The purpose of this study was to examine the various ways in which independent-feeding patients with dysphagia justified their noncompliance with swallowing recommendations suggested by a speech-language pathologist (SLP). Sixty-three independent-feeding dysphagia patients between the ages of 65 and 100 years who had been identified by the SLP or staff as noncompliant with SLP recommendations were interviewed about their reasons for noncompliance. Reasons were classified into 8 categories: (a) denial of a swallowing problem, (b) dissatisfaction with the preparations such as thickened liquids or pureed foods, (c) assuming a calculated risk for noncompliant behaviors, (d) rationalizing their noncompliance in the face of contradictory evidence, (e) minimization of the severity of their problem, (f) verbal accommodation while maintaining noncompliance, (g) projection of blame toward the SLP, and (h) deflection of noncompliance by referring to an external authority. Reasons for noncompliance were discussed in light of theory and research on denial, coping mechanisms, and the social-cognitive transition model. Implications were drawn for SLP practice in dealing with noncompliant independent-feeding patients with dysphagia.

Interpersonal Acceptance-Rejection theory (IPARTheory) provides a good theoretical framework to explain the parenting dimensions that influence children’s social, cognitive and emotional adjustment. This theory develops one main dimension, warmth-rejection, where warmth would be one pole of the dimension and rejection the opposite one.  Besides, the theory has also defined behavioral control dimension with two poles: permissiveness-strictness. In the context of this theory, our study was conducted with a sample of Spanish parents to (a) examine whether parental perceived acceptance-rejection was related to parental behavioral control; (2) analyze how behavioral control dimension worked in acceptance-rejection theory; and (3) examine whether there were differences in the relations obtained between fathers and mothers. We have to conclude that control behavior correlates positively with warmth behaviors. Fathers’ and mothers’ correlations among these dimensions show that parents can develop certain control behaviors but that they are compatible with affection conducts.

Microprocesses of stage change were studied by applying Snyder and Feldman's consolidation/transition model to substages and subcontents of Selman's stages of friendship reasoning in a six-year longitudinal study of 97 9-to 15-year-old children. It was hypothesised that individuals exhibiting reasoning above their own modal stages would be more likely to experience a developmental advance in modal reasoning, even when examined at the level of substage and subcontent. This was confirmed; however, the amount of variance in above mode reasoning was not related to development. Finally, controversies in the prior literature were explained by methodological differences. It was concluded that the Piagetian processes underlying the Snyder and Feldman model were supported.

Depression and anxiety are common psychological consequences of stroke. Here, we investigated the relationships between cognitive change following stroke, awareness of cognitive impairments, and mood to further understanding of change processes influencing psychological outcomes post-stroke in line with the “Y-shaped” process model. Stroke patients (n = 143) were assessed at 3-weeks (T1) and 6-months (T2) post stroke and had completed the Oxford Cognitive Screen (T1 and T2), the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ; T2), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS; T2). An ANCOVA controlling for disability relating to activities of daily living (ADL) revealed that awareness of cognitive impairment was significantly lower in participants with moderate-severe cognitive impairment. Regression analysis indicated that greater awareness of cognitive impairment and greater independence in ADL were associated with lower HADS scores at T2. Finally, cognitive improvement over time was associated with lower HADS scores at T2. This was moderated by acute cognitive impairment, suggesting that this effect was largest for those most cognitively impaired at T1. Together, predictors explained 36.9% variance in the model, whereby the interaction variable explained 2.2% variance. Targeting those most cognitively impaired post-stroke with cognitive rehabilitation may positively impact their long-term emotional adjustment.

Abstract The natural history of our moral stance told here in this commentary reveals the close nexus of morality and basic social-cognitive capacities. Big mysteries about morality thus transform into smaller and more manageable ones. Here, I raise questions regarding the conceptual, ontogenetic, and evolutionary relations of the moral stance to the intentional and group stances and to shared intentionality.

Background The aim of this study was to determine the clinical efficacy of combining self-management strategies and a social thinking approach to address the social performance and executive function of an adolescent female with autism spectrum disorder. Method This research examined the effects of a social knowledge training program, “Think Social,” as well as strategies to improve higher order cognitive abilities. Results and Conclusion Although quantitative improvement was not found, several qualitative gains in behavior were noted for the participants of this study, suggesting a benefit from using structured environmental cues of self-management strategies, as well as improved social understanding through social cognitive training.
