Kochaspids are an informal group of ptychopariid trilobites that were both abundant and widespread in the early Middle Cambrian of North America. Based on the reassociation of pygidia and cranidia of some kochaspids, Kochiella Poulsen, 1927, is redefined and Hadrocephalites n. gen. is proposed. Hadrocephalites includes taxa previously assigned by Rasetti and Palmer to Schistometopus Resser, 1938a. Schistometopus is considered nomen dubium. Representatives of Kochiella and Hadrocephalites from the Pioche Shale and Carrara Formation of Nevada are described, including the new species Kochiella rasettii, K. brevaspis, Hadrocephalites lyndonensis, and H. rhytidodes. Other kochaspids previously assigned to Kochaspis Resser, 1935; Eiffelaspis Chang, 1963; Schistometopus; and Kochiella are discussed and some are reassigned. The type specimens of Kochiella augusta (Walcott, 1886); K. crito (Walcott, 1917b); K. chares (Walcott, 1917a); K. mansfieldi Resser, 1939; K. arenosa Resser, 1939; Hadrocephalites carina (Walcott, 1917b), and H. cecinna (Walcott, 1917b) are re-illustrated.

The cassiduloid echinoid Calilampas californiensis n. gen. and sp. is described from middle lower Eocene (“Capay Stage”) shallow-marine sandstones in both the middle part of the Bateque Formation, Baja California Sur, Mexico, and the lower part of the Llajas Formation, southern California. The new genus is tentatively placed in family Pliolampadidae. The cassiduloid Cassidulus ellipticus Kew, 1920, previously known only from the “Capay Stage” in California, is also present in “Capay Stage” shallow-marine sandstones of the Bateque Formation.

The well-exposed and fossiliferous Permian carbonates in China have yielded Early and Late Permian species of the Sweetognathus complex that permit worldwide stratigraphic evaluation of members of the group. The sporadic appearance of species of Sweetognathus and related genera throughout the Permian in western North America and Iran, in particular, may represent iterative evolution and homeomorphy. The pectiniform element morphologies of the several species are interpreted as most important for evolutionary studies and document a partial Permian biostratigraphy in China that aids in the interpretation of less complete sequences elsewhere. A new genus, Pseudosweetognathus, and four new species, Pseudosweetognathus costatus, Sweetognathus subsymmetricus, S. paraguizhouensis, and Iranognathus nudus, are described.

AbstractAlastriagen. nov. is described, and Callierges tropicalis Schaus is transferred to the genus. Alastria chicosp. nov. is described from western North America and Alastria machosp. nov. is described from Costa Rica. We provide illustrations of the adults and genitalia of all three species, as well as the male genitalia of two related genera, Nedra Clarke and Actinotia Hübner.

The fixosessile, perireefal to reefal Devonian epibiont Davidsonia cemented itself by its entire ventral valve to the underside of alveolitid tabulate corals, or to stromatoporoid sponges. It occupied a cryptic niche in perireefal biostromal thickets to reef complexes in the Old World faunal realm (Europe, western North America), and Uralian–Central Asian faunal province. A new species, D. septata, is here reported in abundance for the first time from Middle Devonian (Givetian) rocks of Yunnan, thus extending its range to South China. The usual absence of the brachial valve is suggested to be due to postmortem taphonomy as a result of its unique, cemented mode of life on the undersides of corals or sponges. A new genus of coarsely ribbed, partly libero-, partly fixosessile davidsoniid, Rugodavidsonia, type Davidsonia woodwardiana (DeKoninck), mimicking unrelated Late Paleozoic orthotetids, is also described, demonstrating that ribs evolved secondarily in a family dominated from its inception by smooth shells. Its paleogeographic distribution ranged from Europe through western North America (and possibly China), commonly accompanying Davidsonia in similar assemblages, but with a slightly different mode of life. Reexamination of available material, using thin sections, peels and SEM, confirms that the impunctate shell structure, dorsally directed spiralia, nature of the hinge mechanism, the deltidial plates, absence of a chilidium, “atrypoid” musculature and vascular markings, show features in Davidsonia and Rugodavidsonia that are all typical of the Order Atrypida. Thus, Davidsonia demonstrates that ventral valve cementation evolved independently more than once in articulate brachiopods such as strophomenids, productids, atrypids, and thecideid spiriferids. A revised classification of the Davidsonioidea and Palaferelloidea is proposed. Relationships between various genera are outlined in a new family tree for these groups. The various families discussed, including the Symmatrypidae, are united under a new suborder, the Davidsoniidina, a primarily carbonate platform and perireefal dwelling group, which first evolved during the Ludlovian (Late Silurian) in the Uralian–Central Asian tropical shelf region, diversified over a period of ~47 Ma, and then died out during the late Givetian, 10 Ma prior to the Frasnian–Famenian mass extinction events.

AbstractThe Ceratozetidae of arctic western North America, represented by 12 species in 9 genera, are discussed. A new genus, Cyrtozetes, and species, Cyrtozetes denaliensis, are proposed, and Trichoribates copperminensis Hammer, T. polaris Hammer, Svalbardia paludicola Thor, Iugoribates gracilis Sellnick, Diapterobates notatus (Thorell) both adults and immatures, D. variabilis Hammer, Sphaerozetes arcticus Hammer, Fuscozetes sellnicki Hammer, Melanozetes longisetosus Hammer, and Ceratozetes spitsbergensis Thor and C. parvulus Sellnick are redescribed. Immatures of T. polaris, S. paludicola, F. sellnicki, and M. longisetosus are described. Distribution records of Ceratozetes gracilis (Michael) in the western North American arctic are listed. The new combination, Cyrtozetes shiranensis (Aoki and Fujikawa), is proposed.

AbstractThe western Nearctic genera Neothremma and Farula are assigned to the family Uenoidae, previously comprising only the type genus Uenoa from Asia; a new genus Sericostriata with S. surdickae n. sp. from western North America is also added to the family. Traditionally assigned to the Limnephilidae where they have been always anomalous, Neothremma and Farula are shown to share many synapomorphic larval characters with Uenoa; under close examination, characters of the adults support this relationship. Familial and generic diagnoses are provided, reflecting the revised composition of the Uenoidae. Generic keys to adults, larvae, and pupae are given; species are briefly reviewed and keys given to adults; Uenoa arcuata n. sp. is described from Assam, Uenoa janetscheki Botosaneanu is placed as a junior subjective synonym under U. hiberna Kimmins, and Neothremma laloukesi Schmid as a junior subjective synonym of N. alicia Dodds and Hisaw. Phylogenetic relationships among the genera are considered. This study is an instructive example of the importance of larvae in providing data for the systematics of Trichoptera.
