A Systematic Revision of Melomys (Rodentia:Muridae) of New Guinea

A program of multi-variate discriminant analysis is used to separate approximately 900 specimens, currently identified as species of the genus Melomys, into significantly different taxa at generic, specific and subspecific level. A combination of metric characters and multistate characters is used to indicate phenetic relationships between the taxa previously identified. Metric characters are used in combination with multistate characters to provide diagnoses of genera, and species and subspecies within genera. As a result, Melomys is redefined to include only four species, rufescens, leucogaster, lutillus and frigicola, in New Guinea. Nine species are included in Paramelomys, raised from its previous subgeneric rank. Two species formerly included in Melomys (lanosus and rattoides) are removed to a new genus. Melomys fellowsi is removed to another new genus. Some comments on the generic disposition of extralimital species are made.

Introduction of the new genus Deilagaon with descriptions of new species chrysolepidis (type-species) from the Philippines (type-locality Luzon, ex Ficus chrysolepis Miq.), Celebes, New Guinea (ex F. novoguineensis Corner), Bismarck Archipelago, Solomon Isis.; and annulatae from Thailand, Malaya (ex F.depressa Bl.), Sumatra, Borneo (type-locality N. Borneo, ex F. annulata Bl.), Philippines. Included is also Ceratosolen megarhopalus Grandi (1923) from Thailand, Malaya, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Philippines (Balabac Isl.).

This paper gives a systematic revision of feather mites of the genera Dubininia Vassilev, 1958 and Cacatualges Dabert, Badek and Skoracki, 2007 (Xolalgidae: Ingrassiinae) associated with parrots (Aves: Psittaciformes) of the Old World. Five new species are described: Cacatualges probosciger sp. n. from Probosciger aterrimus (Gmelin) (Cacatuidae) from New Guinea, Dubininia charmosynae sp. n. from Charmosyna pulchella Gray GR (Psittaculidae) from New Guinea, D. micropsittae sp. n. from Micropsitta pusio pusio (Scaltter) (Psittaculidae) from New Guinea, D. nestori sp. n. from Nestor notabilis Gould (Strigopidae) from New Zealand, and D. pezopori sp. n. from Pezoporus wallicus (Kerr) (Psittaculidae) from Tasmania, Australia. Four previously described species of Dubininia are redescribed based on material from type hosts: D. curta (Trouessart, 1885) from Platycercus elegans (Gmelin) (Psittaculidae), D. lorina (Trouessart, 1885) from Lorius domicella (Linnaeus) (Psittaculidae), D. melopsittaci Atyeo and Gaud, 1987 from Melopsittacus undulatus (Shaw) (Psittaculidae), and D. psittacina (Trouessart, 1885) from Strigops harboptilus Gray GR (Strigopidae) from New Zealand. A new diagnosis for the genus Dubininia is provided. A key to all presently known Dubininia species is provided for the first time.

Chondrocyclus Ancey, 1898 is a genus of nine species of African operculate land snails restricted to indigenous forest and mesic thicket. Worn specimens (i.e., without a periostracum or operculum), on which some species descriptions and records were based, appear to be indistinguishable morphologically. A comprehensive revision of Chondrocyclus s.l. is provided here based on comparative morphological examinations of the shell, protoconch, periostracum, operculum, radula and penis, and on mitochondrial genes cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S rRNA. Two genus-level lineages are recognised, Chondrocyclus s.s. and Afrocyclus gen. nov. Revised species descriptions are given for seven species. Two species, C. meredithae Bruggen, 1983 and C. chirindae Bruggen, 1986 both from north of South Africa, are removed from Chondrocyclus. Twelve new species are described: C. herberti sp. nov., C. silvicolus sp. nov., C. amathole sp. nov., C. pondoensis sp. nov., C. devilliersi sp. nov., C. pulcherrimus sp. nov., C. cooperae sp. nov., C. langebergensis sp. nov., C. kevincolei sp. nov., A. oxygala gen. et sp. nov., A. potteri gen. et sp. nov. and A. bhaca gen. et sp. nov. This is the first detailed systematic revision of an Afrotropical cyclophorid group to include morphological and molecular data. This study complements research on other taxa of low-vagility forest-dwelling habitat specialists by providing comparative distribution data for an independent, widespread group. Such evidence is urgently needed for conservation of South Africa’s threatened forest biome.

The Rhytidoponera impressa group is revised on the basis of worker ant morphology, supplemented by information from ecological and genetic studies. Five species are recognized, all of which occur in mesic habitats along the east coast of Australia: chalybaea Emery (New South Wales, southern Queensland), confusa, sp. nov. (Victoria, New South Wales, southern Queensland) enigmatica sp. nov. (Sydney region, N.S.W.),impressa Mayr (Queensland) and purpurea Emery (north Queensland, New Guinea). R. purpurea is the most distinct morphologically. Of the remaining species, chalybaea and confusa are exceedingly similar and in some localities can be unequivocably distinguished only on the basis of electrophoretic (allozyme) differences. Biogeographical relationships of the impressa group are discussed in relation to past climatic and vegetational changes.

AbstractA new genus, Sticholeia, is erected to comprise two new species, cheesmanae and dolichostyla, from New Guinea and Vanuatu, respectively, and an unnamed female from Indonesia. Members of the new genus have two ocelli, a row of strong bristles near the hind margin of the eyes, tibial trichia arranged in regular rows, and strongly prolonged male terminalia. Despite featuring some characters supposed to be diagnostic for the subfamily Manotinae, the new genus is attributed to the tribe Leiini of Sciophilinae. The genus may represent the sistergroup of Allactoneura de Meijere plus Leiella Enderlein. Judged from the distribution of characters among Leiini the monotypic tribe Allactoneurini is rejected.

The anatomies of four well-preserved, fossilised tachyglossid skulls from Naracoorte, South Australia are described and compared with that of a fossilised skull from north-western Tasmania, with those of 13 extant Long-beaked Echidnas, Zaglossus bruijnii, from New Guinea, and with those of II Short-beaked Echidnas, Tachyglossus aculeatus. The difference in structure and proportions of the rostrums, palates and craniums of the fossil forms from those of Z. bruijnii and T. aculeatus are so great that it is concluded that the former should be placed in a new genus; the name Megalibgwilia is proposed. From the conformation of the rostrum and palate it is suggested that the principal prey of Megalibgwilia was large insects such as scarab and moth larvae, not oligochaete worms as is the case with Z. bruijnii.
