A systematic revision of the mangrove genus Avicennia (Avicenniaceae) in Australasia*

In Australasia (including Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and other islands in the south-western Pacific) the mangrove genus Avicennia L. consists of five species: A. alba Bl., A. integra N. C. Duke, A. marina (Forsk.) Vierh., A. oficinalis L. and A. rumphiana Hallier f. Based on morphological characters and supported by allele patterns in isozyme studies (reported elsewhere), A. marina is divided into three varieties. Keys, descriptions, brief synonymy, descriptive figures and distribution maps are provided for each of the seven taxa.* Aust. Inst. Marine Sci. Contrib. No. 520.

This paper gives a systematic revision of feather mites of the genera Dubininia Vassilev, 1958 and Cacatualges Dabert, Badek and Skoracki, 2007 (Xolalgidae: Ingrassiinae) associated with parrots (Aves: Psittaciformes) of the Old World. Five new species are described: Cacatualges probosciger sp. n. from Probosciger aterrimus (Gmelin) (Cacatuidae) from New Guinea, Dubininia charmosynae sp. n. from Charmosyna pulchella Gray GR (Psittaculidae) from New Guinea, D. micropsittae sp. n. from Micropsitta pusio pusio (Scaltter) (Psittaculidae) from New Guinea, D. nestori sp. n. from Nestor notabilis Gould (Strigopidae) from New Zealand, and D. pezopori sp. n. from Pezoporus wallicus (Kerr) (Psittaculidae) from Tasmania, Australia. Four previously described species of Dubininia are redescribed based on material from type hosts: D. curta (Trouessart, 1885) from Platycercus elegans (Gmelin) (Psittaculidae), D. lorina (Trouessart, 1885) from Lorius domicella (Linnaeus) (Psittaculidae), D. melopsittaci Atyeo and Gaud, 1987 from Melopsittacus undulatus (Shaw) (Psittaculidae), and D. psittacina (Trouessart, 1885) from Strigops harboptilus Gray GR (Strigopidae) from New Zealand. A new diagnosis for the genus Dubininia is provided. A key to all presently known Dubininia species is provided for the first time.

The munnopsidid genus Notopais Hodgson, 1910 is taken out of synonymy with Echinozone Sars, 1897. The type species Notopais spicata Hodgson, 1910 and Notopais quadrispinosa (Beddard, 1886) are redescribed and three new species described: Notopais beddardi n. sp. collected from Antarctica at a depth of less than 37 metres; Notopais minya n. sp. collected from the south-eastern Australian continental slope between the depths of 429 466 metres; and Notopais zealandica n. sp. collected from the Chatham Rise between the depths of 1386 1640 metres, off the south-eastern New Zealand coast. Notopais is distinguished from Echinozone by three defining characters: the flattened appearance of the ventral side of the cephalon, the presence of pedestal setae on the pereonites and antenna 2 article 1 with produced distolateral angle with prominent spine and distal robust seta. This genus is exclusively found in the Southern Hemisphere and is known from Antarctica and the south-western Pacific.

The Australian species of two genera, Nothorhaphium, gen. nov. andSyntormon Loew (Diptera : Dolichopodidae), are described, illustrated and keyed, and discussed in context of the Western Pacific fauna. The two genera are phylogenetically close. The Australian Nothorhaphium comprises four species: N. aemulans Becker, comb. nov. (= Xiphandrium pudicum Parent, syn. nov.), N. nudicorne, sp. nov., N. callosum, sp. nov., and N. curalo, sp. nov. The montane New Guinean N. oro, sp. nov. is also described, and its close relationship with the predominantly southern temperate Australian fauna is discussed, suggesting it was part of a common Australian fauna which became isolated with the uplift of New Guinea in the mid–late Tertiary. The Australian Syntormon comprises six species: S. xiphandroides Parent, S. flexibile Becker, S. singularis, sp. nov., S. tasmanense, sp. nov., S. janelithae, sp. nov., and S. lucare, sp. nov. As well, S. aotearoa is described from New Zealand. Genera once thought to be close to Syntormon are discussed. The subfamily Rhaphiinae is briefly discussed, noting the problem of subfamily definition. The New Zealand Syntormon formosus Parent is placed in new combination [= Dactylonotus formosus (Parent)] in a genus previously known only from southern Africa.

Aspleniaceae is one of the largest fern families. It is species-rich in Australasia and the south-western Pacific (ASWP), where approximately 115 species occur. In the current study, the chloroplast regions rbcL, trnL–trnF and rps4–trnS were sequenced for 100 Aspleniaceae samples from ASWP. These data were combined with published sequences for species from New Zealand and other regions for phylogenetic analyses. Species of Aspleniaceae from ASWP were placed in six of the eight previously identified inter-continental clades. The majority of species from ASWP were placed in two of these clades, with the remaining four clades each being represented by three or fewer species. Strong biogeographic affinities with South-east Asia were observed and immigration, rather than local radiations of endemic taxa, appears to have made a more important contribution to patterns of diversity in ASWP. This study supports the current taxonomic practice of recognising two genera, Asplenium L. and Hymenasplenium Hayata, in Aspleniaceae, and identifies future taxonomic work required for the family in this region, including potential synonymising of species, and revision of species complexes or widespread species that are demonstrably non-monophyletic.

Ptychoptera castor Keresztes & Klappert, sp. nov. and P. pollux Keresztes & Török, sp. nov. both belong to the subgenus Ptychoptera (Paraptychoptera)Tonnoir (1919) and are described from boggy headwaters in the south Balkan area. These new species are closely related to the range-restricted P. helena Peus, 1958, which is known only from Oiti village, Mount Oeta, Phthioitis region, Greece and, together with P. lacustris, forms a morphologically well-defined unit in the subgenus Paraptychoptera. Based on cladistic analyses of 53 different morphological characters using the male antenna, wing, and genital structures, a general revision of the “lacustris” group is proposed with a dichotomous key of Paraptychoptera species.

The Australian genus Theprisa Moore, 1963, is taxonomically revised to comprise five species, two newly described: Theprisa darlingtoni Liebherr & Porch, sp. nov. of Tasmania, and Theprisa otway Liebherr, Porch & Maddison, sp. nov. from the Otway Ranges, Victoria. Two previously described species, T. australis (Castelnau) and T. montana (Castelnau), are distributed in the mountains of Victoria. The third previously described species, T. convexa (Sloane) is found in Tasmania. A lectotype is designated for T. convexa because the various syntypes are ambiguously labelled. Cladistic analysis based on morphological characters establishes monophyly of Theprisa relative to the Australian genera Sitaphe Moore and Spherita Liebherr. This and a second clade of Australian genera (Pterogmus Sloane, Thayerella Baehr, and Neonomius Moore) do not form a natural group, but are cladistically interdigitated among two monophyletic New Zealand lineages (Tarastethus Sharp, and Trichopsida Larochelle and Larivière) suggesting substantial trans-Tasman diversification among these groups. Hypothesized relationships within Theprisa are consistent with two bouts of speciation involving the Bass Strait; an initial event establishing T. convexa as adelphotaxon to the other four species, and a more recent event establishing the sister species T. darlingtoni and T. montana. Geographic restriction of T. otway to the Otway Ranges is paralleled by Otway endemics in several other carabid beetle genera, as well as by endemics in numerous other terrestrial arthropod taxa. Whereas these numerous Otway endemics support the distinctive nature of the Otway Range fauna, their biogeographic relationships are extremely varied, illustrating that the Otways have accrued their distinctive biodiversity via various means.
