Drought Tolerance and Avoidance in the Localised and Endemic Leptospermum grandiflorum and Co-occurring Species

A physiological case study of the genus Leptospermum is used to highlight the importance of the historical effects of the dry Last Glacial (30 000–15 000 BP) on current plant distributions in Tasmania. The water relations of the endemic L. grandiforum Lodd., which has a restricted distribution, is contrasted with three widespread taxa of this genus. The results suggest that L. grandiflorum is better suited for survival in dry areas, to which its distribution is restricted, than the more widespread species. Leptospermum grandiflorum is also shown to have a slower growth rate under moist conditions than the widespread taxa, which perhaps explains its apparent lack of dispersal during the moister interglacial. Thus, historical factors are likely to be the cause of the restricted distribution of this localised endemic to small areas of the east coast of Tasmania.

AbstractHistorians have not paid close attention to the activities of freebooters operating out of Dunkirk in the late 1620s. This essay corrects that omission by first studying the threat from Dunkirk to England's east coast and then addressing how the central government, counties, and coastal towns responded. A surprisingly rich vein of manuscript material from Great Yarmouth and particularly from the Suffolk fishing community of Aldeburgh informs this case study of the impact of this conflict around the North Sea.

Abstract This paper presents a methodology for the probabilistic analysis of an infill or step-out opportunity using numerical simulation. Sensitivity and uncertainty analyses for all involved parameters were evaluated through different experimental design techniques. Subsequently, a proxy model was established to reproduce the numerical model performance. Finally, three appropriate solutions were selected from a large population of realizations corresponding to probabilistic percentiles (90%, 50%, and 10% certainty that the specified volume will be recovered). This proposed methodology helped the asset team to evaluate the well candidates more precisely, confidently, and in less time than the current standard methodology. More knowledge about the variables and their effects on overall outcomes was also gained, which helped the team make more-informed decisions. The workflow used the same numerical modeling software, incorporating and facilitating the changes of both static and dynamic properties simultaneously. A case study from Teak field, on the east coast of Trinidad, illustrates the applicability of the methodology and compares its results to those obtained using the standard workflow for the asset. The methodology is one of the latest developments in reservoir simulation, and it has not yet been incorporated into the operator's common practices and procedures for exploitation of the TSP fields.

This study analyzes oil palm production from 2001 - 2008 in Edo State, with a view of establishing the future of Nigerian Agricultural oil palm industries. The specific objectives were to identify and quantify the factors influencing the production of oil palm, reveal the constraints to the production of oil palm; analyze the viability of oil palm production as an investment and predict the future of oil palm enterprise in Edo State. Three Local Government Areas of high oil palm concentration in Edo State were covered. Ninety selected oil palm producers from nine villages in the study area were selected. Frequency distributions and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the results. The results showed that for the period under review (2001 - 2008) on a per hectare basis, seedlings cost, and labour cost were significant inputs, positively influencing the production of oil palm in the Edo State. A growth rate of 6.2% and 23.5% were projected for oil palm with reference to palm oil and fresh fruit bunches (FFB), respectively, up to the year 2020, an indication that oil palm production in the State is viable and the future is bright. The study revealed that inadequate storage facilities, poor planting materials and lack of government assistance, among others, are major bottlenecks in oil palm production in Edo State. However, since oil palm production in Edo State is viable, it is an indication that the future of Nigerian Agricultural Industries is bright.

The physiological and morphological responses to water stress induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG) or by withholding water were investigated in Aegilops biuncialis Vis. genotypes differing in the annual rainfall of their habitat (1050, 550 and 225 mm year–1) and in Triticum aestivum L. wheat genotypes differing in drought tolerance. A decrease in the osmotic pressure of the nutrient solution from –0.027 to –1.8 MPa resulted in significant water loss, a low degree of stomatal closure and a decrease in the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) in Aegilops genotypes originating from dry habitats, while in wheat genotypes high osmotic stress increased stomatal closure, resulting in a low level of water loss and high Ci. Nevertheless, under saturating light at normal atmospheric CO2 levels, the rate of CO2 assimilation was higher for the Aegilops accessions, under high osmotic stress, than for the wheat genotypes. Moreover, in the wheat genotypes CO2 assimilation exhibited less or no O2 sensitivity. These physiological responses were manifested in changes in the growth rate and biomass production, since Aegilops (Ae550, Ae225) genotypes retained a higher growth rate (especially in the roots), biomass production and yield formation after drought stress than wheat. These results indicate that Aegilops genotypes, originating from a dry habitat have better drought tolerance than wheat, making them good candidates for improving the drought tolerance of wheat through intergeneric crossing.
