Saxipoa and Sylvipoa - two new genera and a new classification for Australian Poa (Poaceae: Poinae)

Two species are removed from the genus Poa in Australia on the basis of morphology and DNA and placed in new genera. One is placed in Saxipoa Soreng, L.J.Gillespie & S.W.L.Jacobs – type: S. saxicola (R.Br.) Soreng, L.J.Gillespie & S.W.L.Jacobs; and one is placed in Sylvipoa Soreng, L.J.Gillespie & S.W.L.Jacobs – type: S. queenslandica (C.E.Hubb.) Soreng, L.J.Gillespie & S.W.L.Jacobs. An infrageneric classification of Poa is proposed that places all 41 indigenous Australian species in P. subg. Poa supersect. Homalopoa sect. Brizoides. Thirty-three of these species, plus six species of New Zealand Poa, are placed in a new P. subsect. Australopoa Soreng, L.J.Gillespie & S.W.L.Jacobs. Two species are placed in P. subsect. Austrofestuca (Tzvelev) Soreng, L.J.Gillespie & S.W.L.Jacobs, one in P. subsect. Brizoides (Pilg. ex Potztal) Soreng, L.J.Gillespie & S.W.L.Jacobs, and one in P. subsect. Neuropoa (Clayton) Soreng, L.J.Gillespie & S.W.L.Jacobs.

In the Lower Devonian the first productellids evolved from their chonetidine ancestors as the Productellinae. This subfamily was the stem group from which all the later Productidina evolved, yet three of its five subfamilies persisted to the end of the Permian. The main characters used in the new classification, here presented, for the Productellidae are described and reviewed, and the main changes seen during its evolution are discussed. Within this new classification five new genera are described: in the Overtoniinae are Barunkhuraya Lazarev from the latest Famennian, Onavia Lazarev from the Tournaisian, both from Mongolia, and Echinariella Lazarev (type species Krotovia jisuensiformis Sarycheva) from the late Permian of Transcaucasia; in the Marginiferinae there is Breileenia Brunton from the Visean of western Europe and in the Plicatiferinae is Maemia Lazarev from the mid and Upper Carboniferous on the coast of the Barents Sea. New species described in these genera are Barunkhuraya indrengynensis Lazarev, Onavia barunkhurensis Lazarev, Breileenia radiata Brunton, Maemia chaykensis Lazarev, and M. nana Lazarev.

Two new genera, Plesiothele and Bymainiella, are erected to receive all the Australian species of the subfamily Hexathelinae, which now comprises four genera, including Hexathele with 20 species from New Zealand, and Scotinoecus with two species from South America. Plesiothele is a monotypic Tasmanian genus, type-species Hexathele fentoni Hickman, 1936. Bymainiella comprises 12 new species: B. boycei, B. boydi, B. brindabella, B. cannoni, B. grayi, B. lugubris, B. monteithi, B. montisbossi, B. otwayensis, B. polesoni, B. tubrabucca and B. variabilis; also B. montana (Hickman, 1927), and B. terraereginae (Raven, 1976), the latter being the type-species. The typespecies of Scotinoecus, S. cinereopilosus, is redescribed, and keys to the genera of the subfamily Hexathelinae, and to the Bymainiella species, are given. Two new indices are introduced to overcome the problem of bilateral variability. Bymainiella is believed to be the sister group of Scotinoecus.

AbstractCryptovelia terrestris n. gen., n. sp. (Brazil), Darwinivelia fosteri n. gen., n. sp. (Galapagos Is.), Mniovelia kuscheli n. gen., n. sp. (New Zealand), and Cavaticovelia n. gen. (type-species: Speovelia aaa Gagné & Howarth, 1975; Hawaii) are described. The phylogenetic relationships between the mesoveliid genera are discussed in the light of characters revealed by the new taxa. Habitat preferences of mesoveliids include humid terrestrial and/or marginal aquatic habitats, which probably are the most ancestral, and lava-tubes, coastal caves, intertidal marine habitats, and the plant-covered freshwater surface, which probably are the derived kinds of habitats. A classification of the Mesoveliidae with a check list of genera and species is presented. Two subfamilies are recognized: Madeoveliinae (with two genera) and Mesoveliinae (seven genera). The biogeography of the Mesoveliidae is finally discussed.

The Aderidae (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea) of New Zeland are revised to include four genera and fourteen species. Three genera are described as new: one distributed throughout the Australasian region (Zenascus gen. n.) one endemic to the north and south islands of New Zealand (Transrenus gen. n.), and one that is endemic to the south island of New Zealand (Pseudozena gen. n.). Six species are also newly described (Pseudozena denticulata sp. n., Transrenus thulater sp. n., Zenascus roberti sp. n., Z. incensum sp. n., Z. elenae sp. n., Z. aurum sp. n.). All previously described New Zealand species of aderids contained in the preoccupied genus Xylophilus are transferred to the newly erected genus Zenascus, resulting in six new combinations (Z. antennalis (Broun), comb. n.; Z. coloratus (Broun), comb. n.; Z. luniger (Champion), comb. n.; Z. nitidus (Broun), comb. n.; Z. obscurus (Broun), comb. n.; Z. xenarthrus (Broun, 1910: 54), comb. n.). Holotype and lectotype designations are made or verified for all previously described species. The New Zealand species Xylophilus pictipes Broun is synonymized with Zenascus obscurus, syn. n. and Scraptogetus nigricans is synonymized with Scraptogetus anthracinus, syn. n. The Australian genus Pseudananca Blackburn 1893 is synonymized with the New Zealand genus Scraptogetus Broun, syn. n. Keys to the genera and species are included. Phenotypic characters previously employed in the higher classification of the Aderidae, including secondary sexually dimorphic characters, are discussed and a phylogenetic analysis for the ten New Zealand species of Zenascus is performed to reconstruct trait evolution in males, which display extreme dimorphic antennomere modifications.

This paper addresses the systematics of the New Zealand spiders of the family Malkaridae. Malkarids are small araneoid spiders that live primarily in the leaf litter and mosses of temperate and tropical wet forests in Australia and New Zealand, with the exception of a single species in southern South America and another in New Caledonia. We treat the New Zealand species of Malkaridae that are not members of the subfamily Pararchaeinae, a monophyletic group of 11 new species that we classify in 2 new genera (Tingotingo, gen. nov. and Whakamoke, gen. nov.) and a new subfamily (Tingotinginae, subfam. nov.). We describe, diagnose, illustrate and map the distribution of specimen records of these 11 new species of New Zealand Malkaridae: Tingotingo porotiti, sp. nov., T. pouaru, sp. nov., T. tokorera, sp. nov., T. aho, sp. nov., Whakamoke orongorongo, sp. nov.; W. tarakina, sp. nov.; W. guacamole, sp. nov.; W. hunahuna, sp. nov.; W. paoka, sp. nov.; W. heru, sp. nov.; and W. rakiura, sp. nov. We also treat the phylogenetic relationships of Malkaridae and use the results of our previous work on the molecular phylogeny of Araneoidea as the bases for the classification of the family. Tingotingo, gen. nov. and Whakamoke, gen. nov. are sister clades. Tingotinginae, subfam. nov. is the sister group of the Malkarinae plus Pararchaeinae clade. We further hypothesise and discuss the morphological synapomorphies of Malkaridae, Tingotinginae, subfam. nov. and the two new genera.

Circumscription and infrageneric classification of Kunzea is evaluated after phylogenetic analyses of nrDNA ITS and ETS sequences. Kunzea is monophyletic if the K. ericoides complex and the monotypic Angasomyrtus are included. The genus can be divided into western Australian, eastern Australian, and eastern Australian plus New Zealand clades. Angasomyrtus has greater affinity with the eastern Kunzea species, despite its western Australian endemic status. A new infrageneric classification is proposed, recognising four subgenera, with a further division into sections within two of these. A new combination in Kunzea is made for Angasomyrtus.
