ABSTRACTMuch has been written about the use of French in medieval England. However, with one or two exceptions, relatively little has been written about the language in early modern England. This article aims to provide an account of the use of French as an emigrant language in one of the leading provincial cities in early modern England, Norwich. From 1565 onwards thousands of people from the French-language area migrated to England as a result of economic necessity and religious persecution. Many of them settled in Norwich. As well as these immigrants and their descendants, there were Dutch immigrants in Norwich who spoke French as well as several well-educated individuals from the local English population such as Sir Thomas Browne. This article describes the varieties of French used in Norwich, including Picard, the emerging standard French and Law French. It then discusses how French operated in the multilingual environment of early modern Norwich under the headings of language competition, language contact, bilingualism, code switching, translation, and finally, language shift and recession. It adds not only to our understanding of French in early modern England but also to the literature on French as an emigrant language.

In my essay I trace how – by which means and through what channels – the Ukrainian song «Ĭхав козак за Дунай» (Kozak was riding beyond the Danube) reached Europe at the beginning of the nineteenth-century and then by the means of German mediation, sprang out onto Hungarian territories. In the German language area, it spread essentially as a folk song. Translated (or rather transcribed) into German by Christopher Tidge, the Ukrainian song reached the Kingdom of Hungary most likely together with the troops that took part in the Napoleon wars. At the same time, another version of the song circulated among the Hungarian elite in German culture. The latter was known as Russisches Lied in the translation of Theodor Körner – it was also in vogue and was distributed mainly in print media. The history of this song that in the first decade of the nineteenth century, gained fame in Czech, Polish, and English, has another line that may be interesting from the point of view of Russian and Hungarian literary connections. In 1814, Russian poet Wilhelm Küchelbecker translated the song into German. His translation which remained in the form of the manuscript and was not known to the reading public reveals an amazing similarity and in some places direct coincidences with the poem by the Hungarian poet Count Ferenc Teleki written presumably before 1820.

The paper aims to analyze features of the numerals in the Northern dialects of the Udmurt language. The empirical base of the research is the language materials of the author’s dialectological expeditions to the areas of Northern Udmurt. The relevance of the study is determined by the importance of information about the originality of the Udmurt dialects, common in the Northern language area and having insufficient coverage in the scientific literature. The paper highlights specific features of the Northern Udmurt dialects on the one hand and features with limited diffusion in certain microsystems of studied dialects on the other. The study demonstrates that general characteristics of the numerals in these dialects do not show great differences from those of literary language. The author focuses on features that are highlighted in the phonetic design of individual numerals. Specific phenomena in the formation and use of certain numbering words are noted. The territorial prevalence of dialect modifications of the numerals in the Northern dialect space of the Udmurt language is also revealed. Consistent comparison of the language facts of Northern Udmurt dialects with similar phenomena in other dialects of Udmurt is made.

This article considers the subject of interdisciplinary interaction among specialists working in exact and social sciences as a practice of exchanging ideas about social reality; mutual adaptation of these ideas; empirical verification of the universal formal logic rules applied to specific tasks of sociological research. Such formulation of the subject goes beyond the problem of adapting educational programs to “literacy classes” for potential partners. It is maintained that in inter-professional communication it is important to formulate conceptual systems of common use not “in general”, not for all possible cases, but with regard to the problem addressed by consolidated effort. For such conceptual systems we use the term “common language area” according to the ideas of epistemologists (Ilya Kasavin). Elements of these conceptual systems include paradigms, concepts, tools and procedures mobilized for collaborative work. Readers are offered a description of the experience of cooperation between mathematicians and sociologists in 1990 – 2010s in the qualitative analysis of sociological data — which is an area of concern for both sociology and exact methods. To find a cooperative solution, we needed to develop a system of basic propositions regarding the object and purpose of the research; to put together a structure of sociological data suitable for using the proposed formal tool; to carry out empirical verification of the formalized language of logic-mathematical reasoning. This work has made it possible to explicate the opportunities and limitations when it comes to interpreting results. The article draws conclusions about the specifics of communication in a team of specialists, including sociologists and mathematicians, and about the development of a common language area in the field of cooperation that deals with qualitative analysis of sociological data. Our experience of cooperation in using formalized qualitative analysis of sociological data shows that, when it comes to the need to solve a common problem, partner role relations turned out to be the most effective (rather than role pairs such as “teacher-student” or “seller-buyer”).

As vivências como professora na área da língua inglesa da Educação Básica me motivaram a estudar leitura. A inquietação que surgiu foi: contextualizar culturalmente os temas propostos levaria o aluno a pensar a língua estrangeira com criticidade e consciência das diferenças entre esta e sua língua nativa? Nesta perspectiva, o objetivo deste artigo é documentar uma oficina de leitura em que houve a relação história e arte com critérios definidores do modo de funcionamento da Análise do Discurso francesa e a sua orientação em direção a problemas práticos do cotidiano, relacionados à língua e à comunicação. Para tanto, o estudo analisou e desenvolveu a leitura de um clipe em língua inglesa do ponto de vista da vida contemporânea, repensando o seu objeto de estudo, a escola, os alunos e os professores em diferentes contextos: corpo, etnia, nacionalidade, gênero, classe social, entre outros tópicos, conforme os textos estudados. O método de abordagem foi qualitativo, em pesquisa descritiva e bibliográfica com base nos autores da área da Análise do Discurso francesa, em apenas um clipe, entre oito oficinas compostas de clipes com temas diversificados em linguagem conotativa. Espera-se que o estudo aqui proposto culmine em um ensino que leve o estudante a pensar a outra cultura e, com ela, outras habilidades e competências em língua inglesa e consequentemente evolua com maior fluidez.   Palavras-chave: Ensino. Língua Inglesa. Videoclipe.   Abstract The experiences as a teacher in the English language area of ​​Basic Education motivated me to study reading. The concern that arose was to culturally contextualizing the proposed themes lead the student to think the foreign language with criticism and awareness of the differences between it and his native language? In this perspective, the aim of this article is to document a reading workshop in which there was a relationship between history and art with defining criteria of the way French Discourse Analysis works and its orientation towards practical everyday problems related to language and communication. To this end, the study analyzed and developed the reading of an English-language clip from the point of view of contemporary life, rethinking its object of study, school, students and teachers in different contexts: body, ethnicity, nationality, gender, social class, among other topics, according to the texts studied. The method of approach was qualitative, in descriptive and bibliographical research based on the authors of the French Discourse Analysis area, in only one clip, among eight workshops with clips with diverse themes in connotative language. It is expected that the study proposed here will culminate in a teaching that leads the student to think about another culture and, with it, other skills and competences in English language and consequently evolve with greater fluidity.   Keywords: Teaching. Introduction. Despite the technological development lesion located in or near language area still represent a challenge for every neurosurgeon. Awake craniotomy and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring come to our help. Different techniques variation exists among specialized centres. We present our experience and the set up for this procedure. Materials and methods. We conducted a retrospective analysis of collected data from 10 patients with brain tumours located in or near language area to which we performed awake craniotomy and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. They were admitted in Third Department of Neurosurgery,” Prof. Dr. N. Oblu” Emergency Clinical Hospital, Yassi, Romania, between January 2014 and July 2018. Results. Presenting symptoms had a duration more than a month in 60 % of patients. In 80% of them were represented by epileptic seizures and the rest of 20 % had transient aphasia elements. The median age of presentation was 28 years old with a male dominance. The histological reports indicated: fibrillary astrocytoma – 40%, anaplastic astrocytoma – 30%, oligodendroglioma – 20% and metastases – 10%. Gross total resection was performed in half of the cases and subtotal in just one case, in which the spontaneous speech and object naming showed repeated impairment in time of tumour debulking. The surgical intervention was well tolerated by all the patients. The intensity of cortical stimulation used was between 4 – 10 mA. Postoperatively two patients had neurological aggravation, with full recovery at 3 months follow up period, two were stationary and six had symptoms remission. Conclusion. A young age of presentation, a paucity of symptoms, the chance for an increase in overall survival and progression free survival impose the need for direct communication and feedback with the patient in time of tumour resection. Thus, awake craniotomy and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is the golden standard for selected cases of language area tumours.

In the first part, the study presents a brief characteristics of the development of the Modern High German language after 1650 from the point of view how other languages influenced its vocabulary and analyses numerous loan words. The second part deals with the origins and the first activities of the General German Language Society (from 1885 on) which became the leader in the field of the institutionalised ideological fight against foreign words in the central German language area. The third part introduces the research results of the affiliate societies which were founded in Moravia, one of the part of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown. Both the information in the journal of the General German Language Society and archive documents in three Moravian archives (in Brno, Jihlava and Nový Jičín – the only Moravian cities where affiliate societies were founded) show that their existence was rather a peripheral issue in these cities. As opposed to this, affiliated societies were very active in the cities of northern Bohemia. At the end of the study, the author considers the reasons which caused this kind of situation in Moravia.

"The traditional farewell from men starting their military service belongs to those folk customs, which are remembered only by the older generations. Up to the suspending of mandatory military service in the Hungarian language area, therefore in the Northern part of the Transylvanian Plain as well, the day before the send-off a festive dinner and dance party was organized at the house of the recruit, then in the morning he was accompanied to the railway station with music. The melodies of this custom are quite varied, while the most common starting lines are: “They are cutting (or cleaning) the forest roads, / Taking away our Hungarian boys.” Keywords: Military Songs, Transylvanian Plain, army, custom."
