N-Acetylglutamate is present in foetal rat liver at 17 days' gestation. The tissue content (approx. 50 nmol/g wet wt.) remains constant during later foetal life. The appearance of N-acetylglutamate does not parallel the developmental pattern of the urea cycle.

The sulphogalactosylglycerolipid of rat brain is closely associated with the process of myelination, as demonstrated by the following observations. 1. The lipid is barely detectable in rat brain before 10 days of age, accumulates rapidly between age 10 and 25 days, and remains relatively constant in amount (between 0.3 and 0.4μmol per brain) thereafter into adult life. 2. The activity of adenosine 3′-phosphate 5′-sulphatophosphate–galactosyldiacylglycerol sulphotransferase is almost absent before 10 days of age, attains a maximum at age 20 days, and slowly decreases thereafter with increasing age. This developmental pattern correlates well with that of other myelin-specific metabolites. 3. Both the concentration of the sulphogalactosylglycerolipid and the activity of sulphotransferase are greatly decreased in the non-myelinating jimpy mouse. 4. The myelin fraction of rat brain contains most of the sulphogalactosylglycerolipid. The lipid occurs in a diacyl and an alkylacyl form. Determinations of the relative amount of each type in brain showed about a 1:1 mixture in both 21-day-old and adult rats. Rats injected with H235SO4 at 20 days of age lost35S from the diacyl form at a higher rate than from the alkylacyl compound over a 21-day period. These data suggest that the diacyl form has a higher turnover than the alkylacyl derivative. The percentage of the total sulpholipid content of brain contributed by the sulphogalactosylglycerolipid is 16% in 21-day-old rats and 8.4% in adult rats.

AbstractInterpretations by Claus and Gicsbrecht of the identity of the distal segments of the maxilla 2 and maxilliped in copepods are reviewed. The developmental pattern of setal additions to these appendages suggests that the distal segments of maxilla 2 are exopodal, while those of the maxilliped are endopodal; these data are consistent with the interpretation of Claus. Information about the genetic regulation of development of a fruitfly, and a reinterpretation of a fossil arthropod also support Claus. A general hypothesis identifies a compartment with a contralateral pair of uniramal limbs as the basic division of the body of an ancestral arthropod. Somites, crustacean biramal appendages, and insect uniramal appendages arc derived. The general hypothesis is used to explain the structure of a copepod including maxilla 2 and maxilliped.

ABSTRACTThis study explores the metalinguistic abilities of prelingually deaf children aged 4–7, who are users of Signed English, with regard to their explicit segmentation of Signed English sentences into words. Subjects exhibited varying metalinguistic abilities that generally increased with age and that were similar to the developmental pattern found in hearing populations. Based upon performance with respect to four factors (i.e., explicit segmentation, omissions of function words, content words, and inflectional morphemes), subjects were grouped into four classes. In Class 1, sentences or groups of words were not segmented. in Class 2, major constituents of the sentences were segmented. In Class 3, major constituents and some function words were segmented. In Class 4, the entire sentence was segmented. Patterns of omissions found throughout the classes for function words and inflectional morphemes are discussed. Also addressed are implicit segmentation skills found to develop prior to the development of explicit abilities.
