Trace element levels in the liver of rats with acute and chronic fascioliasis and after treatment with zinc-copper hydroxochloride mixed crystals

AbstractQuantities of trace elements including copper, zinc, cobalt, manganese and iron were investigated in the liver tissue of rats at the acute or chronic stages of fascioliasis following treatment with zinc-copper hydroxochloride mixed crystals. Oral dosing (with food) of zinc–copper mixed crystals to healthy rats increased zinc and copper levels in the liver and decreased the iron content compared with controls. Manganese and cobalt levels did not change significantly. Significant reductions in all trace elements except manganese occurred in the liver of rats with acute or chronic fascioliasis. Manganese levels were slightly increased in rats at the acute stage and slightly decreased in rats at the chronic stage of fascioliasis. The application of mixed zinc–copper crystals at the acute or chronic stages of fascioliasis lead to a restoration of zinc and copper levels and a slight reduction in the iron levels in liver tissue of rats. The beneficial effects of applied salts were more apparent in rats chronically infected withFasciola hepatica.

Purpose: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between MS and the homeostatic state of trace elements, and to reveal the relationship between Fe and Zn in MS pathology Material and Method: Total of 40 (20 patients and 20 control) subjects were participated to this study. Blood samples were taken and analysed plasma iron and zinc levels using an atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Kolmogrow-Smirnov Z test used to analyse statistically significance of the data. P<0.05 was accepted as significant. Results: The plasma iron and Zn levels were found to be significantly lower in MS patients compared to control. Conclusion: Considering the important beneficial effects of iron and zinc against neurodegenerative disease and increased oxidative stress, reduced level of these trace elements should be considered in MS treatment.

Background: This study aims to determine and compare the levels of trace elements copper, zinc, selenium and chromium in GCF and serum of patients with periodontitis and healthy individuals. Methods: This cross sectional study includes 24 study subjects recruited from the patients reporting to the Department of Periodontics , Tagore Dental College Chennai. All the selected patients were subjected to a clinical examination done by a single examiner. The estimation of trace elements Copper, Zinc, Selenium and Chromium in GCF and serum is performed using Perkin Elmer optima 5300 Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometer (ICPOES). Results: GCF and serum copper levels showed no significant difference in both periodontitis and healthy groups . Selenium levels tend to be the same in both groups. Serum zinc levels are more in periodontitis patients than healthy subjects (p less than 0.01). GCF chromium levels are found to be more in patients with periodontitis than healthy. Conclusions : More research is therefore needed to monitor the role of these trace elements C with an increased sample size to ascertain whether they are associated with a reduced risk of periodontitis.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the contamination by mercury (Hg), methylmercury (Me-Hg), cadmium (Cd), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in dolphins stranded on the French Mediterranean coast. The distributions of these contaminants in the organs of dolphins have also been studied. Overall, contamination levels varied according to the following sequence: liver > kidney > lung > muscle, except for cadmium (kidney > liver > lung > muscle). Size and sex of animals were also considered. Young dolphins were less impacted with trace elements than adults, except for copper. Among the studied parameters, the most important appeared to be the size of mammals. In addition, in the case of mercury and selenium, the sex of mammals seemed to be also relevant. The correlations between the concentrations of trace elements suggest the existence of detoxification processes. Since 1990s, using dolphins for tracing marine pollution, a slight reduction in the burden of the considered trace elements could be noted.

Introduction: Chagas disease (CD) is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. When acquired, the disease develops in stages. For diagnosis, laboratory confirmation is required, and an extensive assessment of the patient’s health should be performed. Treatment consists of the administration of trypanocidal drugs, which may cause severe adverse effects. The objective of our systematic review was to analyze data contained in the CD published case reports to understand the challenges that patients and clinicians face worldwide. Materials and methods: We performed a systematic review following the PRISMA guidance. PubMed database was explored using the terms ‘American trypanosomiasis’ or ‘Chagas disease’. Results were limited to human case reports written in English or Spanish. A total of 258 reports (322 patients) were included in the analysis. Metadata was obtained from each article. Following this, it was analyzed to obtain descriptive measures. Results: From the sample, 56.2% were males and 43.8% were females. Most cases were from endemic countries (85.4%). The most common clinical manifestations were fever during the acute stage (70.0%), dyspnea during the chronic stage in its cardiac form (53.7%), and constipation during the chronic stage in its digestive form (73.7%). Most patients were diagnosed in the chronic stage (72.0%). Treatment was administered in 56.2% of cases. The mortality rate for the acute stage cases was 24.4%, while for the chronic stage this was 28.4%. Discussion: CD is a parasitic disease endemic to Latin America, with increasing importance due to human and vector migration. In this review, we report reasons for delays in diagnosis and treatment, and trends in medical practices. Community awareness must be increased to improve CD’s diagnoses; health professionals should be appropriately trained to detect and treat infected individuals. Furthermore, public health policies are needed to increase the availability of screening and diagnostic tools, trypanocidal drugs, and, eventually, vaccines.

Copper, zinc, manganese, molybdenum and cobalt were estimated in the livers of 62 cows. Half of the animals had been treated for 5 weeks with Vevoron, an antithyroid preparation containing methylthiouracil, for fattening. On a low-protein diet the Vevoron had increased slaughter weight and the weight of the livers. The contents in pg. per g. dry liver of Cu, Zn, Mn, Mo and Co in control animals were 116, 144, 10-9, 4-98 and 0-37. In experimental animals they were 120, 125, 8-4, 4-24 and 0-34. Zn, Mn and Mo were significantly decreased by Vevoron. Cu and Co were not significantly affected. In animals with infections except fascioliosis of the liver, and those with fascioliosis of the liver only, the only difference in content of trace elements in the livers was in Cu, which was higher in the healthy animals.-T. The procedure of restorative proctocolectomy is associated with a complete removal of the colon and slight reduction of ileum length, which together can lead to systemic shortages of trace elements. Inflammatory changes in the pouch mucosa may also have some impact. However, there is no data on trace elements in pouchitis. Therefore, in the present study we aimed to assess the effect of acute pouchitis on the status of selected trace elements in rats. Restorative proctocolectomy with the construction of intestinal J-pouch was performed in twenty-four Wistar rats. Three weeks after the surgery, pouchitis was induced. Eight untreated rats created the control group. Liver concentrations of selected micronutrients (Zn, Cu, Co, Mn, Se) were measured in both groups six weeks later, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
