Constant light power operation of an ultraviolet (UV) LED based on portable low-cost instrumentation and a monolithically integrated monitoring photodiode (MPD) has been reported for the first time. UV light irradiation has become one of the essential measures for disinfection and sterilization. Monitoring and maintaining a specified light power level is important to meet the criteria of sterilization. We built a module composed of a monolithically integrated UV LED and MPD, a transimpedance amplifier, an Arduino Uno card, a digital-to-analog converter and a Bluetooth transceiver. An Android App that we wrote remotely controlled the UV LED module via Bluetooth. The Arduino Uno card was programmed to receive demands from the smartphone, sent a driving voltage to the LED and returned the present MPD voltage to the smartphone. A feedback loop was used to adjust the LED voltage for maintaining a constant light output. We successfully demonstrated the functioning of remote control of the App, and the resultant UV LED measured power remained the same as the setting power. This setup can also be applied to visible or white LEDs for controlling/maintaining mixed light’s chromaticity coordinates or color temperature. With such controlling and internet capability, custom profiling and maintenance of precision lighting remotely would be possible.

AbstractLight, one of the key environmental components for both life and work, played significant role in subjective feelings (e.g. affect and comfort), but the exact effects and mechanisms were still to be determined. The present study screened thirty healthy adults (13 females, 22.45 ± 3.26 years) and examined subjective affect and comfort under short-term white lights with different combination of correlated color temperature (CCT) and illuminance at different times of day (e.g. morning, afternoon, and evening). Our results showed a significant interaction between illuminance level and time-of-day on subjective comfort. Participants felt more comfortable under 50 lx and 100 lx instead of 500 lx in the evening, and more comfortable under 500 lx in the morning and afternoon. In addition, a positive correlation between illuminance and comfort in the morning and a negative correlation between them in the evening were found. No significant effect of CCT on any subjective feeling was revealed. Our results necessitate the consideration of time-of-day in understanding lighting effects and application of healthy lighting in daily life.

White-light-emitting diodes (WLED) based on yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) phosphors sintered with glass (PiG) and with silicone (PiS) are compared in terms of their light properties, temperature properties and reliability.The complete YAG phosphor was doped with an encapsulant traditional WLED (PiS WLED), and the WLED was covered with PiG (PiG WLED). PiG was made by sintering glass powder and YAG phosphor at the ratio of 87:13 (%), and the correlated color temperature (CCT) was 5564 K. The CCT of the PiG WLED with the YAG doping concentration of 8.5 wt.% approximated 5649 K. The initial light output of the PiG WLED was 6.4% lower than that of the PiS WLED. Under 1008 h and 350 mA aging, PiG WLED and PiS WLED’ light output, CCT and color rendering index variation rates were all within 1%. In the saturated vapor-pressure test, no sample exhibited red ink infiltration, light nor peeling between the encapsulant and the lead-frame. Compared with that of the PiS WLED, the junction temperature of the PiG WLED reduced from 88.4 °C to 81.3 °C. Thermal resistance dropped from 37.4 °C/W to 35.6 °C/W. The PiG WLED presented a better CIE (Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage) 1931 chromaticity coordinate (x,y) concentration and thermal properties than the PiS WLED.

We propose a design method of asymmetric double freeform surface lens for an integrated LED automobile headlamp and develop an integrated LED automobile optical system. A single asymmetric double freeform surface lens is designed to redistribute rays emitting from the light source for realizing both low and high beams. Moreover, a freeform surface reflector is used to improve the energy efficiency of high beams. The prism placed in the optical path can suppress chromatic dispersion on the edge of the target plane. Simulation and experimental results show that the illumination values and color temperature of the key points can fully meet the requirements of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe vehicle regulations (ECE) R112, 48, and 128. The volume of the whole optical system comprised of freeform surface elements is smaller than that of the low beam system of a traditional headlamp, resulting in saved space, in which other electronic devices can be installed for the safety of the driver, which indicates that the proposed method is practical in the field of automobile lighting.

Digital LED drivers capable of blending the spectrum of two LED fixtures with different Correlated Color Temperatures through the LEDs’ power supply control are widespread. However, the digital control of lighting systems is possible only after a careful study of the LED’s response, in terms of illuminance and Correlated Color Temperature. The proposed work takes advantage of the Tunable White technology for the realization of an efficient method for LED light source characterization. In order to evaluate how the light changes as a function of the electric power supplied by the LED drivers, an experimental setup to characterize LED light sources has been designed. Starting from the data acquired from the experimental setup, a model for dimming the LED driver and obtaining the desired values of quality of light has been developed. The proposed model is based on the least squares method and its accuracy is evaluated by comparing the obtained values of illuminance and Correlated Color Temperature with those measured by an illuminance spectrophotometer. Results achieved an error of 0.3% for Correlated Color Temperature and 1.5% for illuminance using the proposed approximation functions.

A systematic search of dust structure in the far infrared (100 μm and 60 μm) IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Satellite) survey was performed using Sky View Observatory. In order to find the possible candidate, we used SIMBAD database to locate discrete sources in the region. A deep cavity-like isolated far infrared dust structure (size ~ 4.46 pc × 2.23 pc) at galactic longitude: 284.360o, galactic latitude: -9.549o was found at the distance of about 375 pc. We have studied the flux density variation and then calculated temperature and mass profile of the dust and excess mass using data reduction software ALADIN 7.5 within this region. The dust color temperature was found to lie in the range 23.40 K to 29.28 K. An offset temperature of about 6.0 K was found. The total mass of the dust structure was found to be about 2.55×1027 kg and the excess mass per pixel was 2.52×1024 kg. We also studied the rate of mass loading around the structure. The energy of the pulsar required to create that in homogeneity in the structure was calculated to be 5.04×1036 J. All-inorganic lead halide perovskite (CsPbX3) nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as a highly promising new generation of light emitters due to their extraordinary photophysical properties. However, the performance of these semiconducting NCs is undermined due to the inherent toxicity of lead and long-term environmental stability. Here, we report the addition of B-site cation and X-site anion (pseudo-halide) concurrently using Ba(SCN)2 (≤50%) in CsPbX3 NCs to reduce the lead and improve the photophysical properties and stability. The as-grown particles demonstrated an analogous structure with an almost identical lattice constant and a fluctuation of particle size without altering the morphology of particles. Photoluminescence quantum yield is enhanced up to near unity (~98%) by taking advantage of concomitant doping at the B- and X-site of the structure. Benefitted from the defect reductions and stronger bonding interaction between Pb2+ and SCN− ions, Ba(SCN)2-based NCs exhibit improved stability towards air and moisture compared to the host NCs. The doped NCs retain higher PLQY (as high as seven times) compared to the host NCs) when stored in an ambient atmosphere for more than 176 days. A novel 3D-printed multiplex color conversion layer was used to fabricate a white light-emitting diode (LED). The obtained white light shows a correlated color temperature of 6764 K, a color rendering index of 87, and luminous efficacy of radiation of 333 lm/W. In summary, this work proposes a facile route to treat sensitive lead halide perovskite NCs and to fabricate LEDs by using a low-cost large-scale 3-D printing method, which would serve as a foundation for fabricating high-quality optoelectronic devices for near future lighting technologies.
