Amaranth flour from germinated (GA) and non-germinated (A) seeds (0%-C, 5%, 15%, 25%) were mixed with wheat flour for breadmaking. Fermentation parameters of dough (time-tf, maximum volume-Vmax) were obtained. Specific volume (Vsp) of breads, crust color, texture and relaxation of crumb were analyzed. A high amount of germinated amaranth flour decreased Vmax and increased tf, obtaining breads with low Vsp and darkness crust. A firmed and chewy crumb, although with a more aerated structure (high area occupied by alveoli) was obtained. The GA25 bread presented the softer crumb. The elastic modulus-E1 of crumb increased and the relaxation time-T1 decreased with higher amounts of amaranth flour, suggesting the formation of a more structured crumb; mainly in the case of non-germinated amaranth flour. Wheat flour resisted the inclusion of 25% of germinated amaranth seeds (GA25) without substantial changes in bread quality.

AbstractVarious applications in numerical linear algebra and computer science are related to selecting the $$r\times r$$ r × r submatrix of maximum volume contained in a given matrix $$A\in \mathbb R^{n\times n}$$ A ∈ R n × n . We propose a new greedy algorithm of cost $$\mathcal O(n)$$ O ( n ) , for the case A symmetric positive semidefinite (SPSD) and we discuss its extension to related optimization problems such as the maximum ratio of volumes. In the second part of the paper we prove that any SPSD matrix admits a cross approximation built on a principal submatrix whose approximation error is bounded by $$(r+1)$$ ( r + 1 ) times the error of the best rank r approximation in the nuclear norm. In the spirit of recent work by Cortinovis and Kressner we derive some deterministic algorithms, which are capable to retrieve a quasi optimal cross approximation with cost $$\mathcal O(n^3)$$ O ( n 3 ) .

Abstract Background Autogenous bone augmentation is the gold standard for the treatment of extended bone defects prior to implantation. Bone augmentation from the zygomatic crest is a valuable option with several advantages, but the current literature for this treatment is scant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the increase in bone volume after locoregional bone augmentation using autogenous bone from the zygomatic alveolar crest as well as the complications and success rate. Results Analysis of the augmented bone volume in seven patients showed a maximum volume gain of 0.97 cm3. An average of 0.54 cm3 of autogenous bone (SD 0.24 cm3; median: 0.54 cm3) was augmented. Implantation following bone augmentation was possible in all cases. Complications occurred in three patients. Conclusion The zygomatic alveolar crest is a valuable donor site for autogenous alveolar onlay grafting in a locoregional area such as the maxillary front. Low donor site morbidity, good access, and its suitable convexity make it a beneficial choice for autogenous bone augmentation.

The elastic energy of a set of the twelve variants generated during the b ® a transformation of zirconium, with volume fractions fi, i=1..12, is derived with simplifying assumptions and the conditions on the fi to reach the energy minimum are established analytically. The minimum number of variants needed to reach this minimum is shown to be 6, and in this case, the variants have very specific volume fractions. Another result is that the maximum volume fraction of any variant is 1/3.

Abstract The usage efficiency of GNSS multisystem observation data can be greatly improved by applying rational satellite selection algorithms. Such algorithms can also improve the real-time reliability and accuracy of navigation. By combining the Sherman-Morrison formula and singular value decomposition (SVD), a smaller geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) value method with increasing number of visible satellites is proposed. Moreover, by combining this smaller GDOP value method with the maximum volume of tetrahedron method, a new rapid satellite selection algorithm based on the Sherman-Morrison formula for GNSS multisystems is proposed. The basic idea of the algorithm is as follows: first, the maximum volume of tetrahedron method is used to obtain four initial reference satellites; then, the visible satellites are co-selected by using the smaller GDOP value method to reduce the GDOP value and improve the accuracy of the overall algorithm. By setting a reasonable precise threshold, the satellite selection algorithm can be autonomously run without intervention. The experimental results based on measured data indicate that (1) the GDOP values in most epochs over the whole period obtained with the satellite selection algorithm based on the Sherman-Morrison formula are less than 2. Furthermore, compared with the optimal estimation results of the GDOP for all visible satellites, the results of this algorithm can meet the requirements of high-precision navigation and positioning when the corresponding number of selected satellites reaches 13. Moreover, as the number of selected satellites continues to increase, the calculation time increases, but the decrease in the GDOP value is not obvious. (2) The algorithm includes an adaptive function based on the end indicator of the satellite selection calculation and the reasonable threshold. When the reasonable precise threshold is set to 0.01, the selected number of satellites in most epochs is less than 13. Furthermore, when the number of selected satellites reaches 13, the GDOP value is less than 2, and the corresponding probability is 93.54%. These findings verify that the proposed satellite selection algorithm based on the Sherman-Morrison formula provides autonomous functionality and high-accuracy results.

A study was conducted on the packing and cohesive properties of chloroquine phosphate in binary mixtures with lactose and dicalcium phosphate powders. The maximum volume reduction due to packing as expressed by the Kawakita constant, a, and the angle of internal flow, θ, were the assessment parameters. The individual powders were characterized for their particle size and shape using an optical microscope. Binary mixtures of various proportions of chloroquine phosphate with lactose and dicalcium phosphate powders were prepared. The bulk and tapped densities, angles of repose and internal flow, as well as compressibility index of the materials were determined using appropriate parameters. The calculated and determined values of maximum volume reduction for the binary mixtures were found to differ significantly (P< 0.05), with the Kawakita plot being more reliable in determining the packing properties. Diluent type was found to influence the flow properties of the mixtures, with dicalcium phosphate giving predictable results while mixtures containing lactose were anomalous with respect to flow. The characterization of the packing and cohesive properties of the binary mixtures of chloroquine with lactose and dicalcium phosphate would be useful in the production of powders, tablets, capsules and other drug delivery systems containing these powders with desirable and predictable flow properties.

Bund shaping is one of the essential operations in preparing a paddy transplanting field. This operation is undertaken manually by spades in a traditional way as this has not been mechanised thus far. Therefore, this study was conducted to expose this operation by evaluating the economic, as well as physiological, cost involved in the bund shaping. For the economic cost, the study was conducted in nine different districts of Assam (India). The bund length for the estimated area was measured and estimated for one ha of land. The average rate of manual bund shaping was also measured to calculate the cost involved in this operation. Moreover, for the physiological cost, ten experienced subjects were calibrated and measured for their maximum aerobic capacity by sub-maximal exercise in laboratory condition. Furthermore, the heart rate was measured during the manual bund shaping and was then correlated with the calibrated data. It was found that the average required bund shaping length per ha was 3 669 m which was associated with a cost of 2 062.8 rupees. It was found that the bund shaping consumed 76.96% of the maximum volume of the oxygen consumption capacity of the subjects; however, the energy expenditure rate with respect to time and bund length were 7.37 kcal·min<sup>–1</sup> and 4.33 kcal·m<sup>–1</sup>, respectively. Hence, bund shaping in a paddy field comes under a severe workload category which emphasises the need of mechanisation for the bund shaping operation.
