Oligocene leaves, fruit and flowers of the Cunoniaceae from Cethana, Tasmania

At least five species in five genera from the Cunoniaceae occur in the Oligocene Cethana deposit. A Callicoma leaf and infructescence are indistinguishable from those of C. serratifolia, the only extant species, and are therefore assigned to that species. Schizonzeria tasmaniensis sp. nov. and Acsmithia grandiflora sp. nov. are represented by flowers and Vesselowskya aff. rubifolia by a leaf or leaflet. Compound leaves of Weinmailrlia/Cunonia so far collected lack cuticular preservation, but their distinctive morphology enables confident placement in this group. Since these genera are only segregable on reproductive features a new genus, Weinmanniaphyllum, is proposed. The fossil data confirm that eastern Australia has been a centre of diversity for the family since at least the Early Tertiary. Modem representatives of the fossil taxa now occur in New South Wales, Queensland, New Guinea, Pacific Islands and South and Central America. None occurs in Tasmania. The evidence is further support for the presence of floristically diverse, microthermal rainforests and disturbed oligotrophic habitats in the Early Tertiary of Tasmania.

Proteaceous leaves from two Early Tertiary sites in Tasmania are described and discussed. Based on gross leaf morphological and cuticular characters, 15 species are recognised from Oligocene lacustrine sediments at Cethana. Specimens of two taxa are not distinguishable from the extant species Telopea truncata from Tasmania and Lomatia fraxinifolia from north-eastern Queensland, and are therefore assigned to these species. Two new species of Banksieaephyllum are recognised. Ten other taxa are difficult to identify to existing genera, and are therefore referred to a new genus Proteaciphyllum. They all possess features typical of subfamily Grevilleoideae. Other, less well preserved, but probable Proteaceae from Cethana are also described. Specimens from the Leven River deposit, probably also of Oligocene age, are assigned to a new species of Orites, O. excelsoides. This species is closely related to extant O. excelsa from rainforests of north-eastern New South Wales and north-eastern Queensland. Cethana has by far the highest diversity of Proteaceae of any fossil flora described to date. The fossils also demonstrate the past association of now geographically remote taxa, and the prevalence of sclero- and xero-morphy in the family by the Oligocene.

The stiletto fly subfamily Agapophytinae is diverse and species rich in Australasia, with numerous undescribed species. A new species of Acraspisoides Hill & Winterton, A. monticola sp. nov., is described from females collected in montane localities in eastern Australia. Eight new species of Bonjeania Irwin & Lyneborg are also described, raising the total number of known species to 18. Five new species, B. affinis sp. nov., B. apluda sp. nov., B. bapsis sp. nov., B. webbi sp. nov. and B. zwicki sp. nov., all have a distinctive, forward-protruding head with antennae on a raised tubercle. Two other new species, B. argentea sp. nov. and B. jefferiesi sp. nov., are closely related to B. segnis (White), with very similar shaped male genitalia and body shape. An eighth species, B. lambkinae sp. nov., is closely related to B. clamosis Winterton & Skevington. Bonjeania and Acraspisoides are diagnosed and revised keys to species presented. An unusual new therevid, Vomerina humbug gen. et sp. nov., is also described and figured based on a series of males from New South Wales. This new genus likely represents the sister taxon to Bonjeania.

The discovery of a new genus of Heatherellidae in New Zealand has led us to revise this enigmatic family and its constituent genera. Aheatherella n. gen., based on A. mira n. sp. from the North Island of New Zealand, lacks some of the derived character states that link the Australian Heatherella, most notably the lack of sexual dimorphism in the dorsal shields and in the presence of peritremes in adult Aheatherella. Heatherella osleri n. sp. is described from New South Wales, extending the distribution of this genus beyond Queensland. New collection records of H. callimaulos and a key to the genera and species of the family are provided. We propose that the Heatherellidae—previously placed in its own cohort outside the Gamasina—are best considered a superfamily of gamasine mites within the subcohort Epicriiae.

The marine benthic red algae of the Coffs Harbour region are described and illustrated in detail. The survey constitutes the first ever detailed descriptive and illustrative mainland regional monograph of any area along the entire eastern Australian seaboard. Collections made intertidally and to depths of 20 m have included 119 species in 74 genera, 26 families, and 8 orders of Rhodophyta, of which 54 (45%) were previously unrecorded from eastern Australia, 22 (18%) are new records for the whole of Australia (16 being new Southern Hemisphere records), 1 (Dictyothumnion) constitutes a new genus, and 16 (13%) are new species in the genera Gracilaria, Curdiea, Botryocladia, Dictyothamnion, Antithamnion, Ceramium, Callithumnion, Anotrichium, Nitophyllum, Phycodrys, Apoglossum, Dasya, Fernandosiphonia, and Herposiphonia. Also included are major Australian revisions of the genera Martensia and Nitophyllum, and six new combinations are proposed (Chondria infestans, Curdiea angustata, Dasya pilosa, Haraldiophyllum sinuosum, Myriogramme pulchellum, and Stenograrnme phyllophoroides). The Coffs Harbour flora, although related to the north-eastern and, to a lesser degree, southern Australian floras, has a number of species previously known only from much more remote localities, such as Japan (6 species), California (4 species), New Zealand (3 species), India (2 species), South America (2 species), the Galapagos Islands (1 species), China (1 species), South Africa (1 species), and the Mediterranean (1 species). Twelve of the 22 species newly recorded for Australia show a definite western Pacific distribution, a region with which the overall Coffs Harbour flora has strong affinities.

Eastern Australia has two major Mesozoic fossil localities. The Talbragar Fish Bed in central west New South Wales contains an assemblage of Upper Jurassic fishes, plants and insects. The Koonwarra Fossil Bed, in South Gippsland, Victoria, has an assemblage of Lower Cretaceous fishes, plants and insects. The geological settings of these localities are described. Each locality has a common genus of fish that was originally described as Leptolepis. The names of both these fish have been changed, the Talbragar one to Cavenderichthys talbragarensis and the Koonwarra one to Waldmanichthys koonwarri. Both of these fish have been placed into the Family Luisiellidae, together with a Patagonian fish, Luisiella feruglioi. Each locality also has a member of the family Archaeomenidae: Archaeomene tenuis from Talbragar and Wadeichthys oxyops from Koonwarra. The relationships of these and other fish have been discussed by various authors over the last 20 years and a summary of these comments is presented, as well as a brief comparison between the plants of both localities. The localities of Talbragar, Koonwarra and the Argentinian fishes during the Mesozoic appear to have similar palaeo-environmental settings, which may explain the similarities in the assemblages. The Australian localities contain well-preserved specimens which shed light on the diversity and extent of fishes in southern Gondwana, a region otherwise poorly represented in the fossil record.

The genus Omma Newman (type species Omma stanleyi Newman) is revised and redefined based on extant species, with examination of additional fossil species. As a result, only the species O. stanleyi Newman is retained in Omma and a new genus, Beutelius gen. nov. (type species Omma mastersi MacLeay), is described to accommodate the remaining Australian species: B. mastersi (MacLeay), comb. nov., B. sagitta (Neboiss), comb. nov. and B. rutherfordi (Lawrence), comb. nov. A new species, Beutelius reidi sp. nov., is described from Melville Range Nature Reserve in New South Wales, Australia. Diagnoses and new records for extant Ommatinae, including the male of B. sagitta and female of B. mastersi, are provided, as well as a key to extant genera and species.

Although the Indo-Pacific is the global centre of diversity for the heterobranch sea slugs, their distribution remains, in many places, largely unknown. On the Australian east coast, their diversity decreases from approximately 1000 species in the northern Great Barrier Reef to fewer than 400 in Bass Strait. While occurrence records for some of the more populated sections of the coast are well known, data are patchy for more remote areas. Many species have very short lifecycles, so they can respond rapidly to changes in environmental conditions. The New South Wales coast is a recognised climate change hot-spot and southward shifts in distribution have already been documented for several species. However, thorough documentation of present distributions is an essential prerequisite for identifying further range extensions. While distribution data are available in the public realm, much is also held privately as photographic collections, diaries and logs. This paper consolidates the current occurrence data from both private and public sources as part of a broader study of sea slug distribution in south-eastern Australia and provides an inventory by region. A total of 382 species, 155 genera and 54 families is reported from the mainland coast of New South Wales.

We propose a new genus of licneremaeoid oribatid mite, Phylleremus, based on two new species collected from leaves of woody dicots in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, Australia. Description of the type species, Phylleremus leei n. sp., is based on adults and all active immature stages; that of Phylleremus hunti n. sp. is based on adults and tritonymphs. Phylleremus adults have the notogastral octotaxic system of dermal glands developed either as 1 or 4 pairs of saccules, and nymphs are bideficient and plicate. We discuss the characteristics and relationships of this genus to others in Licneremaeoidea and argue for an affiliation with Adhaesozetidae.

Luriculus australiensis, gen. et sp, nov., from a sandy, exposed ocean beach at Arrawarra Headland, north of Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia, is described on the basis of light and electron microscopic investigations. The establishment of the new genus Luriculus is based on the presence of germovitellaria, rather than discrete organs. Lurus castor Sterrer & Rieger, 1990, Lurus tyndareus Sterrer & Rieger, 1990, and Lurus minos Sterrer, 1992, are transferred to this genus.

AbstractA new genus of Monoscutidae (Arachnida: Opiliones), Australiscutum, containing three new species, A. hunti (type species), A. graciliforceps and A. triplodaemon, is described from Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Australiscutum triplodaemon differs from all other Opiliones described to date in possessing noticeably asymmetrical chelicerae, with the right chelicera much larger than the left.
