Savage et al. (1977) found that the radio source PKS 1448-232 coincided with a stellar object of about magnitude 16.4 having an ultraviolet excess. A low resolution spectrum obtained with the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) confirmed this object as a QSO with zem = 2.22 and revealed many absorption lines short-ward of the La emission. Consequently this object was included in a programme of spectroscopy at intermediate resolution with the AAT to investigate QSO absorption lines. Savage et al. have given a finding chart with an optical position of 14h48m09s.3, −23°17′10″ (1950.0). The radio fluxes are 0.40 Jy at 2.7 GHz and 0.31 Jy at 5.0 GHz.

AbstractWe present a velocity of galactic outflows in star-forming galaxies at the highest redshift, z ∼ 6, so far studied with metal absorption lines. Absorption-line studies of galactic outflows need well-determined redshifts, but there are few strong emission lines in the observed-frame optical spectra of galaxies at high redshifts. In this work, we use the systemic redshifts determined by the ALMA [CII]158 μm emission lines. The sample consists of seven Lyman break galaxies at 5.1 < z < 5.7 whose Keck/DEIMOS and ALMA data are available in the archive. The outflow maximum velocity (νmax) is estimated by a fitting of line profiles to metal absorption lines in a composite spectrum. We find that νmax monotonically increases from z ∼ 0 to 6 and that νmax tightly correlates with the halo circular velocity estimated from the stellar mass.

OSO absorption spectra may offer a clue to the distribution of intervening matter clouds at z = 0 … 3. We tackle 1) the question of the occurrence of metal absorption lines of different ionisation levels in the same redshift systems by investigating the radiation transport through an inhomogeneous temperature profile; 2) the clustering properties of the lines of the Lyα forest by a correlation analysis of 9 published high-resolution QSO-spectra with the result of a certain contribution of metal absorption lines as well as marginally significant positive correlation regions ξ ≈ 0.3.
