Impact of Wildfire on the Nesting behaviour of Birds in Heathland

This paper describes the effects of wildfire on the nesting behaviour of some species of birds in a heathland community at Gooseberry Hill, Western Australia. The most severe fire during the nine year (1981-89) study was a hot summer burn in January 1985, which destroyed 95% of the study area. In the spring following that fire, 81% of the species previously known to breed in the area were still able to nest. The nesting substrate, height, site and aspect for three of the most abundant species (splendid fairy-wrens, western thornbills and yellow-rumped thornbills) were examined in detail. In the immediate post-fire year, all three used as nest sites only those plant species which regenerate by sprouting. The mean height of splendid fairy-wren nests in shrubs was lower than in unburnt habitat, although the wrens also built some nests in unusually high sites in trees in the first two seasons after fire. The mean height of western thornbill nests did not change but nest placement in a favoured substrate, Xanthorrhoea preissii, varied according to time since fire. Yellow-rumped thornbill nests built in burnt habitat tended to be higher and in a more restricted range of substrates than previously. Breeding of splendid fairy-wrens was delayed by three to five weeks in the first year after fire and the number of nests built per group had almost doubled by the second season. Only 59% of adult female western thornbills attempted to nest in the season immediately following the 1985 fire and the onset of breeding in burnt habitat was up to five weeks later than in unburnt. The delay by splendid fairy-wrens and western thornbills was attributed to a shortage of nesting material and adequate food for egg production, respectively, whereas the increase in the number of nests built by splendid fairy-wrens was attributed to a high rate of nest failure. At least two species (white-browed scrubwren and white-cheeked honeyeater) did not nest for two years after the 1985 fire and Acanthiza apicalis has not nested up to the present time (five years). The fire-modified habitat appeared beneficial to little button-quail and elegant parrot, which nested on the study area only after fire. White-winged triller and dusky woodswallow were more numerous breeders after fire than previously. Our findings highlight the importance of detailed long-term studies for estimating adequate fire-free intervals necessary for the conservation of resident avian species. A minimum period of at least 10 years is suggested for heathlands of south-western Australia.

The First Year Egg Production of Barred Plymouth Rocks by V. S. Asmundson, University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Scientific Agriculture, Vol. IX., No. 2, 1928.In this study of 569 records of first year production it was found that average production had increased by nearly twenty eggs or from 187 eggs in 1920–21 to 206 in 1925–26. The mean annual egg production of the 569 birds was 198 eggs which was practically identical with the average for Barred Rock pullets entered in the British Columbia contests.

In April 1994, an intense fire burnt part of Smith's Brook Nature Reserve near Manjimup, Western Australia where we had studied an individually marked population of the Red-winged Fairy-wren Malurus elegans in Karri Eucalyptus diversicolor forest since 1980. We estimated the population size in a 25 ha area at the start of the breeding season each year 1980?95, including two years post-fire. In the 32 territories present in 1993, the entire area of 26 was almost completely burnt to a height of 10 m, with few remaining unburnt patches. The mean population size for the 13 years 1981?93 was 119 birds in a mean of 29 groups. In November 1993, 126 birds were present in 32 groups. In November 1994, following the April fire, there were 114 birds in 31 groups, but nesting substrate was very scarce, breeding was delayed, and only 0.18 yearling males per group were produced, compared with 0.52 for the years 1981?93. By November 1995, the population had fallen to 73 birds in 23 groups with nine territories vacant. The time necessary for the population to recover to its prefire level was estimated from long-term demographic data to be at least 10 years, longer than the present cycle of 7?9 years for prescribed burns in the southern (Karri) State Forests of Western Australia.

The size, age and condition of Perth herring, N. vlaminghi, in the Swan Estuary in south-western Australia, were investigated between February 1977 and January 1980 using samples collected by beach seine and gill net. An examination of scale annuli showed that the population consisted predominantly of age classes 0+ to 4 +. By the end of their first year of life, Perth herring had reached mean lengths of 105 mm (= 9.8 g) in 1977, 105 mm (= 10.0 g) in 1978, and 95 mm (= 7.9 g) in 1979. The von Bertalanffy growth equation was calculated to be Lt = 381{1 -exp[- O.17(t + 0.6S)]}. During winter, the growth rate declined markedly and the mean condition factor fell to its lowest level. Perth herring started to make a major contribution to the important commercial fishery for this species during their third year of life.

Population dynamics and life history traits of the ‘giant’ limpet Scutellastra laticostata on intertidal limestone platforms at Rottnest Island, Western Australia, were recorded by interannual (January/February) monitoring of limpet density and size structure, and relocation of marked individuals, at 3 locations over periods of 13-16 yr between 1993 and 2020. Limpet densities ranged from 4 to 9 ind. m-2 on wave-swept seaward margins of platforms at 2 locations and on a rocky notch at the landward margin of the platform at a third. Juvenile recruits (25-55 mm shell length) were present each year, usually at low densities (<1 m-2), but localized pulses of recruitment occurred in some years. Annual survival rates of marked limpets varied among sites and cohorts, ranging from 0.42 yr-1 at the notch to 0.79 and 0.87 yr-1 on the platforms. A mass mortality of limpets on the platforms occurred in 2003, likely mediated by thermal stress during daytime low tides, coincident with high air temperatures and calm seas. Juveniles grew rapidly to adult size within 2 yr. Asymptotic size (L∞, von Bertalanffy growth model) ranged from 89 to 97 mm, and maximum size from 100 to 113 mm, on platforms. Growth rate and maximum size were lower on the notch. Our empirical observations and simulation models suggest that these populations are relatively stable on a decadal time scale. The frequency and magnitude of recruitment pulses and high rate of adult survival provide considerable inertia, enabling persistence of these populations in the face of sporadic climatic extremes.

Abstract Background Osteoporotic fractures impose significant costs on society. The objective of this study was to estimate the direct costs of the hip, vertebral, and forearm fractures in the first year after fracture incidence in Iran. Methods We surveyed a sample of 300 patients aged over 50 years with osteoporotic fractures (hip, vertebral, and forearm) admitted to four hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran, during 2017 and were alive six months after the fracture. Inpatient cost data were obtained from the hospital patient records. Using a questionnaire, the data regarding outpatient costs were collected through a phone interview with patients at least six months after the fracture incidence. Direct medical and non-medical costs were estimated from a societal perspective. All costs were converted to the US dollar using the average exchange rate in 2017 (1USD = IRR 34,214) Results The mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of the patient was 69.83 ± 11.25 years, and 68% were female. One hundred and seventeen (39%) patients had hip fractures, 56 (18.67%) patients had vertebral fractures, and 127 (42.33%) ones had forearm fractures. The mean direct cost (medical and non-medical) during the year after hip, vertebral and forearm fractures were estimated at USD5,381, USD2,981, and USD1,209, respectively. Conclusion The direct cost of osteoporotic fracture in Iran is high. Our findings might be useful for the economic evaluation of preventive and treatment interventions for osteoporotic fractures as well as estimating the economic burden of osteoporotic fractures in Iran.

Background Scaphoid nonunion can occur in up to 55% of displaced scaphoid fractures. Long-term functional outcomes of this injury are lacking. In addition, no study has published rate of return to active military service after this injury. Our goal was to educate providers and patients on expected functional outcomes and return to duty after treatment of scaphoid nonunion. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of patients who underwent scaphoid nonunion repair at our institution from 2008 to 2017. The primary outcome measures were union rates, return to duty rates, and functional outcome scores obtained by telephone call. A total of 144 patients were included and 40 responded to our call for long-term follow-up. Results A total of 72% of patients achieved union after surgery, 18% required revision surgery, and 74% of patients were able to return to full duty after surgery. However, this number progressively decreased at 1, 2, and 5 years after surgery. At an average of 5.9 years after surgery, the mean Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (qDASH) score was 23.9. The mean qDASH for patients who achieved union (21.9) was significantly lower than those with persistent nonunion (29.2) ( P = .0115). Conclusion Scaphoid nonunion is a difficult problem in the military. We found a high rate of persistent nonunion often requiring revision to partial or full wrist arthrodesis. In addition, our long-term functional outcome scores demonstrate significant disability after this injury, even when union is achieved. This information can help us better counsel our patients and set expectations after treatment of this injury.

The establishment, staffing and structure and observations made in the first year of the existence of coronary care in an intensive care unit in a general hospital are recorded. Two hundred and twenty eight patients were admitted during the year in whom the diagnosis of myocardial infarction was confirmed. There were 29 deaths in the unit and 14 deaths occurred in the wards of the hospital after discharge from the unit. 49.1 per cent of the patients were admitted within 4 hours of the onset of symptoms and the mean duration of stay in the unit was 86.5 hours. The type of arrhythmia detected in the unit, and the treatment given to the patients both before and after admission to the intensive care unit are described.

A sample of 4973 kidneys from sheep stratified by age and shire of origin within the Agricultural Region of Western Australia, was analysed for cadmium (Cd) content during the period August 1989 to April 1991. The geometric mean Cd concentration in the kidney of hogget ewes was 0.9 mg/kg, in 4-tooth ewes 1.47 mg/kg and in adult ewes 3.34 mg/kg on a wet weight basis. The mean Cd concentrations of either ewe or hogget flocks from different Divisions of the Agricultural Region did not differ from each other. The annual increase in Cd concentration of kidney from hogget sheep was estimated to be 0-65 mg/kg. The rate of accumulation of Cd in kidney from cattle and sheep grazing the same properties was similar. Kidneys from a sample of 354 adult cattle from the Kimberley Region and 483 aged sheep from the Pastoral Region, both areas of unimproved rangelands, had geometric mean Cd concentrations of 0.15 mg/kg and 0-31 mg/kg respectively. A higher Cd concentration in flocks from the divisions adjacent to the Agricultural Region may have resulted from the establishment of some volunteer species of winter annual pastures in the rangeland.

Fifty-four subjects (36 females and 18 males) affected by clinically definite multiple sclerosis (MS) and with onset of the disease at 15 years of age or before were prospectively studied in five Italian MS centres. Female/male ratio was 4.7 in subjects with age ≥12 years, suggesting a role of hormonal changes in triggering MS onset. The mean follow-up duration was 10.9-5.6 years. The functional systems more frequently involved at onset were the pyramidal and brainstem (both in 28% of cases). The onset was monosymptomatic in 31 subjects (57%). The course was relapsing-remitting in 39 subjects (72%) and relapsing-progressive in 15 (28%). Disability was assessed by the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS): the mean score after 8 years of follow up was 3.5 (-2.5). The score was <4 in 68% of cases, between 4 and 6 in 8% of cases, > 6 in 24% of cases. Disability after 8 years was highly predicted by disability in the first year (p=0.008). There was a tendency to a worse prognosis in relation to the number of relapses in the first 2 years (p=0.08). The outcome was not influenced by the characteristics of symptoms at onset, age and gender.
