Enhanced Interactive Performance of Zoom-In/Out Gestures Using Electrostatic Tactile Feedback on Touchscreens

Abstract Tactile feedback added to touchscreens provides users with a high-quality interactive experience. The effect of tactile feedback on typical interaction gestures requires to be evaluated. With a custom-designed electrostatic tactile feedback device, we explore the effects of tactile feedback on zoom-in/out gestures and determine the issues satisfied by the relationship between completion time (CT) and index of difficulty (ID). Specifically, we compare the effect of electrostatic tactile feedback on the efficiency and accuracy of zoom-in/out gestures in three conditions, that is, no tactile feedback, linearly increasing tactile feedback force over operation process, and tactile feedback only in a target area. Then, we study the relationship between CT and ID with tactile feedback added to the target area. Results of experimental data from 12 participants show that tactile feedback added only to a target area can significantly increase operational efficiency and accuracy of zoom-in/out gestures. Furthermore, the relationship between CT and ID agrees well with Fitts’ law, and the correlation coefficient is larger than 0.9.

BACKGROUND: Scents may influence the perceived comfort of an environment. There are only a few studies conducted on the relationship between scent and comfort in aircraft cabin. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this research is to explore whether relationships between scents and perceived comfort can be found for passengers in an aircraft cabin. METHODS: 276 participants joined an experiment in a Boeing 737 fuselage. The participants were divided into nine groups and each joined a session for 60 minutes with the exposure to different scents. The effect of the odor was measured by a set of questionnaires at the beginning and at the end of the session. Results of questionnaires were analyzed regarding the effects on the completion time, of the type of scents, of the intensity of the scent and on gender. RESULTS: Significant differences were found at the beginning and at the end of the experiment regarding comfort and emotion, but sometimes no relations could be established. The influence of different scents on comfort/discomfort varied and changed over time. However, in all scenarios, participant’ scores on emotion decreased. Additionally, the added scents influenced the linearity between the changes in comfort and discomfort. CONCLUSIONS: Smell could influence the perceived comfort/discomfort of aircraft passengers over time, and different types of smells have different effects on passengers. The preferences on scents are diverse, which highlights the need for personalization in aircraft cabin design.

The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to examine differences in change of direction (COD) performance and asymmetries between team-sports while considering the effects of sex and sport; (2) to evaluate the relationship between linear speed, COD completion time, and COD deficit. A total of 115 (56 males, 59 females) athletes active in cricket, soccer, netball, and basketball performed the 505 for both left and right limbs and a 10-m sprint test. All team-sports displayed directional dominance (i.e., faster turning performance/shorter COD deficits towards a direction) (p ≤ 0.001, g = −0.62 to −0.96, −11.0% to −28.4%) with, male cricketers tending to demonstrate the greatest COD deficit asymmetries between directions compared to other team-sports (28.4 ± 26.5%, g = 0.19–0.85), while female netballers displayed the lowest asymmetries (11.0 ± 10.1%, g = 0.14–0.86). Differences in sprint and COD performance were observed between sexes and sports, with males demonstrating faster 10-m sprint times, and 505 times compared to females of the same sport. Male soccer and male cricketers displayed shorter COD deficits compared to females of the same sport; however, female court athletes demonstrated shorter COD deficits compared to male court athletes. Large significant associations (ρ = 0.631–0.643, p < 0.001) between 505 time and COD deficit were revealed, while trivial, non-significant associations (ρ ≤ −0.094, p ≥ 0.320) between COD deficit and 10-m sprint times were observed. In conclusion, male and female team-sport athletes display significant asymmetries and directional dominance during a high approach velocity 180° turning task. Coaches and practitioners are advised to apply the COD deficit for a more isolated measure of COD ability (i.e., not biased towards athletes with superior acceleration and linear speed) and perform COD speed assessments from both directions to establish directional dominance and create a COD symmetry profile.

The effect of smoking abstinence on performance of a reciprocal tapping task was investigated. 6 habitual smokers performed a single-plate and two versions of a two-plate tapping task. Fitts' Law was used to compute an index of difficulty (ID) in bits for the tasks which was 0 bits for the single-plate and 3.32 and 4.17 bits for the two-plate versions of the task. While smoking abstinence had no effect on performance of the single-plate tapping task, it increased movement time on performance of both two-plate task versions. These findings may provide a coherent explanation for the prior findings of nicotine deprivation on psychomotor performance in the literature. This explanation suggests that the effects of nicotine deprivation as incurred through smoking abstinence may be on the central mechanisms regulating information-processing rate for successful movement regulation. Thus nicotine deprivation may not affect performance of simple psychomotor tasks which require minimal information processing but will affect the performance of more complex tasks requiring significantly more information processing for successful movement regulation.

One hundred eighty-three students enrolled in an undergraduate psychology statistics course completed three tests comprised of different amounts of closed book and open book test items. For these tests, students also recorded their test completion time, for extra credit. We then combined course-based student data with preexisting demographic variables. We found that test completion time was sometimes negatively correlated with test performance, but not consistently so. Student age was positively correlated with test completion time, and prior term grade point average (GPA) and prior cumulative GPA were both positively correlated with test performance. We discuss these results by exploring possible reasons for the inconsistent relationship between test completion time and test performance, and the advice we might give to students regarding these matters.

Background: Local field potential (LFP) recordings helped to clarify the pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome (TS) and to define new strategies for deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment for refractory TS, based on the delivery of stimulation in accordance with changes in the electrical activity of the DBS target area. However, there is little evidence on the relationship between LFP pattern and DBS outcomes in TS.Objective: To investigate the relationship between LFP oscillations and DBS effects on tics and on obsessive compulsive behavior (OCB) comorbidities.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data and LFP recordings from 17 patients treated with DBS of the centromedian-parafascicular/ventralis oralis (CM-Pf/VO) complex, and followed for more several years after DBS in the treating center. In these patients, LFPs were recorded either in the acute setting (3–5 days after DBS electrode implant) or in the chronic setting (during impulse generator replacement surgery). LFP oscillations were correlated with the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) and the Yale–Brown Obsessive–Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) collected at baseline (before DBS surgery), 1 year after DBS, and at the last follow-up available.Results: We found that, at baseline, in the acute setting, the power of the oscillations included in the 5–15-Hz band, previously identified as TS biomarker, is correlated with the pathophysiology of tics, being significantly correlated with total YGTSS before DBS (Spearman's ρ = 0.701, p = 0.011). The power in the 5–15-Hz band was also correlated with the improvement in Y-BOCS after 1 year of DBS (Spearman's ρ = −0.587, p = 0.045), thus suggesting a relationship with the DBS effects on OCB comorbidities.Conclusions: Our observations confirm that the low-frequency (5–15-Hz) band is a significant biomarker of TS, being related to the severity of tics and, also to the long-term response on OCBs. This represents a step toward both the understanding of the mechanisms underlying DBS effects in TS and the development of adaptive DBS strategies.

The research uses a descriptive experimental methodology based on the study of the experiences of countries to benefit from them as an applied method of transition to the green economy in the project of a new city in Samawah. The use of analyzing developmental potentials method, the SWOT model and the spatial interaction of the reality of the situation Using modern GIS technologies have also been employed. The first section dealt with the conceptual framework of the green economy and its importance and comparison with the conventional economy, sustainable development, its goals and the obstacles it faces in attempting to understand the relationship between them and extract indicators, as well as shed light on the challenges facing the transition to a green economy and the achievement of sustainable development. Then, in the third section, the study shall be carried out in such a way as to develop the potential for the reality of the situation in the target area and to employ them to achieve the desired results a for the establishment of the proposed city in Samawah.
