Effectiveness and Cost-Efficiency of Control of the Wild Rabbit, Oryctolagus Cuniculus (L.), By Combinations of Poisoning, Ripping, Fumigation and Maintenance Fumigation.

An experiment compared effectiveness, cost and cost-efficiency of factorial combinations of the four commonly used methods of rabbit control on grazing properties in the Southern Tablelands of eastern Australia. Sixteen different treatment combinations were applied to 32 sites. The treatments comprised initial control, applied over four months, followed by repeated maintenance control on half the replicates, applied after intervals of 2,6 and 12 months. Initial control comprised no treatment, or poisoning (P) with sodium monofluoroacetate (1080), or warren-ripping (R), or chloropicrin pressure fumigation (F), or combinations of these (P+R, P+F, R+F, P+R+F). Maintenance control consisted of phosphine-diffusion fumigation (M). Indices of rabbit abundance were compared one month before treatments were implemented. Treatment effects were assessed one month after completion of the initial control, and one and 5-6 months after the three maintenance controls, and additionally nine months after the second maintenance control. Control combinations that were highly effective and cost-efficient included both warren-ripping and maintenance treatment. Poisoning prior to warren-ripping, or fumigating subsequently, or both, improved effectiveness and cost-efficiency. Warren-ripping interacted positively with one or more subsequent fumigations, improving effectiveness and cost-efficiency non-additively. Control combinations that excluded warren-ripping were ineffective and cost-inefficient, and one combination interacted negatively. Single treatments of poisoning or fumigation were cost-inefficient, allowing rabbits to recolonise rapidly to densities higher than original. Only multiple combination treatments or repeated applications were highly effective and cost-efficient; single applications of any method were inefficient and costly. The most effective and cost-efficient combination comprised the maximum six applications including ripping and maintenance treatment, namely P+R+F+M. The high effort and expenditure on the initial control resulted in high effectiveness and cost-efficiency, which maintenance control sustained at low cost. Maintenance treatments sustained or achieved effective control of rabbits; the cost of maintenance treatments halved on each repetition.

Volatile compounds are ubiquitous in plants, giving fruits their characteristic aroma and flavor. There is increasing evidence that these compounds can protect plants from pathogenic organisms. In this trial ≈25 volatile compounds were tested for efficacy against Monilinia fructicola and Penicillium expansum. Both in vitro tests on agar plugs of actively growing pathogens and in situ tests on inoculated stone fruits and pears were conducted. The volatile compounds were grouped into three categories based upon fungicidal activity in vitro: highly effective (fungicidal concentration ≤100 M), moderately effective (fungicidal concentration between 100–200 M) and ineffective (fungicidal concentration >200 M). Highly effective compounds included: acetaldehyde, citral, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 2,exadienal, E-2-hexenal, 4-hexen-3-one, linalool, (E,E)2,4-nonadienal, E-2-nonenal, E-3-none-2-one, salicylaldehyde, and valeraldehyde. Moderately effective compounds included: (E,Z) 2,6-nonadienal, propionaldehyde, terpinene, butyl acetate, E-cinnamaldehde, hexanal, E-2-hexen-1-ol, Z-3-hexen-1-ol and isoamyl acetate. Ineffective compounds included: butyrolactone, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and methyl acetate. Effectiveness of the compounds varied with both strain and type of microorganism tested. Concentraions required for effective control were much higher when the compounds were tested on inoculated fruit. Phytotoxicity was a problem with some compounds.

Translocation of dead wood is a novel method for ecological compensation and restoration that could, potentially, provide a new important tool for biodiversity conservation. With this method, substrates that normally have long delivery times are instantly created in a compensation area, and ideally many of the associated dead wood dwelling organisms are translocated together with the substrates. However, to a large extent, there is a lack of knowledge about the cost efficiency of different methods of ecological compensation. Therefore, the costs for different parts of a translocation process and its dependency on some influencing factors were studied. The observed cost was 465 SEK per translocated log for the actual compensation measure, with an additional 349 SEK/log for work to enable evaluation of the translocation’s ecological results. Based on time studies, models were developed to predict required work time and costs for different transportation distances and load sizes. Those models indicated that short extraction and insertion distances for logs should be prioritized over road transportation distances to minimize costs. They also highlighted a trade-off between costs and time until a given ecological value is reached in the compensation area. The methodology used can contribute to more cost-efficient operations and, by doing so, increase the use of ecological compensation and the benefits from a given input.

In low oil price environments, conducting affordable enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects can be very challenging. One item of interest for successful future EOR should be in how produced fluids are treated and how to achieve cost-efficiency. Nanoflooding, is an emerging EOR technique, which has attracted deployment in recent years. Meanwhile, Indonesia continues to progress towards the national oil and gas production target of one million barrels per day by 2030. This paper presents the observation of opportunities and challenges of using nanoflooding to enable oil and gas production in Indonesia to achieve its desired targets. The study began by mapping the pain points in major oilfields in Indonesia. We observed and discussed the advantage and limitation of traditional mature EOR techniques, status, and ongoing application of EOR in Indonesia. Then, we briefly explained the main reasons why nanoflooding can be considered for future implementation in accelerating oil production in Indonesia, including a discussion about a successful pilot test. As an emerging EOR technique, nanoflooding can be considered as a cost-efficient technique. Silica-based nanofluid can be accessed in a cost-efficient manner and can be executed from an implementation standpoint considering surface facilities. The mechanism that is introduced can help to displace incremental oil more effectively since it can go inside pore throats due to the nano-size. We observed several recognized benefits and challenges to deploy nanoflooding in Indonesia. Based on this study, nanoflooding is very attractive and has potential to be implemented.

<p>Cracks considerably reduce the life span of pavement surfaces. Currently, there is a need for the development of robust automated distress evaluation systems that comprise a low-cost crack detection method for performing fast and cost-effective roadway health monitoring practices. Most of the current methods are costly and have labor-intensive learning processes, so they are not suitable for small local-level projects with limited resources or are only usable for specific pavement types.</p> <p>This paper proposes a new method that uses an improved version of the weighted neighborhood pixels segmentation algorithm to detect cracks in 2-D pavement images. This method uses the Gaussian cumulative density function as the adaptive threshold to overcome the drawback of fixed thresholds in noisy environments. The proposed algorithm was tested on 300 images containing a wide range of noise representative of different noise conditions. This method proved to be time and cost-efficient as it took less than 3.15 seconds per 320 × 480 pixels image for a Xeon (R) 3.70 GHz CPU processor to determine the detection results. This makes the model a perfect choice for county-level pavement maintenance projects requiring cost-effective pavement crack detection systems. The validation results were promising for the detection of low to severe-level cracks (Accuracy = 97.3%, Precision = 79.21%, Recall= 89.18% and F<sub>1</sub> score = 83.9%).</p>

This research is attempted to analyze the practices of mobile court and compare it with others. Based on the results of the study, the conclusions that can be obtained are that the implementation of the circuit court conducted at the Tasikmalaya District Religious Court has fulfilled several principles of civil procedural law, namely fast, simple and low cost. Among them when people who experience obstacles to come to the court office for reasons of distance, transportation and costs of the court come directly to the location, the bureaucracy is not complicated meaning that the implementation of the trial must be completed no later than 4 times the hearing, and the existence of an effective control system and various elements. Obstacles in the conduct of circuit courts include no standard guidelines for the holding of circuit courts, not all cases registered by residents are resolved in circuit courts, limited budgets, cases that have not been heard are all without prodeo, facilities and infrastructure, and not all religious courts hold circuit courts.
