New host records for ticks (Acari : Ixodidae) from the echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) revealed in Australian museum survey

A nationwide survey was conducted for ticks (Ixodidae) removed from echidnas, Tachyglossus aculeatus (Shaw, 1792), that had been previously collected between 1928 and 2013, and archived within Australian national (Australian National Insect Collection, Australian Capital Territory) and state (Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia) natural history collections. A total of 850 ticks from 89 T. aculeatus hosts were morphologically identified to determine instar, sex and species. Seven larvae, 349 nymphs and 494 adults were identified; 235 were female and 259 were male. The most common tick species was Bothriocroton concolor (Neumann, 1899) (89.2%). In addition, ticks previously recorded from T. aculeatus were identified, including Amblyomma australiense Neumann, 1905 (1.8%), Amblyomma echidnae Roberts, 1953 (0.1%), Bothriocroton hydrosauri (Denny, 1843) (1.4%), Bothriocroton tachyglossi (Roberts, 1953) (1.5%) and Ixodes tasmani Neumann, 1899 (1.2%). For the first time, 22 Amblyomma fimbriatum Koch, 1844 (2.6%) and 19 Amblyomma triguttatum Koch, 1844 (2.2%) ticks were recorded from T. aculeatus. This is the first survey to utilise archived Australian tick collections for the purpose of acquiring new data on tick species that parasitise T. aculeatus.

New larval hosts and locality data of an enigmatic tick, Nuttalliella namaqua Bedford, 1931 (Acari: Nuttalliellidae) are recorded. Most of the discovered larvae were found on various species of murid rodents (Rodentia: Muridae), while few larvae were collected on a petromurid rodent (Rodentia: Petromuridae), canid (Carnivora: Canidae), hares (Lagomorpha: Leporidae) and elephant shrew (Macroscelidea: Macroscelididae). Eight species of hosts are new host records for larvae of N. namaqua. This tick species is recorded for the first time from Botswana and Mozambique as well as from new localities in Namibia and South Africa.

A new species, Glyptapanteles hypermnestrae Gupta and Pereira, is described from Maharashtra, India, and comparedwith closely allied species. This new species was bred from parasitized larvae of Elymnias hypermnestra (Linnaeus) (Lep-idoptera: Nymphalidae). In addition to this, two hymenopteran parasitoids, Apanteles folia Nixon (Braconidae: Microgas-trinae) and Brachymeria indica (Krausse) (Chalcididae), are for first time reported parasitizing larvae of Arhopalaamantes (Hewitson) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) and pupae of Pareronia valeria (Cramer) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) respectively.

Mazocraeoides georgei price, 1936 and mazocraeoides opisthonema Hargis, 1955 are reported for the first time in Brazil in Brevoortia aurea (Spix, 1829) and in Harengula clupeola (Cuvier, 1829) respectively, clupeid fishes from the littoral of Rio de janeiro State, which represent new host records. Mazocraeoides olentangiensis Sroufe, 1958 and mazocraeoides hargisi Price, 1961 are considered new synonyms for Mazocraeoides georgei.

In the present study, we report tick infestations on wild birds in plots of the Atlantic Forest reforested fragments with native species and plots reforested with Eucalyptus tereticornis in the municipality of Rio Claro, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. A total of 256 birds were captured: 137 individuals of 33 species, in planted native forest; and 128 individuals of 37 species, in planted Eucalyptus tereticornis forest. Nymphs of two tick species were found on the birds: Amblyomma calcaratumand Amblyomma longirostre, the former was more abundant in the fragments reforested with Atlantic forest native species, and the latter in the fragment reforested with E. tereticornis. New host records were presented for A. calcaratum.

This study provides an update on the ectoparasites (ticks and leeches) associated with Rhinoclemmys annulata and provides new accounts on the ectoparasites associated with R. nasuta, R. melanosterna andKinosternon leucostomum from the Pacific coast of Colombia. The presence ofAmblyomma sabanerae on R. nasuta and R. melanosterna provided two new host records for the tick species. Also, the documentation ofA. sabanerae from the Department of Valle del Cauca represents a new department record for the species in Colombia. Placobdella ringueleti was identified fromR. nasuta and K. leucostomum, which represents a new host record for the leech species, as well as a significant extension of the known range.

Coprinus phaeosporus Karst., Hypholoma subericaceum (Fr.) Kühner, Mycena tubarioides (Maire) Kühner, and Stropharia pseudocyanea (Desm.) comb. nov. are documented from North America for the first time. Agaricus albocyaneus Desm. ex Fr. is shown to be an error for A. pseudocyaneus Desm. Agrocybe paludosa (Lange) Kühner & Romagnesi, Coprinus martinii Favre ex Orton and C. subimpatiens Lange & Smith are reported from Canada. Range extensions or new host records are noted for Coprinus stercoreus Fr., C. urticicola (Berk. & Br.) Buller, Marasmius limosus Quél., Melanotus caricicola (Orton) Guz., Mycena juncicola (Fr.) Gillet, Pholiota graminis (Quél.) Singer, and Resinomycena saccharifera (Berk. & Br.) comb. nov. Resinomycena kalalochensis subsp. saccharifera in Europe and subsp. kalalochensis (Smith) comb. nov. in western North America are vicariant taxa.

Our study yielded a list of ticks found on amphibians and reptiles at five sites within seasonally dry Amazon forest in Mato Grosso State, central Brazil, in addition to new host records for A. rotundatum. We collected 431 tick specimens: 79 larvae, 115 nymphs, 38 females, and 199 males belonging to A. humerale, A. rotundatum, and Amblyomma sp., on 39 anurans and 21 reptiles. The toads R. guttatus and R. margaritifera and the frog L. pentadactylus are new hosts for A. rotundatum.

The species was found in the material from 8 amphibian host species, of whichLissotriton montadoni, Triturus cristatus, Mesotriton alpestris, Pelophylax ridibunda, P. lessonae, andHyla arboreaare new host records. Newts (Salamandridae) and green frogs (Pelophylax) are considered to be typical hosts forO. duboisi. Thirteen specimens of Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin, 1789) from three areas of the Chaqueña Subregion of Argentina were examined for digeneans. Ten species were found: four diplostomids (Austrodiplostomum mordax, A. ostrowskiae, Tylodelphys adulta and Hysteromorpha triloba), three echinostomatids (Drepanocephalus spathans, Paryphostomum segregatum, and P. parvicephalum), one strigeid (Strigea falconis brasiliana), one psilostomid (Ribeiroia ondatrae) and one prosthogonimid (Prosthogonimus ovatus). Tylodelphys adulta and S. f. brasiliana are reported for the first time as parasites of P. brasilianus and new geographical records are presented.

AbstractDipetalonema caudispina (Molin, 1858) and D. gracile (Rudolphi, 1809) (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) are two of six known species of filarial nematodes that parasitize Neotropical non-human primates. Adult filariae were collected from the thoracic and abdominal cavities of 38 of 44 specimens of Sapajus macrocephalus (Spix, 1823) and nine of ten specimens of Cebus albifrons (Humboldt, 1812) (Primates: Cebidae), distributed in the Yavarí-Mirín river basin and used locally for human consumption. Co-occurrence of D. caudispina and D. gracile is reported for the first time, with a prevalence of 18.5% (10 of 54 hosts examined). Our finding of D. caudispina and D. gracile in cebids from the Peruvian Amazon constitutes a new geographical record for both filariae, two new host records for D. caudispina, and the first report of D. gracile in S. macrocephalus. In addition, we provide morphometric data for D. caudispina, complementing the original description, as well as scanning electron microscopy details on the structure of the area rugosa and number of caudal papillae in males.
