Civic education emerges as a new subject in the Spanish school after the last reform of the currículo. What kind of citizens and what kind of education are we talking about when we promote civic education? This paper reflects upon these topics and asks for the role of media education in the upbringsing of a critical, active, creative citizenship. A case of study joining media education and civic education is the «Student Voices project» developed in some American schools. La educación para la ciudadanía ha surgido como una nueva materia obligatoria en las enseñanzas no universitarias españolas tras la última reforma educativa. De cara a definir esta nueva asignatura es clave plantearnos de qué tipo de ciudadanía estamos hablando y qué tipo de educación es necesaria para su consecución. En este artículo planteamos el debate sobre estas cuestiones y reclamamos el papel que la educación en comunicación debe desempeñar en la formación de una ciudadanía crítica, activa y creativa. Como propuesta conjunta de vinculación de ambas materias se presenta el caso concreto del «Student Voices Project» desarrollado en escuelas estadounidenses.

We have selected articles to review from PS: Political Science & Politics that in some way inform civic education designed to promote civic knowledge, skills, and engagement. Our analysis provides a basic overview of these articles so that practitioners and scholars can quickly and easily reference the research and practices reflected in these articles and use these when designing their own course curriculum and assignments. A good many of these papers provide best practices or detailed descriptions of initiatives for easy replicability. This literature review has the modest intent to survey the works described herein in order to identify useful, actionable and broadly relevant research and practices that can easily be deployed to address the crises we currently face.

Scholars have long identified fostering democratic citizenship as a primary purpose of public schooling in the United States, as schools should intentionally prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed for active, informed democratic citizenship. In addition, global interconnectedness has reshaped needed civic competencies to participate in civic life. This conceptual article considers the intersections between civic and world history education, assessing the relationship between the two disciplines in order to create a framework of best practices in world history civic education. Global citizenship discourse is analyzed using this framework, considering how different forms may reinforce or undermine world history’s purpose of preparing students with pluralist understandings for global democratic living. Drawing on components of history education, world history, and global citizenship education scholarship, this article seeks to establish epistemological clarity as to how world history can contribute to meaningful civic education and vice versa.

ABSTRAK Lesson study  ini bertujuan untuk (1) meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran secara sistematis dan kolaboratif antara guru dan dosen; (2) membangun pengetahuan pedagogis antara guru dan dosen; (3) melakukan sosialisasi dan memperkuat kegiatan lesson study berbasis sekolah; (4) memberikan pelatihan kepada guru mata pelajaran PPKn di MTs Negeri Batu; (5) pelaksanaan kegiatan lesson study mata pelajaran PPKn; (6) mendeskripsikan pendapat-pendapat guru model, tim guru lesson study, tim pendamping lesson study terhadap pelaksanaan lesson study; (7) menyusun best practices pembelajaran mata pelajaran PPKn dengan kegiatan lesson study; dan (8) meningkatkan critical thinking peserta didik melalui model controversial public issues. Lesson Study yang digunakan menggunakan empat siklus yang masing-masing terdiri dari plan, do dan see. Berdasarkan lesson study yang dilakukan maka hasilnya yaitu: (1) terdapat peningkatan critical thinking siswa dari siklus 1 ke siklus 2 dan siklus 3 ke siklus 4; (2) proses pembelajaran yang terjadi menjadi semakin menarik, upaya peningkatan critical thinking menyebabkan guru dan dosen menjadi kreatif dan inovatif dalam memecahkan permasalahan pembelajaran yang terjadi dan (3) proses pembelajaran berjalan dengan baik dengan adanya plan, do dan see dalam setiap siklus. Kata Kunci: Critical Thinking, Pembelajaran PPKn, Controversial Public Issues ABSTRACT This lesson study aims to (1) improve the quality of learning systematically and collaboratively between teachers and lecturers; (2) building pedagogical knowledge between teachers and lecturers; (3) disseminating and strengthening school-based lesson study activities; (4) provide training to PPKn subject teachers at Batu Negeri MTs; (5) implementation of lesson study activities in PPKn subjects; (6) describe the opinions of the model teacher, the lesson study teacher team, the lesson study assistant team on the implementation of lesson study; (7) compile learning best practices for PPKn subjects with lesson study activities; and (8) increasing students' critical thinking through the controversial model of public issues. Lesson Study used uses four cycles, each of which consists of a plan, do and see. A Survey of Speech-Language Pathologists' Approaches to Assessing Social Communication Disorders in Children

Purpose The purpose of this article is to explore and describe the approaches and specific assessment tools that speech-language pathologists are currently using to assess social communication disorders (SCDs) in children, in relation to current best practices. Method Ninety-four speech-language pathologists completed an online survey asking them to identify which of the following approaches they use to assess children with SCD: parent/teacher report, naturalistic observation, formal assessment, language sample analysis, interviews, semistructured tasks, and peer/self-report. Participants were also asked to identify specific assessment tools they use within each approach. Results Participants most commonly assess SCDs by combining interviews, naturalistic observation, language sampling, parent/teacher report, and formal assessment. Semistructured tasks and peer/self-report tools were less frequently utilized. Several established parent/teacher report and formal assessment tools were commonly identified for assessing SCDs. Most participants use an informal approach for interviews, language sampling, and naturalistic observations in their SCD assessment process. Conclusions Generally, participants follow best practices for assessing SCDs by combining several different approaches. Some considerations for future assessment are identified, including the use of established protocols in the place of informal approaches in order to make the assessment of SCDs more systematic. Future directions for research are discussed.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, over 20% of Americans speak a language other than English in the home, with Spanish, Chinese, and French being the languages most commonly spoken, aside from English. However, few augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems offer multilingual support for individuals with limited functional speech. There has been much discussion in the AAC community about best practices in AAC system design and intervention strategies, but limited resources exist to help us provide robust, flexible systems for users who speak languages other than English. We must provide services that take into consideration the unique needs of culturally and linguistically diverse users of AAC and help them reach their full communication potential. This article outlines basic guidelines for best practices in AAC design and selection, and presents practical applications of these best practices to multilingual/multicultural clients.

People with ASD often need to access AAC in situations where a tabletop digital device is not practical. Recent advancements have made more powerful, portable, and affordable communication technologies available to these individuals. Proloquo2Go is a new portable augmentative and alternative communication system that runs on an iPhone or iPod touch and can be used to meet the diverse needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who are ambulatory and have difficulty using speech to meet their full daily communication needs. This article examines Proloquo2Go in light of the best practices in AAC for individuals with ASD such as symbols, visual supports, voice output, and inclusion.
