The work of Beat women poets and their contribution to the Beat canon was neglected for decades until the late nineties. This study presents a critical appreciation of early Beat women poets and writers’ impact on contemporary US literature drawing from theoretical tools provided by feminist literary and poetry criticism and gender studies on geography. The aim is to situate this female literary community, in specific the one of late 1950s and 1960s in New York, within the Beat generation and to analyze the characteristics of their cultural and literary phenomena, highlighting two of their most important contributions from the point of view of gender, cultural and literary studies: their negotiation of urban geographies and city space as bohemian women and writers, and their revision of Beat aesthetics through a feminist avant-garde poetics.

© 2016, © The Author(s) 2016. Cultural criminology emerged in the mid-nineties with defining texts written by Jock Young, Keith Hayward, and Jeff Ferrell, among others. Since its inception, it has been criticized for its shallow connections with feminist theory. While in theory cultural criminology clearly acknowledges the influence of feminist scholarship, it has in practice often only superficially ‘added’ on gender and sexuality to its scholarly investigations. Yet, as we argue, research identified with cultural criminology has much to gain from feminist theory. This article reviews a range of cultural criminological scholarship, particularly studies of subcultures, edgework, and terrorism. We investigate three themes significant for feminist research: masculinities and femininities, sexual attraction and sexualities, and intersectionality. Such themes, if better incorporated, would strengthen cultural criminology by increasing the explanatory power of resulting analyses. We conclude by advocating that feminist ideas be routinely integrated into cultural criminological research.

Hence, Sexing the Groove, edited by Sheila Whiteley, is a very welcome addition to this vital and growing area of popular music studies and cultural theory more generally. The collection reflects the reality that studies of gender and sexuality in popular music are born of a hybrid lineage; accordingly the book approaches its subject from a range of disciplines such as sociology, cultural theory, media studies, sychology and musicology, and as such is a vibrant mix. Despite its relative diversity, the book's structure and progression is fluent and focused.

This article introduces the work of Judith Butler, whose theory of gender performativity has become highly influential in contemporary studies of gender and sexuality. Her main thesis is that both gender and sex are produced by discourse. In order to deal with the discursive construction of bodies, it is necessary to move beyond the opposition between sex and gender long upheld in feminist theory. Butler's theory is intended as an improvement on constructionism. Understanding construction as involving the materialization of determinate types of bodies through the iteration of gender-constituting performatives, she argues that both sex and gender are co-original effects of this process. The function of performatives is to create heterosexually structured bodies and subjects, and these performatives operate by prescribing other identifications. Because there is never any easy fit between the stream of identifications and desires and the performativity of prescribtions and proscribtions, identities are always phantasmatic. The constitution of a heterosexually organized, gender differentiated identity rests on that which has been excluded and abjection figures as a critical resource on the struggle to rearticulate the terms of symbolic intelligibility and legitimacy in Butler's political vision.
