In this paper, the analytical dynamics for singularity, switchability, and bifurcations of a 2-DOF friction-induced oscillator is investigated. The analytical conditions of the domain flow switchability at the boundaries and edges are developed from the theory of discontinuous dynamical systems, and the switchability conditions of boundary flows from domain and edge flows are presented. From the singularity and switchability of flow to the boundary, grazing, sliding and edge bifurcations are obtained. For a better understanding of the motion complexity of such a frictional oscillator, switching sets and mappings are introduced, and mapping structures for periodic motions are adopted. Using an eigenvalue analysis, the stability and bifurcation analysis of periodic motions in the friction-induced system is carried out. Analytical predictions and parameter maps of periodic motions are performed. Illustrations of periodic motions and the analytical conditions are completed. The analytical conditions and methodology can be applied to the multi-degrees-of-freedom frictional oscillators in the same fashion.

In this work we study a system of two van der Pol oscillators, x and y, coupled via a “bath” z: x¨−ε(1−x2)x˙+x=k(z−x)y¨−ε(1−y2)y˙+y=k(z−y)z˙=k(x−z)+k(y−z) We investigate the existence and stability of the in-phase and out-of-phase modes for parameters ε > 0 and k > 0. To this end we use Floquet theory and numerical integration. Surprisingly, our results show that the out-of-phase mode exists and is stable for a wider range of parameters than is the in-phase mode. This behavior is compared to that of two directly coupled van der Pol oscillators, and it is shown that the effect of the bath is to reduce the stability of the in-phase mode. We also investigate the occurrence of other periodic motions by using bifurcation theory and the AUTO bifurcation and continuation software package. Our motivation for studying this system comes from the presence of circadian rhythms in the chemistry of the eyes. We present a simplified model of a circadian oscillator which shows that it can be modeled as a van der Pol oscillator. Although there is no direct connection between the two eyes, they can influence each other by affecting the concentration of melatonin in the bloodstream, which is represented by the bath in our model.

Abstract The present study generalises previous research work on the dynamics of discrete oscillators with piecewise linear characteristics and investigates the response of a continuous model system with clearance and motion-limiting constraints. More specifically, in the first part of this work, an analysis is presented for determining exact periodic response of a periodically excited deformable rod, whose motion is constrained by a flexible obstacle. This methodology is based on the exact solution form obtained within response intervals where the system parameters remain constant and its behavior is governed by a linear equation of motion. The unknowns of the problem are subsequently determined by imposing an appropriate set of periodicity and matching conditions. The analytical part is complemented by a suitable method for determining the stability properties of the located periodic motions. In the second part of the study, the analysis is applied to several cases in order to investigate the effect of the system parameters on its dynamics. Special emphasis is placed on comparing these results with results obtained for similar but rigid rods. Finally, direct integration of the equation of motion in selected areas reveals the existence of motions, which are more complicated than the periodic motions determined analytically.

Abstract In this paper, periodic motions in an autonomous system with a discontinuous vector field are discussed. The periodic motions are obtained by constructing a set of algebraic equations based on motion mapping structures. The stability of periodic motions is investigated through eigenvalue analysis. The grazing bifurcations are presented by varying the spring stiffness. Once the grazing bifurcation occurs, periodic motions switches from the old motion to a new one. Numerical simulations are conducted for motion illustrations. The parameter study helps one understand autonomous discontinuous dynamical systems.

In this paper, period-1 motions varying with excitation frequency in a periodically forced, nonlinear spring pendulum system are predicted by a semi-analytic method. The harmonic frequency-amplitude for periodical motions are analyzed from the finite discrete Fourier series. The stability of the periodical solutions are shown on the bifurcation trees as well. From the analytical prediction, numerical illustrations of periodic motions are given, the comparison of numerical solution and analytical solution are given.

Abstract This paper investigates stable and unstable period-1 motions in a rotor system through the discrete mapping method. The discrete mapping of a nonlinear rotor system is for stable and unstable period-1 motions. The stability and bifurcation of periodic motions are determined. Numerical simulations of periodic motions are completed and phase trajectories, displacement orbits and velocity plane are illustrated. The period-1 motion near the internal resonance is determined with large vibration in the nonlinear rotor system.

In recent decades, nonlinear time-delay systems were often applied in controlling nonlinear systems, and the stability of such time-delay systems was very actively discussed. Recently, one was very interested in periodic motions in nonlinear time-delay systems. Especially, the semi-analytical solutions of periodic motions in time-delay systems are of great interest. From the semi-analytical solutions, the nonlinearity and complexity of periodic motions in the time-delay systems can be discussed. In this paper, time-delay effects on periodic motions of a periodically forced, damped, hardening, Duffing oscillator are analytically discussed through a semi-analytical method. The semi-analytical method is based on discretization of the differential equation of such a Duffing oscillator to obtain the corresponding implicit discrete mappings. Through such implicit mappings and mapping structures of periodic motions, period-1 motions varying with time-delay are discussed, and the corresponding stability and bifurcation analysis of periodic motions are carried out through eigenvalue analysis. Numerical results of periodic motions are illustrated to verify analytical predictions. The corresponding harmonic amplitude spectrums and harmonic phases are presented for a better understanding of periodic motions in such a nonlinear oscillator.

Quasi-periodic motions and their stability are addressed from the point of view of different harmonic balance-based approaches. Two numerical methods are used: a generalized multidimensional version of harmonic balance and a modification of a classical solution by harmonic balance. The application to the case of a nonlinear response of a Duffing oscillator under a bi-periodic excitation has allowed a comparison of computational costs and stability evaluation results. The solutions issued from both methods are close to one another and time marching tests showing a good agreement with the harmonic balance results confirm these nonlinear responses. Besides the overall adequacy verification, the observation comparisons would underline the fact that while the 2D approach features better performance in resolution cost, the stability computation turns out to be of more interest to be conducted by the modified 1D approach.
