A not uncommon query, either casually or pointedly directed to an elementary or junior high school pupil by a concerned teacher, relates to the question as to whether or not the next day's arithmetic assignment has been done. Perhaps equally as common is the comment, frequently embellished with overtones which indicate a considerable sense of relief, “There, my arithmetic is done!” As desirable and important as the “doing” is to those involved, it is unfortunate that the “doing” represents only part of what should take place in terms of the arithmetic. Because of the traditional emphasis on the “doing,” important concepts, meanings, and understandings remain concealed and thus fail to contribute to the individual's developing ability to “do.”
