A new species of Lepidosperma (Cyperaceae) allied to L. congestum of southern Australia

We investigated the limits of Lepidosperma congestum R.Br. and a putative new species of Lepidosperma Labill. from Victoria and South Australia. Phenetic analyses (flexible UPGMA agglomerative hierarchical fusion and semi-strong hybrid multidimensional scaling) were conducted on a dataset derived from morphological characters scored from herbarium material. The results of our analyses supported the recognition of a new species, which we describe here as Lepidosperma hispidulum G.T.Plunkett, J.J.Bruhl & K.L.Wilson. Our results clarified the differences among L. congestum, L. laeve R.Br. and L. hispidulum, the first two of which have often been misidentified. We also discuss the distribution, habitat and conservation status of L. hispidulum.

Scrophularia dianatnejadii Ranjbar & Rahchamani, a new species from Tehran Province in northern Iran, is described and illustrated. It is closely related to S. amplexicaulis Benth. and shares with it some diagnostic morphological characters such as habit, plant indument, phyllotaxy, and corolla shape and color. Both species are placed in Scrophularia L. sect. Mimulopsis Boiss. Macro- and micromorphological characters of the two are examined and compared. Pollen morphology of these species is investigated using SEM. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps, and conservation status of both species are provided.

Stachys ahmet-savranii Doğu & Bağcı sp. nov. (Lamiaceae) from the Niğde (C5 Niğde, Turkey) is described and illustrated. It exhibits general features of the section Infrarosularis. It is closely related to Stachys citrina Boiss. & Heldr. but differs by its slender and unbranched stem; leaves structure; floral leaves equalling or longer than verticillasters; verticillester with 8 - 12 flowered and corolla 10 - 18 mm; Bracteoles reaching nearly middle of calyx tube. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. The geographical distribution of the new species is mapped. Notes are also presented on its ecology, biogeography and conservation status. A peltate-leaved species of Begonia was recently collected from a limestone hill in central Guangxi, China. Based on a careful study of literature, herbarium material, and plants both in the wild and in cultivation reveals that it is a new species of Begonia sect. Coelocentrum, which we hereby describe as B. ufoides. In addition to a full taxonomic account, color plates and line drawings are provided to aid in identification. Begonia ufoides may be confused with B. umbraculifolia Y. Wan & B.N. Chang in southwestern Guangxi and B. phuthoensis H.Q. Nguyen in northern Vietnam, both of which are peltate-leaved calciphilous species in sect. Coelocentrum, but the new species  is clearly distinguishable in many morphological characters. A table comparing salient features of the three species is presented.

Iris ferdowsii is described and illustrated as a new species from Khorassan-Kopet Dagh floristic province in NE Iran. It is closely related to the rhizomatous bearded irises of I. sect. Regelia. The species of this section are distributed mainly in the east of Iran, Afghanistan, west of Pakistan and Middle Asia. Diagnostic morphological characters, and notes on distribution, habitat and conservation status of the new species are provided.

A new species, Strigula oleistrata, segregated from S. novae-zelandiae is described. The new species is widely sympatric with Strigula novae-zelandiae from which it is separated by a range of morphological characters and also by its nrDNA ITS sequence. As a result of this segregation, a new circumscription of S. novae-zelandiae is also provided. Comments on the ecology and conservation status of both species, and a revised key to the foliicolous Strigula species of New Zealand are provided.

The genus Helosciadium has six species of which three have been identified in Portugal: H. nodiflorum, frequent and abundant in much of the territory, and H. inundatum and H. repens, with a scattered distribution in Portugal. In the present study, a new species, Helosciadium milfontinum, a seriously threatened plant endemic, rare and scarce that grows in the temporary ponds of the Vicentinan Coastal District is described and illustrated. Morphological characters and molecular analysis of nuclear internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and plastid regions (matK, rps16-trnK and trnL-F) confirm the existence of this new taxon. Conservation status and taxonomic relationships of the new species are examined.

A new species of Pentanema, P. kurdistanicum is described and illustrated from Kurdistan, west of Iran. The new species was found scattered among rocks in the subalpine zone of S Marivan, in a low number of individuals. The new species is compared with the nearest allies, P. flexuosum and P. prasinurum. The phytochoria, morphological characters, ecology, conservation status, distribution map and phenology of the new species are presented.

We describe, as a new species, the northern Flinders Ranges populations of the myobatrachid frog Crinia riparia. It isdistinguished from C. riparia sensu stricto on the basis of reciprocal monophyly of mitochondrial genes, absence ofhaplotype sharing in a nuclear gene, fixed differences in allozyme loci and differences in larval oral disc morphologyconsistent with less adaptation to stream habitats. We were not able to reliably distinguish the taxa on the basis of adultmorphology. The geographic range of C. riparia sensu stricto is now reduced to a 75 kilometre section of the southernFlinders Ranges from Napperby Gorge in the south to Mt Brown in the north suggesting that an assessment of its conservation status is warranted.

Hedysarum persicum (Hedysareae, Leguminosae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Talesh Mountains in northwestern Iran. Diagnostic morphological characters useful in discriminating the new species from its close relative H. cappadocicum are explained. Some notes are also presented on the ecology, distribution, and conservation status of the new species.

Ornithogalum beyazoglui Y.Bagci, Savran & O. D. Düsen sp. nov. (Hyacinthaceae), a new species is described and illustrated from Ýzmir, Ödemis, Bozdag (Ýzmir, Ödemis province). Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed, including SEM examination of seed coat surface. Data are also presented on ecology, biogeography and conservation status of the new species.
