AbstractThe status of halo studies using UV absorption lines is assessed. Sin absorption is essentially only seen from gas with z ≤ 1 kpc, and shows a modest flow toward the galactic disk. CIV shows diffuse absorption in general only from gas with z ≥ 1 kpc with predominantly negative velocities. Three exceptional cases of gas showing CIV absorption without absorption by neutral components are discussed. Outflowing gas has not been detected thusfar.


The ultraviolet absorption lines produced in interstellar clouds through the absorption of radiation from early type stars by molecular hydrogen H 2 may be analysed to yield the particle densities and ultraviolet fluxes in the absorbing regions and the absorption by HD may be analysed to determine the proton densities and the ionizing fluxes. The interpretation carries implications concerning the formation of other interstellar molecules, which may be the source of additional absorption lines.

AbstractGalaxies are born and grow within a cosmic ecosystem, in which they receive material from surrounding intergalactic gas via gravitationally-driven inflows and expel material via powerful galactic outflows. These processes, collectively referred to as the baryon cycle, are increasingly believed to govern galaxy growth over cosmic time. I discuss new insights on the baryon cycle using analytic models and hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy evolution, particularly emphasizing how galaxy outskirts are the prime locale within which to observe these processes in action by examining observational tracers such as rest-ultraviolet absorption lines and the neutral and molecular gas content of galaxies.

We demonstrate that lightly-doped Si ( P ) displays extremely sharp absorption lines – the narrowest yet reported for any impurity in natural Si . The Zeeman splitting of many of these lines in magnetic fields <10 T has been studied previously by a number of groups. In this paper we focus on the behavior of metastable states associated with conduction-band Landau levels. The use of a rather heavily doped sample and strong magnetic fields, up to 18 T, assists in the observation of these.
