AbstractWe present the detection of escaping Lyman Continuum (LyC) radiation from two local starburst galaxies, Tol 1247-232 and Tol 0440-381, using archival data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). From profile fitting of metal lines, high densities of neutral gas were derived for both galaxies, implying that the LyC radiation is escaping from holes in the interstellar medium. The first results for one of the galaxies, Tol 1247-232, give an escape fraction (fesc) of 17–35%. These new detections, together with that of the blue compact galaxy Haro 11 in Bergvall et al. (2006) where fesc between 4–10% was found, will have a feedback on cosmic reionization models.

The Relationship

In this paper we study the relationship between the star formation efficiency and luminosity of Hα emission, Lyman continuum radiation, and Hβ emission on 35 giant extragalactic HII regions in seven galaxies. Using the observational results we obtain the relationship, and find that the star formation efficiency is correlation with Halpha luminocity, and Lyman continuum luminosity, and Hβ lumonosity, respectively. Observations made with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) of the two bright stars ϵ CMa (B2 II) and β CMa (Bl II-III) are discussed. The photospheres show excess EUV radiation. The wind of ϵ CMa exhibits the Bowen Fluorescence mechanism, along with high ionization stages that help explain the nature of the wind shocks. The pulsation and beat phenomena exhibited by the variable star β CMa suggest that deposition of residual pulsation energy might heat and modify the structure of the atmospheres of early-type stars near the β Cephei strip. The possibility that many other B stars show a large excess Lyman continuum radiation is considered as a possible source of the ionization of the warm ionized medium (WIM) in the galactic ISM.
