P0) and with pruning (P1). The PGR application was placed as a subplot, consisting of three dosages, namely without PGR (Z0), and concentrations of 0.3 mL L–1 (Z1) and 0.4 mL L–1 (Z2). The results showed, the pruning treatment significantly influenced microclimate, number of branches, B0, B1 and B2, number of berry sets, and berries. Pruning treatment had a very significant effect on microclimate, plant height, number of branches, number of coffee fruits, yields crops–1, and productivity. Interaction both significantly affected plant height and B0. The best dosage had not yet been found.

The current climate change has an impact on crop production, especially coffee plants. Rainfall is one of the climate elements that influences the process of crop cultivation, because of its role in the availability of water crops. Raindrops that fall on the vegetated land cover does not directly reach to ground, but will temporarily be accommodated by a canopy, stems and plant branch. Once those places saturated with water, the raindrops will drop to the soil surface through the canopy, stem flow and partially evaporated back into the atmosphere that called interception. The study aims to determine the effect of the shade of coffee plants on the interception, and stemflow of plant canopy. As well as knowing the relationship between rainfall with throughfall, stemflow, and interception. This research was conducted at smallholder coffee plantation in Sumbermanjing Wetan District on the use of gamal shade coffee grown, sengon shade coffee grown, and sun-grown coffee. The results showed that the value of canopy throughfall in the three land uses was not statistically significantly different, but there was a tendency for monoculture coffee plants which has a greater yield that is 66,38% of the total rainfall of 15,32 mm. The highest stemflow value is in the sengon shade coffee grown of 3,07% of the total rainfall of 15,32 mm. Interception in the gamal shade coffee grown is the highest compared to other land uses that results obtained are 36,92% of the total rainfall of 17,1 mm. Rainfall has a relationship with the value of stemflow, throughfall and interception. Based on the correlation analysis test the results were significantly correlated with strong relationship.

Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is a xylem-limited bacterium that is the causal agent of coffee leaf scorch (CLS) in Central America. The purpose of this research was to survey potential vectors of Xf in plantings of coffee, Coffea arabica L., in Puerto Rico. These surveys were conducted from June to November 2006 on four farms, located in the municipalities of Yauco, Juana Díaz and Adjuntas. Insects were collected at each site at 15-day intervals. The 7,423 individuals collected belonged to five families and 12 species. Cicadellidae was the primary family in both number of species and number of individuals. Indexes of dominance, abundance, frequency and constancy showed Agallia pulchra, Apogonalia imitatrix, Caribovia coffeacola and Hortensia similis to be the predominant species. Indexes also showed significant differences among locations, with higher diversity and equitability on Yauco farms, and higher dominance in Adjuntas. Of the four dominant species, Apogonalia imitatrix, C. coffeacola and H. similis are all xylem fluid feeders, and thus may be potential vectors of Xf. Apogonalia imitatrix represents the first report of the species for Puerto Rico.

Abstrak.  Komoditas kopi identik dengan kehidupan masyarakat Aceh Tengah, karena sebagian besar penduduk di wilayah dataran tinggi ini menggantungkan hidupnya dari komoditas kopi. Evaluasi kesesuaian lahan pada tanaman kopi Arabika organik sangat penting untuk mengoptimalkan produktivitas tanaman tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kelas kesesuaian lahan aktual di Kecamatan Pegasing dengan analisis lahan seluas 7.800,69 ha adalah sangat sesuai (S1) seluas 2.851,28 ha (36,55%), cukup sesuai (S2) 3.616,56 ha (46,36%) dan tidak sesuai (N) seluas 1.332,85 ha (18,72%) dengan faktor pembatas terberat ketersediaan air (wa) pada semua SPL, resistensi hara (nr) pada SPL 1, 3 dan 4 serta kemiringan lereng pada semua SPL.Evaluation of Land Suitability on Organic Arabica  Coffee Plants (Coffea arabica L.) Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Pegasing District Middle of Aceh RegencyAbstract. Coffee commodities are identical to the life of the people of Middle Aceh, because most of the population in this highland region depends on the commodity of coffee. Evaluation of land suitability in organic Arabica coffee plants is very important to optimize the productivity of these crops. The results showed the actual land suitability class in Pegasing District with an analysis of an area of 7,800.69 ha was very suitable (S1) covering an area of 2.851,28 ha (36,55%), quite suitable (S2) 3.616,56 ha (46,36%) and incompatible (N) covering an area of 1,332.85 ha (18.72%) with the heaviest limiting factor of water availability (wa) in all SPL, nutrient resistance (nr) in SPL 1, 3 and 4 and slope slope in all SPL.

Coccus viridis (Green) danifica plantas jovens e adultas de Coffea arabica Linnaeu. No entanto, nada se sabe sobre a magnitude dos danos causados por esta praga. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar as relações entre o ataque de C. viridis e as perdas causadas por este inseto a C. arabica. Este trabalho foi conduzido em casa de vegetação na Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Foram utilizadas sementes da linhagem IAC 15 da variedade “Catuaí vermelho” de café (C. arabica). Para a confecção dos tratamentos esta praga foi criada em casa de vegetação separada do experimento. Os tratamentos foram: plantas infestadas e não infestadas por adultos e ninfas da cochonilha verde. As plantas foram nutridas com solução nutritiva. Durante 110 dias foram avaliados: números de adultos e de ninfas de primeiro, segundo e terceiro ínstares, área foliar, diâmetro do caule, altura das plantas em todas repetições. No final do experimento avaliou-se o peso das raízes, caule, folhas e total. Os pesos das raízes, matéria seca total, área foliar e diâmetro do caule de plantas não atacadas por C. viridis superaram em 1,31; 1,41; 1,50 e 8,93 vezes, respectivamente o peso de plantas atacadas. As variáveis selecionadas foram: diâmetro do caule (cm), área foliar (cm²), peso de raízes (g), ninfas, adultos e total das cochonilhas. Concluindo que a planta de C. arabica é afetada de forma diferente entre seus órgãos e que a ninfa de terceiro ínstar e adultos são as fases que mais causam danos a C. arabica. Losses Caused by Coccus viridis (Green) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) on Seedlings of Coffea arabica L. Abstract. Coccus viridis (Green) cause losses on seedling and old plants of Coffea arabica (Green). However, nothing is known about of the damages caused by this pest. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the relations between atack of C. viridis and the losses caused by this insect. on C. arabica. This work was conduced in greenhouse at Federal University of Viçosa. Seed coffee plants line IAC 15, variety “Catuaí vermelho” (C. arabica) were used. The insects were reared into greenhouse and separated of the experiment. The treatments were: infested plants and no infested by adults and nymphs of the green scale. The plants were nourished with compound nutrient solutions. For 110 days evaluated: numbers of adults and nymphs of instar first, second and third, leaf area, diameter of stem and plant height in all repetition. At the end of the experiment were evaluated weights of root, stem, leave and total. The weight of root, total dry matter, leaf area and diameter of the stem at plants no attacked by C. viridis were 1.31, 1.41, 1.50 and 8.93 times more than weight attacked plants, respectively. The main variables were: diameter of the stem (cm), leaf area (cm²), weights of root (g), nymphs, adults and all cochineals. Also, parts of the plant (C. arabica) were damaged by nymphs (third) and adults of C. viridis.
