Abstract Discarded rubber tires, a monumental solid waste problem, may provide the answer to another environmental problem - the removal of trace metals from wastewaters. Experiments indicated that used rubber tires will remove trace metals from aqueous solutions by reaction with the various constituents of the rubber tire. Aluminum, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc solutions were investigated and greater than 99.5% removal for most of the metals by treatment with discarded automotive tires was found.
