Active and exchangeable cations in soils

The amounts of cations, Ca, Mg, K and Na, that could be extracted from soils by salt solutions varied with the cations, anions, acidity or alkalinity, and solvent of the extracting reagent. The variations were largest for soils that contained organic matter as the main source of those cations, and smallest in clay soils with little organic content. Calcium was the cation most affected and sodium the least affected. It appeared that the extractants removed all diffuse double-layer exchangeable cations, and variable portions of the other active cations including inner-sphere cations, specifically adsorbed cations, and those chelated by organic materials. A moderate, non-specific extractant containing a quaternary ammonium salt, choline chloride, is recommended for the displacement of exchangeable cations with a minimum contribution from other active cations. For an estimate of all forms of active cations, e.g. for soil nutrient assessment, a solution of ammonium sulfate is suggested.

Clay subsoils were analysed by a procedure that uses a choline chloride reagent to distinguish double-layer exchangeable cations from other more strongly adsorbed forms extractable by an ammonium sulfate reagent. In those clay subsoils that contained little organic matter, the exchangeable cations made up nearly all of the cations that reacted with salt solutions. This means that it makes no practical difference to values of Ca/Mg ratios, or of ESP, whether the analytical methods discriminate between those exchangeable cations and other adsorbed cations, or do not, provided the soil samples contain little organic matter. The adoption of the new choline chloride method will not make necessary any revision of the criteria already in use in Australia for sodium- or magnesium-affected subsoils. Some possible mechanisms for the deleterious effect that large amounts of exchangeable magnesium have on the properties of subsoil clays containing illite are discussed. It is shown that the single-charged cations MgCl+ or MgOH+ are not involved. The clays hold exchangeable magnesium slightly less strongly than they hold calcium, and this weaker binding remains the best explanation for the magnesium effect.

Abstract A pine-hardwood sawtimber stand in southeast Texas was clearcut in September 1972. Random plots were burned, chopped, KG-bladed, or left untreated. In the spring of 1974, 1-0 loblolly pine seedlings (Pinus taeda L.) were handplanted at 8 by 10 foot spacing. Data from soil samples, taken from the 0-5 inch depth before clearcutting and 1, 3, and 5 years after site preparation showed that burning appeared to have changed soil nutrient levels the least. Of the two mechanical treatments, KG-blading altered the chemical composition of the soil most, probably because topsoil organic matter was removed. Planted pines survived and grew best on mechanically prepared areas, producing 1.5 to 3.3 times more cubic-foot volume per acre than either of the other treatments by the end of the eighth year.


The name Cladothrix dichotoma was first applied to this organism by Cohn in 1873. In 1875 he also founded the genus Streptothrix to include an organism ( S. Foersteri ) which differed from Cladothrix mainly in the possession of a mycelial habit. In 1887 the genus Actinomyces was also instituted by the same writer, to include the newly discovered A. bovis . Whatever may be the value of the distinction made by Cohn between Streptothrix and Actinomyces , there is no doubt whatever about the clearness of the line of separation which he set up between these genera and Cladothrix . Unfortunately, later writers have used the term Cladothrix to indicate not only the only organism belonging to the group, but also species belonging to Streptothrix . As examples may be mentioned the organism described by Cienkowski (3) in 1877, which he describes as having a branched mycelial habit. The same mistake was made by W inter (21) in 1884. Influenced, doubtless, by these descriptions, Macé (14) in 1884 denied the separate identity of Streptothrix and Cladothrix . In his work he describes the characteristics of Streptothrix , and gives, under this name, precisely those defined by Cohn as belonging to the genus Streptothrix . The confusion by this time had become fixed, and we find the same mistake in later writers. Thus Günther and Rullmann (10), in 1896, describe as Cladothrix odorifera what is obviously a Streptothrix . Again, Acosta and y Grande Rossi (1) describe as Cladothrix invulnerabilis an organism with a branched mycelium and “ aërial hyphal threads.” The same indubitable characteristics of Streptothrix are to be found in Eppinger’s (5) Cladothrix asterioides , and in Hesse’s (2) and Garten’s (9) Cladothrix liquefaciens , likewise in the organism described as Cladothrix by B. Fischer (7), Kedzior (13), Naunym (16), Tchierchke (19), and Flügge (8). Some investigators had avoided this mistake. The first, since Cohn, was Zopf (22), whose masterly treatise, despite small errors in detail, contains the best morphological account of Cladothrix dichotoma which has yet been published. We are also indebted to Büsgen (2) and to Hoeflich (12) for several valuable additions to our knowledge of this organism, and particularly because their observations were taken from pure artificial cultures. To Büsgen belongs the credit of being the first to obtain a pure culture of this species, while the fullness of Hoeflich’s account of growth in artificial media leaves nothing to be desired. On the other hand, the researches of Sauvageau and Radais (18) have put our knowledge of the genus Streptothrix on a firm basis. We know now that the two groups are, phylogenetically, very far apart, and that, with one exception, Cladothrix dichotoma stands alone in the group Cladothricaceæ. This exception is Cladothrix natans ; the inclusion of this organism and Cladothrix dichotoma into a single group (called Sphærotilus) by Migula (15) is a step the wisdom of which is very questionable. Distribution .— Cladothrix dichotoma was described by Zopf as the “Wasserpilz par excellence,” on account of its very wide distribution. He referred more particularly to the neighbourhood of Berlin. In the neighbourhood of Glasgow the organism does not thrive particularly well. In waters with a high organic content the predominant place is held by one or more species of the lower bacteria, or one of the higher fungi. In two places only was a predominant growth of Cladothrix dichotoma found in waters containing organic matter in solution. From one of these, a ferruginous stream running close to Possil Marsh, near Glasgow, the whole of the present observations were taken. The water which forms this stream is collected from a neighbouring cemetery that is situated on a slight eminence. This accounts for the comparatively high amount of organic matter in solution in this water.

Endo-D-galacturonanase of Aspergillus sp. was irreversibly adsorbed on polyethyleneterephthalate in an acetate 0.1 mol l-1 buffer solution of pH 4.2. Immobilization of the enzyme resulted in lowering of its activity, the measure of which depended on the amount of the enzyme fixed on the carrier. The highest relative activity (42.4%) had the preparation containing 5.25 mg of the enzyme per 1 g of the carrier. The velocity and intensity of the sorption of the enzyme depended on the ionic strength of the medium, whilst pH, on the other hand, was of no influence. Endo-D-galacturonanase immobilized in a 0.1 mol l-1 buffer was characteristic a) of its fixation strength in salt solutions of various ionic strength and pH, in a 3 mol l-1 guanidine solution, and also in sodium pectate and pectin solutions, b) of its high stability during a long-lasting storage at 4 °C, c) of its operational stability. The immobilization led to a partial change of the action pattern onto the high-molecular substrate, manifested in lowering the decrease of viscosity to degradation degree ratio.

Soil nutrients are essential nutrients provided by soil for plant growth. Most researchers focus on the coupling effect of nutrients with potato yield and quality. There are few studies on the evaluation of soil nutrients in potato fields. The purpose of this study is to investigate the soil nutrients of potato farmland and the soil vertical nutrient distributions, and then to provide a theoretical and experimental basis for the fertilizer management practices for potatoes in Loess Plateau. Eight physical and chemical soil indexes were selected in the study area, and 810 farmland soil samples from the potato agriculture product areas were analyzed in Northern Shaanxi. The paper established the minimum data set (MDS) for the quality diagnosis of the cultivated layer for farmland by principal component analysis (PCA), respectively, and furthermore, analyzed the soil nutrient characteristics of the cultivated layer adopted soil quality index (SQI). The results showed that the MDS on soil quality diagnosis of the cultivated layer for farmland soil included such indicators as the soil organic matter content, soil available potassium content, and soil available phosphorus content. The comprehensive index value of the soil quality was between 0.064 and 0.302. The SPSS average clustering process used to classify SQI was divided into three grades: class I (36.2%) was defined as suitable soil fertility (SQI < 0.122), class II (55.6%) was defined as moderate soil fertility (0.122 < SQI < 0.18), and class III (8.2%) was defined as poor soil fertility (SQI > 0.186). The comprehensive quality of the potato farmland soils was generally low. The proportion of soil nutrients in the SQI composition ranged from large to small as the soil available potassium content = soil available phosphorus content > soil organic matter content, which became the limiting factor of the soil organic matter content in this area. This study revolves around the 0 to 60 cm soil layer; the soil fertility decreased gradually with the soil depth, and had significant differences between the respective soil layers. In order to improve the soil nutrient accumulation and potato yield in potato farmland in northern Shaanxi, it is suggested to increase the fertilization depth (20 to 40 cm) and further study the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer.

Numbers of ectomycorrhizae were assessed 3 years after harvesting approximately 50% of the overstory in two Douglas-fir-larch stands in western Montana, one was subjected to intensive residue removal, the other broadcast burned 1 year after harvest. Numbers of active ectomycorrhizal root tips were significantly reduced in the broadcast burned stand compared to either the intensively utilized stand or to an adjacent, undisturbed stand. This indicates that on difficult-to-regenerate sites, particularly where soil organic matter is low, it may be advantageous to dispose of slash created in partial cuts by means other than burning.

In the last three decades, exotic tree species are being introduced in the natural pastures of the highlands located at the northeastern part of Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Brazil. This alteration of land use may impart drastic changes in the soil attributes. In this context, this work aimed to evaluate the impact of Pinus taeda afforestation on soil chemical attributes and organic matter (SOM) composition in Leptosols from Campos de Cima da Serra, RS. Soil samples under eight year old (Pi8) and 30 year old (Pi30) Pinus plantations and under native pasture (NP) were studied. Contents of exchangeable cations and of micronutrients and soil pH were determined. The SOM composition was investigated by means of elemental analyses and FTIR spectroscopy. The soil under pasture had a higher content of nutrients and of SOM in comparison to Pinus soils, reflecting the higher input and decomposition rate of the below ground added residue in the grassland environment. The SOM in pasture soils showed a higher content of carbohydrate and of structures derived from microbial metabolism. Besides the depletion of nutrients and of SOM, Pinus afforestation affected the SOM quality: following afforestation, the proportion of chemically recalcitrant structures and of carboxylic groups increased, whereas N-containing groups decreased.

The present study aim to estimate the ratio of aquaculture in the phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations determined in the Toho - Todougba lagoons. For this purpose, the two lagoons were subdivided into 7 stations for the determination of phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations in the water column. Production data from 2017 to 2019 were collected from the Direction of the Ficheries Production and from the literature. Data for 2020 were collected directly from fish farmers. Annual tilapia production was estimated by year and the amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen released from aquaculture are deduced based on the ratio of Montanhini Neto & Ostrensky (2013). The concentration of each of these nutrients was estimated by station and compared to the concentration determined by laboratory analysis of the water. This methodology shows that the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen released to the environment varies from 0.49 mg/L to 0.18 mg/L for phosphorus and from 1.53 mg/L to 0.58 mg/L for nitrogen. The lowest values are obtained in 2020 and differ significantly from the other years (p <0.05). The quantity of phosphorus discharged is higher at the high production stations (Tonon 0.20 mg/L and Lokohoue 0.11 mg/L). Some of this is stored in the sediment. The nitrogen generated by aquaculture is significantly lower than the average determined in water (p <0.05). However, the concentration determined is still related to the amount of organic matter released due to aquaculture. Although aquaculture is not the only source of nutrient release to water, strategies for aquaculture with less nutrient release should be determined.

This experiment is about the evaluation of characteristic alteration of soil nutrients after ten years at tropical rain forest Bukit Gajabuih Gunung Gadut Padang. This experiment was conducted from November 2006 - April 2007.  This experiment is arranged based on anova design with three treatments which was based on three great groups of land ( oxic-dystroudept (eutriccc, aquic), oxic-dystroudept (xanthic), oxic-typic-dystroudept (xanthic)).  The purpose of this experiment was to study the alteration of soil fertility characteristics  (K, Ca, Mg, Na, P and C/N) in ten years period (1995-2005) in tropical rain forest at Bukit Gajabuih Padang, to observe vegetation variety alteration, and the relationship with the land fertility characteristics.  From the experiment was found that nutrient status of the soils altered after ten years (*1995-2005).  Available P content increased about 77%, exchangeable Na and K  increased 86,04% and 53.65%, respectively.  On the other hand, exchangeable Mg and Ca decreased 3,05% and 65,88%, respectively.  Land C/N ratio decreased about 21,39%. The nverine supply of suspended inorganic and organic sediment, its temporal and spatial distribution and its exchange with the bay, were estimated for an urban estuary (Aarhus Harbour Estuary, Denmark) during 1983-84. The river supplies high levels of particulate matter to the estuary. Export from the estuary averages one fifth of the river introduced particulate matter resulting in the accumulation of terrigenous material in the estuary. River discharge determines whether the high depletion of particulate matter in the upper estuary follows an exponential(flocculation) or a lineary curve (dilution). Preferential deposition of organic as opposed to inorganic matter in the upper estuary depletes the particulate matter of organic matter and associated pollutants. The estuary is divided into three depositional zones identified on the basis of sediment activity, grain-size and organic content. A sediment budget is precented for the estuary. Good agreement is shown between the actually dredged sediment quantity and the mass to sedimentation from the budget.
