In this study, the impacts of two different pear cultivars, “Conference” and “Alexander Lucas”, on the kinetics and the final quality of samples dried by convection (CD) and microwave-convection (MCD) methods, were investigated. The quality of dried material was evaluated by the analysis of water activity, porosity, color, acoustic emission (AE) and mechanical and sensory properties. The required drying time to obtain 0.2 kg H2O/kg dry solid (d.s.) was longer for “Conference” than “Alexander Lucas” and was 20 min by CD and 5 min by MCD. The pear cultivar, in conjunction with the drying method (CD or MCD), affected the number of AE events and the work of breaking. The CD pear of the “Conference” cultivar was characterized by higher force, higher breaking work and stronger AE relative to the CD pear of the “Alexander Lucas” cultivar. There were no differences in taste or overall quality, but the hardness was higher for the CD “Conference” pear. A principal component analysis showed that panelists preferred dried fruit with good taste and overall quality but lower hardness. A positive correlation was found between the number of acoustic events and sensory hardness; thus, an acoustic method can be useful for effectively evaluating the texture of dried pears. These results show that the dried pear slices that generated fewer AE events upon breaking were perceived as better by the panelists.

AbstractInfectious bursal disease (IBD) caused by non-enveloped double stranded RNA virus is an acute and contagious poultry disease. Outbreak of IBD could result in 10–75% mortality of the birds; hence it has gained socio-economic importance worldwide. Medicinal plants have shown broad spectrum anti-viral activities against RNA and DNA viruses. Moringa oleifera Lam (MOL), Phyllanthus emblicus Linn (PEL), Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn (GGL), and Eugenia jambolana Lam (EJL) are commonly available medicinal plants of the sub-continent and exhibited anti-viral potential against different viruses. Ethanolic extracts of the leaves of MOL and EJL, roots of GGL and dried fruit of PEL were investigated for their cytotoxic and anti-viral potential against IBD virus using MTT colorimetric assay and anti-viral assay. Significant anti-viral potential (P<0.001) was demonstrated at concentrations 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 µg ml−1 of GGL, PEL, MOL and EJL, respectively, with no cytotoxicity. Data also spotlighted that all tested plant extracts possess significant anti-viral potential and this trend was higher in GGL followed by PEL, MOL, and EJL. The data undoubtedly conclude that these medicinal plants contain several health beneficial phyto-chemicals which got significant anti-viral potential and effectively be utilized against IBD virus. Moreover, the outcomes of this study provide a platform on the way to discover novel anti-viral agents against IBD virus and other viruses from plant origin.

Introduction: Small bowel obstruction caused by bezoars is rare. One of the causes of phytobezoars is dried fruits. We present two cases of small bowel obstruction caused by dried apricots during Jewish holiday “Tu BiShvat”. Case Presentation: Two men, 54 and 86 years old hospitalized with acute abdomen attributed to small bowel obstruction. In the first case - intoxicated patient, due to suspicion of mesenteric ischemia underwent laparotomy. A lead point caused obstruction was found and after enterotomy whole dried apricot was removed. The patient swallowed it whole three days before hospitalization. In the second case, edentulous patient with small bowel obstruction and peritonitis underwent laparotomy. The cause of obstruction was a dried apricot swallowed whole by the patient. Discussion: Presentation of bezoar with features of acute surgical abdomen is extremely rare, accounting for only 1% of the patients. The expansion of phytobezoar that is high in cellulose content can absorb a large amount of fluid causing an obstruction of the small bowel. The treatment of small bowel obstruction caused by bezoars varies from dissolving with cellulase, papain and even Coca-Cola, followed by endoscopic and surgical removal. Conclusion: A high level of suspicion needs to exist in the presence of a history of eating dried fruit, which can cause gastrointestinal obstruction. Especially on background gastric bypass surgery and inadequate mastication.

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the in-vivo anti-hyperlipidemic activity of Capsicum frutescens extracts.Methods: The dried fruit powder were extracted with a three liquid phase extraction system. The acetone extract was isolated and the anti-hyperlipidemic activity was evaluated.Results: The anti-hyperlipidemic study was carried out by inducing hyperlipidemia in rats by means of triton. The serum collected was analyzed for total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein.Conclusion: The result of the present study revealed that the acetone extract of the fruits of Capsicum frutescens possess anti-hyperlipidemic activity.

Abstract Sulfur dioxide analysis by official (Monier-Williams) methods was compared with a new colorimetric procedure for dried fruits. Dried peaches, pears, apples and golden raisins were the test materials. The colorimetric method was found to be neither more nor less variable than two official methods except in analysis of dried pears, took less time and was easier to perform than the official methods, and yielded satisfactory recovery of sulfur dioxide.
