Leaves of Eucryphia (Eucryphiaceae) from tertiary sediments in south-eastern Australia

Eucryphia leaves recovered from Tertiary sediments in south-eastern Australia are assigned to three new species, E. falcata (Late Palaeocene, Lake Bungarby), E. microstoma (Early Eocene, Regatta Point) and E. aberensis (Middle to Late Eocene, Loch Aber). Leaves from Early Pleistocene sediments at Regatta Point are re-examined and are considered to be closely related to the extant species, E. lucida and E. milliganii. An examination of the leaf morphology of the fossil and extant species suggests that evolution has taken place, resulting in smaller leaves at higher latitudes and/or altitudes probably in response to climatic change. There is also evidence for an increase in the size and complexity of peltiform cuticular extensions on the abaxial leaf surface from the Early Tertiary to the present, which may be a response to lower water availability or increasing occurrence of frost.

A re-investigation of macrofossils previously referred to the extantpodocarpaceous genus Falcatifolium Laubenfels shows thatno records can be sustained. Falcatifolium australisD.R.Greenwood from Middle Eocene sediments in Victoria bears littleresemblance to extant species in the genus and is transferred to the newfossil genus Sigmaphyllum R.S.Hill & L.J.Scriven.Specimens from Early Oligocene sediments in Tasmania previously assigned toFalcatifolium are described as a second species ofSigmaphyllum, S. tasmanensisR.S.Hill & L.J.Scriven, and specimens from mid to late Eocene sediments inTasmania previously assigned to Falcatifolium do notbelong to that genus, although their true generic affinities are uncertain.Dispersed cuticle specimens from Late Eocene–Oligocene sediments inSouth Australia referred to Falcatifolium are notreliable records of the genus and require further investigation. However,Dacrycarpus eocenica D.R.Greenwood, from Middle Eocenesediments in Victoria is transferred to Falcatifolium,and is similar to the extant species F. angustumLaubenfels, which has a leaf morphology unusual for the genus.Falcatifolium eocenica (D.R.Greenwood) R.S.Hill & L.J.Scriven is the only reliable record of the genus in the Australian fossilrecord to date.

Three new species of Fergusonina (Diptera: Fergusoninidae) flies are described from terminal leaf bud galls on Eucalyptus L'Hér. from south eastern Australia. Fergusonina omlandi Nelson and Yeates sp. nov. is the first species of fly from the genus Fergusonina to be described from the Eucalyptus pauciflora Sieb. ex Spreng. (Snow Gum) species complex; although another two species occur in sympatry on this host at higher elevations. Fergusonina omlandi sp. nov. can be distinguished from the latter by differences in adult size and markings on the mesonotum and morphology of the dorsal shield of the larva. The other new species, Fergusonina williamensis Nelson and Yeates sp. nov. and Fergusonina thornhilli Nelson and Yeates sp. nov. are the first flies to be described from Eucalyptus baxteri (Benth.) Maiden & Blakely and Eucalyptus dalrympleana Maiden, respectively. These two species can be distinguished from all other described Fergusonina by host specificity, adult colour and setation and morphology of the dorsal shield.

Correa lawrenceana Hook. is a widespread species in south-eastern Australia with eight recognised varieties. The Tasmanian variety, var. lawrenceana, is morphologically diverse. The present study uses multivariate morphometrics, including cluster, ordination and canonical discriminant analyses of samples of all recognised varieties of C. lawrenceana to assess whether more than one Tasmanian form warrants taxonomic recognition. These analyses showed that (1) var. lawrenceana can be divided into two well discriminated groups that are both endemic to Tasmania, a glabrescent form from the north-east and a hirsute form from the western, central and south-eastern regions, (2) the glabrescent form matches the type of C. lawrenceana and thus retains the name var. lawrenceana, and the hirsute form matches the type of C. lawrenceana var. ferruginea Hook.f. that is reinstated. The two varieties are separated geographically except in a small area around Deloraine in the north where intermediate morphological forms occur. The density of trichomes on the abaxial leaf surface is important for distinguishing the two Tasmanian varieties. An updated key to all varieties of C. lawrenceana along with descriptions of the Tasmanian varieties is presented. Nomenclature of the Tasmanian taxa is discussed and C. lawrenceana, C. lawrenceana var. glabra Benth., C. lawrenceana var. glabra L.Rodway and C. ferruginea Gunn ex Hook. are lectotypified.

Three new species of Celmisia (C. tomentella, C. pugioniformis and C. costiniana) from mainland south-eastern Australia are described, and a new combination (C. latifolia) is made for an endemic species from Victoria.
