Major Progress

The use CCD detectors has allowed a major progress in abundance derivations for globular cluster stars in the last years. Abundances deduced from high dispersion spectra now correlates well with other abundance indicators. I discuss some problems concerning the derivation of accurate metal abundances for globular clusters using high dispersion spectra from both the old photographic and the most recent CCD data. The discrepant low abundances found by Cohen (1980), from photographic material for M71 giants, are found to be due to the use of too high microturbulences.

Abstract We perform a suite of hydrodynamic simulations to investigate how initial density profiles of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) affect their subsequent evolution. We find that the star formation duration and integrated star formation efficiency of the whole clouds are not sensitive to the choice of different profiles but are mainly controlled by the interplay between gravitational collapse and stellar feedback. Despite this similarity, GMCs with different profiles show dramatically different modes of star formation. For shallower profiles, GMCs first fragment into many self-gravitation cores and form sub-clusters that distributed throughout the entire clouds. These sub-clusters are later assembled ‘hierarchically’ to central clusters. In contrast, for steeper profiles, a massive cluster is quickly formed at the center of the cloud and then gradually grows its mass via gas accretion. Consequently, central clusters that emerged from clouds with shallower profiles are less massive and show less rotation than those with the steeper profiles. This is because 1) a significant fraction of mass and angular momentum in shallower profiles is stored in the orbital motion of the sub-clusters that are not able to merge into the central clusters 2) frequent hierarchical mergers in the shallower profiles lead to further losses of mass and angular momentum via violent relaxation and tidal disruption. Encouragingly, the degree of cluster rotations in steeper profiles is consistent with recent observations of young and intermediate-age clusters. We speculate that rotating globular clusters are likely formed via an ‘accretion’ mode from centrally-concentrated clouds in the early Universe.

A systematic near-infrared survey was made for globular clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. Two infrared stars were discovered in NGC419 (SMC) and NGC1783 (LMC). NGC419 and NGC1783 are well-studied rich globular clusters whose turn-off masses and ages are estimated MTO ~ 2.0 Mʘ and т ~1.2 Gyr for NGC419, and MT0 ~ 2.0 Mʘ and т ʘ 0.9 Gyr for NGC1783, respectively. The periods of the infrared light variations were determined to be 540 dfor NGC419IR1 and to be 480 d for NGC1783IR1, respectively. Comparison of the measurements with the period—if magnitude relation for carbon Miras in the LMC by Groenewegen and Whitelock(1996) revealed that the Kmagnitudes of the infrared stars were fainter by about 0.3 — 0.8 magnitude than those predicted by the P — K relation. This deviation can be explained if the infrared stars are surrounded by thick dust shells and are obscured even in the K band. The positions of NGC419IR1and NGC1783IR1 on the P — K diagram suggest that AGB stars with the main sequence masses of about 2 Mʘ start their heavy mass-loss when P ʘ 500 d.

The absolute magnitudes of δ Scuti stars derived from parallaxes measured by the Hipparcos satellite were compared with the previous estimates based on photometric uvby² indices, and significant differences were found which are related to photometric effects of metallicity and rotational velocity. A reliable calibration of Mv in terms of the photometric indices shall include an estimate of these effects. It is important also to take into account the possible presence of unresolved close companions in order to fully exploit the accuracy of Mv of nearby stars derived from the trigonometric parallaxes. The Mv of few bright SX Phe stars support the period-luminosity relation obtained with ground based observations of globular clusters, while it does not seem to confirm the empirical dependence of this relation on the metallicity. Some high amplitude δ Scuti stars with intermediate or normal metallicity and small and uncertain parallax have apparently a very low luminosity. Simulations of Mv determinations from observed parallaxes based on the discussion of observational errors by Lutz and Kelker (1973) have shown that the low luminosity could be an effect related to these errors.

ABSTRACT We have carried out a set of Monte Carlo simulations to study a number of fundamental aspects of the dynamical evolution of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters with different initial masses, fractions of second generation (2G) stars, and structural properties. Our simulations explore and elucidate: (1) the role of early and long-term dynamical processes and stellar escape in the evolution of the fraction of 2G stars and the link between the evolution of the fraction of 2G stars and various dynamical parameters; (2) the link between the fraction of 2G stars inside the cluster and in the population of escaping stars during a cluster’s dynamical evolution; (3) the dynamics of the spatial mixing of the first-generation (1G) and 2G stars and the details of the structural properties of the two populations as they evolve toward mixing; (4) the implications of the initial differences between the spatial distribution of 1G and 2G stars for the evolution of the anisotropy in the velocity distribution and the expected radial profile of the 1G and 2G anisotropy for clusters at different stages of their dynamical history; and (5) the variation of the degree of energy equipartition of the 1G and the 2G populations as a function of the distance from the cluster’s centre and the cluster’s evolutionary phase.
