A new species of stringybark, Eucalyptus mackintii, from eastern Victoria and its phenetic and cladistic relationships

Populations of stringybark trees from East Gippsland, with affinities to Eucalyptus macrorhyncha, were studied by pattern analyses of adult and seedling morphology, leaf volatile oils and flavonoid composition. They had previously been determined as hybrids, or as referable to an undescribed taxon. Samples of E. deuaensis, E. globoidea, E. macrorhyncha and E. muelleriana were included to assess the affinities of E. aff. macrorhyncha to other stringybark taxa. No evidence was found to support a hybrid origin of E. aff. macrorhyncha, and it is described as E. mackintii sp. nov. In adult morphology E. mackintii is similar to, but distinct from E. macrorhyncha, whereas in seedling morphology the two are indistinguishable. Two chemical forms of E. mackintii were detected in the leaf volatile oils, both of which have also been reported to occur in E. deuaensis and E. macrorhyncha. The leaf flavonoid composition of the new species is similar to that of E. macrorhyncha, although some differences between the two were observed. The inclusion of E. mackintii in a cladistic analysis of the informal superseries Capitellaticae Ladiges & Humphries resulted in the taxon forming an unresolved basal trichotomy within the infraseries Capitllatae.

A new species of the genus Piestus Gravenhorst is described from Peru, P. chullachaqui sp. nov. (Cuzco). Photographs and drawings of the major diagnostic characters are provided. A key to Piestus species is modified to include the new species. New records are provided for Piestus angularis Fauvel, Piestus bicornis (Olivier), Piestus fronticornis (Dalman), Piestus lacordairei Laporte, Piestus longipennis (Fauvel), Piestus mexicanus Laporte, Piestus minutus Erichson, Piestus pennicornis Fauvel, Piestus spinosus (Fabricius), Piestus sulcatus Gravenhorst, Piestus surrufus Caron et al. and Piestus validus Sharp. Cladistic analysis is made to know the relationship of the P. chullachaqui sp. nov. within Piestus.

A fourth species of Ericaella, E. florezi n. sp., is described based on males and a female from Cauca, Colombia. A cladistic analysis of all known species of Ericaella, plus two outgroup species (Radulphius camacan Bonaldo and Eutichurus luridus Simon) is presented. The single optimal tree obtained depicted a sister group relationship between Ericaella longipes Chickering plus E. florezi sp. n. and E. samiria Bonaldo plus E. kaxinawa Bonaldo.

A cladistic analysis of the genus Melanophora Meigen, 1803 (type-species: Musca grossificationis Linnaeus, 1758 [= Musca roralis Linnaeus, 1758]) is presented and the generic delimitation is critically redefined. The nominal genus-group taxon Bequaertiana Curran, 1929 (type-species: Bequaertiana argyriventris Curran, 1929) is synonymised with Melanophora Meigen syn. nov. The following new combinations are proposed: Melanophora argyriventris (Curran, 1929) comb. nov. and Melanophora basilewskyi (Peris, 1957) comb. nov. Melanophora chia sp. nov. from SW Sardinia is described, illustrated and compared with the other known species of the genus. The male of Melanophora asetosa Kugler, 1978 is described for the first time. Melanophora basilewskyi (Peris, 1957) is recorded from Kenya for the first time.

A new species of the romaleid grasshopper genus Zoniopoda Stål (Romaleidae: Romaleini) is described and illustrated from the Sierras Chicas of Córdoba Province, central Argentina. A cladistic analysis based on morphological characters indicates that the genus Zoniopoda constitutes a monophyletic group and that Zoniopoda serrana n. sp. must be assigned to Iheringi species group based on synapomorphies of the pronotum and body color. The new species is similar to Z. similis Bruner from Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil, from which it can be distinguished by the color pattern of the body, shape of the pronotal dorso-median carina and characters of the male terminalia and epiphallus. This paper has been formatted with embedded links to images of the type specimen, maps based on georeferenced specimen data for the genus and an updated key to the species of Zoniopoda available on the Orthoptera Species File (OSF) online (http://orthoptera.speciesfile.org).

A new species of Tabularia, Tabularia sinensis, is described from the inland Poyang Lake (Jiangxi Province), the largest lake in China. The description is based on light and scanning electron microscope observations of valve and girdle elements. Given the diversity of forms in the genus, the relationships and status of the genus was investigated in the context of the other known species in the genus and to ascertain if Tabularia, as originally circumscribed, remains monophyletic.

A new species, Eucalyptus fusiformis Boland et Kleinig, from the north coast of New South Wales is described. Its taxonomic position is in E. subgenus Symphyomyrtus series Paniculatae following the informal classification of eucalypts proposed by Pryor and Johnson (1971). E. fusiformis is characterised by its flowers, fruits and adult leaves. In the bud the staminal filaments are fully inflected while the androecium has outer staminodes and the anthers are cuboid and adnate. The fruits are narrow, often truncate fusiform, tapering into long slender pedicels. The adult leaves are dull grey, concolorous and hypoamphistomatic. The species resembles the more numerous and often co-occurring ironbark E. siderophloia which has similar adult and seedling leaves. The volatile oils of both species are very similar. The ecology, distribution, taxonomic affinities and conservation status are discussed.

Corotoca is a strictly Neotropical genus of termitophilous beetles associated with termites of genus Constrictotermes. A cladistic analysis based on 13 terminal taxa and 60 characters (57 morphological and three behavioral) was conducted. The exhaustive search with equally weighted characters resulted in two most parsimonious trees with 95 steps. Spirachtha is proposed to be the sister group of the monophyletic “subgroup Corotocae” (Corotoca + Cavifonexus gen. nov.), based on eleven synapomorhphies (ten exclusive and one homoplastic). The monophyly of Corotoca is supported here, including six species associated with Constrictotermes cyphergaster: (Corotoca hitchensi sp. nov + (C. melantho + C. pseudomelantho sp. nov.) + ((C. fontesi + (C. phylo + C. araujoi)). A new genus, Cavifronexus gen. nov., is proposed to two species associated with Constrictotermes cavifrons (Holmgren, 1910): Cavifronexus guyanae comb. nov., from Guyana and Brazil, previously described as Corotoca; and a new species, Cavifronexus papaveroi sp. nov., from Brazil. This work also includes descriptions, redescriptions, and illustrations for all species and genera. Keys for genera and species identification in “subgroup Corotocae” are also provided.
