While music as an artistic form is well studied, the individuals behind the art receive relatively less attention. In this article, we provide evidence of celebrity advocacy with a systematic examination of musicians’ political engagement on Twitter. This study estimates the extent to which musicians use Twitter for political purposes, with particular attention to whether such engagement varies across music genres. Through a computational-assisted analysis of 2,286,434 tweets, we group 881 musicians into three categories of political engagement on Twitter: not engaged (comprising the majority of artists), circumstantial engagement, and active political engagement. We examine the latter categories in detail with two qualitative case studies. The findings indicate that musicians from different genres have distinct patterns of political engagement. The Christian music genre shows the most engagement as a whole, especially in philanthropy. On the contrary, the most active accounts are rock and hip-hop artists, some of whom discuss political issues and call for mobilization. We conclude with suggestions for future research.

The conclusion considers the value of the partnership between hip hop and diplomacy. Hip hop diplomacy has value in convening groups unlikely to collaborate otherwise; it can be a source of validation for hip hop artists and their communities; and it can generate a favorable view of the United States and good will towards its citizens. Such positive outcomes, however, are not automatic and require that programs be conducted with respect, humility, self-awareness and a willingness to collaborate with local partners. Although the State Department faced severe funding cuts in the first years of the Trump administration, hip hop diplomacy has remained well-funded, although its future is uncertain. Specific anecdotes and case studies come from Next Level programs in Bangladesh, El Salvador, and Morocco.

Posthuman Rap listens for the ways contemporary rap maps an existence outside the traditional boundaries of what it means to be human. Contemporary humanity is shaped in neoliberal terms, where being human means being viable in a capitalist marketplace that favors whiteness, masculinity, heterosexuality, and fixed gender identities. But musicians from Nicki Minaj to Future to Rae Sremmurd deploy queerness and sonic blackness as they imagine different ways of being human. Building on the work of Sylvia Wynter, Alexander Weheliye, Lester Spence, L.H. Stallings, and a broad swath of queer and critical race theory, Posthuman Rap turns an ear especially toward hip hop that is often read as apolitical in order to hear its posthuman possibilities, its construction of a humanity that is blacker, queerer, more feminine than the norm. While each chapter is written so that it can be sectioned off from the rest and read with a focus on the discrete argument contained in it, the chapters are not meant to be individual case studies. Rather, each builds on the previous one so that the book should best function if it is read in sequence, as a journey that lands us in a posthuman vestibule where we can party more freely and hear the music more clearly if we’ve traveled through the rest of the book to get there.

The Internet and the representation and dissemination of videos posted on YouTube has greatly impacted the evolution of screendance, especially as related to popular dance—dance broadly recognized as performed by the “populace” in codified forms such as hip hop, in fads like the Macarena, or styles unique to individuals. Such videos reflect how issues of social justice and equity are addressed in the new digital environment. This chapter discusses two case studies, Where the Hell is Matt? and The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers (LXD), which illuminate how YouTube has successfully provided a platform for exposure to certain marginalized citizens and movement forms like urban dance. But tensions exist and questions abound in relation to their innovative aesthetics, rhizomatic spread, and democratizing and social justice potentials. Can everyday users of YouTube foster a more egalitarian society, especially as capitalist for-profit forces and commercial impulses exert more pressures on the Internet? The response to these questions remains complex and incomplete.

This paper deals with multimodal metaphors as the basis of parodic integration in selected videos and album covers by rap artist Krešo Bengalka and his band Kiša metaka. The case studies of parodic integration are marked by a spectacle that significantly contributes to the blend. The study focuses on multimodal integration and disintegration and on the reversal of the conventional way of representing both the relation between the interior and exterior and the relation between the static and the dynamic.
