The Distribution of Arboreal Marsupials in Relation to Eucalypt Forest Types in the Eden (Nsw) Woodchip Concession Area.

Data collected during clear felling are collated and presented on the distribution of arboreal marsupials in 16 forest vegetation types (FVT) in 7 FVT groups. Eight species were included in the study: Petaurus breviceps, P. australis, P. norfolcensis, Petauroides volans, Acrobates pygmaeus, Trichosurus vulpecula, Pseudocheirus peregrinus and Cercartetus nanus. Most of the individuals reported were in the following 6 FVTs: swamp gum (characterized by Eucalyptus ovata); mountain gum (E. dalrympleana)/manna gum (E. viminalis); peppermint (E. radiata or E. dives); southern blue gum (E. maidenii, E. cypellocarpa or E. nitens); brown barrel (E. fastigata); and brown barrel/gum (E. cypellocarpa, E. nitens, E. maidenii, E. viminalis or E. dalrympleana). The results are discussed in relation to present forest management and forest clearing procedures in the Eden region. Forests about to be cleared for Pinus radiata plantations or for farmland on private property adjacent to State Forests are predominantly of types identified as of high value as wildlife habitat.

Two arboreal marsupials, the eastern pygmy possum (Cercartetus nanus) and the sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) have exceptionally low maintenance nitrogen requirements on pollen diets. This study compares their nitrogen requirements with the density of Banksia pollen that is available in the Barren Grounds Nature Reserve, New South Wales, a site where both species are known to forage on Banksia inflorescences. The pollen density was sufficiently high that both species were capable of meeting their maintenance nitrogen requirements on pollen whenever Banksia spp. were in flower. C. nanus required a smaller proportion of its home range than P. breviceps to do so and pollen was likely to be of much greater nutritional significance to both species in winter than in summer. This corresponds closely with the results of field studies comparing the diets of these mammals at different times of the year. Pollen is an important source of nitrogen for flower-feeding marsupials but its importance will vary between species depending on the marsupial's requirements, its body size and on the quantity of pollen that is available.

This study reports the diet of the powerful owl (Ninox strenua) in East Gippsland, from a dataset of 2009 vertebrate prey items collected from 53 sites. Mammals dominated the diet at all sites, but birds were also consumed regularly. The greater glider (Petauroides volans) was the dominant dietary item across the region in terms of both frequency of consumption and biomass contribution. There was geographical dietary variation between coastal and foothill forest sites, with the sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) and birds consumed more frequently in foothill forests, whereas the common ringtail possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) was frequently consumed only in coastal forests. Typically, a higher percentage of powerful owl diet comprised birds closer to cleared land. The dietary reliance upon hollow-dependent mammals in foothill forests (averaging >70%) is of conservation concern, especially when non-hollow-dependent prey are rare. Forest management activities, especially logging, that reduce densities of hollow-bearing trees in the landscape are therefore likely to decrease the long-term carrying capacity of the landscape for the powerful owl.

Seven species of possums and gliders were found during a survey in logged coastal forests near Bega, New South Wales. A study of the preferences for the various tree species showed that both commercial and non-commercial species must be retained to support the full range of possum and glider species. Spotlight searches were carried out in 6 adjacent felling areas each autumn from 1981 to 1983. Four species (Petaurus breviceps, P. australis, Petauroides volans and Pseudocheirus peregrinus) were seen frequently enough to determine their habitat preferences. There were significantly fewer possums and gliders in logged areas, with a greater effect on some species, e.g. P. volans, than others, e.g. P. breviceps. Fire rendered the logged areas even less habitable, and drought compounded the effects of logging and fire by further reducing numbers. Deep unlogged gullies were found to be crucial refuges from logging, fire and drought. The primary conclusions are that the current logging operation is causing a significant reduction in numbers, and that gullies need to be redefined to include all drainage lines and to remain unlogged.

[See also FA 39, 2088] A 2-yr trapping study was made on (a) Rattus fuscipes, (b) Antechinus stuartii, (c) Mus musculus and (d) A. swainsonii in mature eucalypt forest, a narrow stream-side strip of eucalypt forest, and in 3 pine plantations, 8, 22 and 42 yr old. In each area (a) and (d) were largely and (c) always confined to dense native vegetation along streams, whilst (b) was more frequent along streams than on slopes. More animals were found away from streams in young pine plantations than in other forest types.

There are conflicting conclusions on how the flammability of wet eucalypt forests changes in the time after disturbances such as logging or wildfire. Some conclude that forests are most flammable in the decades following disturbance, while others conclude that disturbance has no effect on flammability. The comparative flammability of Eucalyptus nitens plantations in the same environment as wet eucalypt forest is not known. We determined fire incidence and fire severity in regrowth, mature and old growth wet eucalypt forest, and E. nitens plantation, in the Huon Valley, Tasmania after the January–February 2019 wildfire. To control for topographic variation and fire weather, we randomly selected sites within the fire footprint, then randomly located a paired site for each in different forest types in the same topographic environment within 3 km. Each pair of sites was burned on the same day. Old growth forest and plantations were the least likely to burn. Old growth and mature forest exhibited scorched eucalypt crowns to a much lesser degree than regrowth forests. In a comparison of paired sites, plantation forest was less likely to burn than combined mature and old growth forests, but in all cases of detected ignition the canopy of plantation was scorched. The lower flammability of older forests, and their importance as an increasing store of carbon, suggests that a cessation of logging outside plantations might have considerable benefits.

Abstract ContextAccurate estimates of abundance are extremely useful for wildlife management and conservation. Estimates generated from distance sampling are typically considered superior to strip transects and abundance indices, as the latter do not account for probability of detection, thereby risking significant error. AimTo compare density estimates generated from conventional distance sampling (CDS) of arboreal marsupials with strip transect density estimates and abundance indices. MethodsOff-track CDS and strip transects were used to estimate densities of P. volans and P. peregrinus across ~2.6km2 of remnant eucalypt forest at Mt Duval in north-eastern New South Wales. Key resultsCDS density estimates for P. volans (1.36ha−1, 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.07–1.72ha−1) and P. peregrinus (0.28ha−1, 95% CI 0.22–0.35ha−1) were consistent with densities reported in other studies conducted in open eucalypt forests. A strip transect width of 40m for P. volans resulted in a collective set of values for density (1.35ha−1), error (s.e.±0.14), precision (cv 0.10) and 95% CI (1.07–1.62ha−1) closest to those associated with the CDS-generated density estimate (1.36ha−1, s.e.±0.15, cv 0.10, 95% CI 1.07–1.72ha−1). Strip widths of 10 to 40m resulted in density estimates for P. peregrinus closest to those generated through CDS, but much less precise. ConclusionsAlthough a 40-m wide strip transect provided a robust density estimate for P. volans at Mt Duval, this is unlikely to be consistent across different study areas. Strip transects provided less precise density estimates, or underestimated P. peregrinus density at Mt Duval, when compared with CDS density estimates. CDS should be favoured over strip transects or abundance indices for estimating P. volans and P. peregrinus abundance, because it is capable of providing more meaningful and robust abundance estimates by accounting for the probability of detection from the transect line across different habitats. ImplicationsResearchers, conservation managers and decision makers should be aware that common methods for assessing arboreal marsupial abundance have serious potential weaknesses. Thus, it would be prudent to invest in studies that address imperfect detection to improve the quality of monitoring data.

A method is described that stabilizes vacuolar tannins in unchewed leaves of Eucalyptus ovata. This method, with light microscopy and electron microscopy, was used to study the fate of digesta in the gut of the common ringtail possum Pseudocheirus peregrinus. Normal animals (fed fresh foliage and practising coprophagy) were compared with animals denied access either to fresh foliage or to soft faecal pellets in the week before they were killed. Both manipulations appear to disturb gut function and create a need for caution in interpreting the observations. Nonetheless the results demonstrate some tanning of leaf cytoplasts in the ringtail possum, but the quantitative significance of the dietary losses so incurred is difficult to estimate. Partial digestion of cell walls and tanned cytoplasts occurs in the caecum, where massive populations of micro-organisms become attached to digestion-resistant tissue components. These 'microbial rafts' are reingested as soft pellets by coprophagy and the bacteria largely digested.

Nest boxes have been recognised as research and management tools for arboreal marsupials in Australia for over 20 years. We review the published literature with the aim of describing the scope of studies conducted in Australia thus far and providing guidance to future research. We recognise three types of application in research: (1) detection of species, (2) study of a species’ ecology, and (3) investigation of box designs preferred by different species. Several species of arboreal marsupial may be detected more readily in nest boxes than by conventional survey techniques, allowing description of key aspects of their ecology; e.g. feathertail glider (Acrobates pygmaeus), eastern pygmy possum (Cercartetus nanus) and brush-tailed phascogale (Phascogale tapoatafa). Identifying the most favoured nest-box design for any species has implications for detection and management uses of nest boxes. More research is needed but preliminary findings suggest that species prefer narrow entrance holes, while height of the nest box above 3 m may be inconsequential. We recognise three types of management application: (1) species introduction, (2) support of populations of endangered species, and (3) strategic placement such as to enhance habitat connectivity. Currently there have been few attempts to use nest boxes to manage arboreal marsupials but further research is needed to realise their potential as a management tool.

ABSTRACT A total of 783 dietary items from a Sooty Owl Tyto tenebricosa tenebricosa with suspected partial xanthochromism (yellow plumage colouration) was identified from Yarrangobilly Caves, NSW. Observations of the owl at the cave and collection of feathers suggest that prey items accumulated between 2011 and 2018. A total of 12 mammal species was detected in the diet, with the Bush Rat Rattus fuscipes, Agile Antechinus Antechinus agilis, Sugar Glider Petaurus breviceps and Rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus dominating. The diet also included three threatened species, the Eastern Pygmy Possum Cercartetus nanus, Smoky Mouse Pseudomys fumeus and Broad-toothed Rat Mastacomys fuscus. The diversity of prey identified in the diet contrasts markedly with that found in studies of subfossil deposits from the area, supporting evidence of extensive mammal declines since European settlement.
