Taxonomy of Echium (Boraginaceae) species from Cape Verde Islands

The morphological variation of endemic species from the Macaronesian Islands has long attracted attention of many taxonomists. The taxonomy of the endemic Echium L. species (E. hypertropicum Webb, E. stenosiphon Webb and E. vulcanorum A.Chev.) from Cape Verde Islands was revised, on the basis of in situ collected material and on herbarium specimens. Our results revealed that the patterns of morphological variation correspond closely to the geographic localisation of the islands groups, and that habit and floral morphology are important for distinguishing the two southern taxa, E. hypertropicum and E. vulcanorum, from the northern species, E. stenosiphon. This species has the same ecological preferences (e.g. altitude; exposition; soil type) in São Nicolau, São Vicente and Santo Antão Islands. However, the differences in indumentum observed among E. stenosiphon specimens account for the occurrence of different taxonomic groups distributed in these Northern Islands. The two southern species, E. hypertropicum and E. vulcanorum, are morphologically similar, but have different ecological preferences, a pattern of variation similar to other Macaronesian Echium species. Furthermore, the morphological variation observed among the three Cape Verde species, discussed within the general context of Echium taxonomy and closely related genera (e.g. Lobostemon, Echiostachys and Pontechium), suggests that the systematic relationships are beyond the actual circumscription of these genera.

Taxa within the Diuris punctata species complex exhibit high levels of variation at both species and population level. Morphometric data collected in situ were used to investigate species boundaries of four Victorian Diuris species within the Diuris punctata species complex. Morphological characters and taxonomic groups identified in the present study were compared to those described under the current taxonomic treatment. Sixty-five multistate and continuous characters, including seven vegetative and 58 floral characters, were measured in situ across the range of each species within Victoria. The importance of flower colour in distinguishing taxa was highlighted but characters used were generally indiscrete. Certain characters used in current taxonomic descriptions, e.g. floral fragrance, were found to be uninformative. D. fragrantissima was confirmed as a separate taxon within the D. punctata group, justifying its recognition as a unique entity for conservation. Clustering of D. daltonii within D. punctata suggests that the recent elevation of the D. punctata var. daltonii to species level is not justified. The in situ measurement of morphological characters made it possible to incorporate sufficient sampling to encompass intra-specific and intra-population variation and is a feasible method to overcome sampling limitations encountered when herbarium specimens and limited destructive sampling are used.

Abstract The intertidal barnacle Chthamalus stellatus has a broad distribution, occurring in the Mediterranean, the east Atlantic shores and east Atlantic Macaronesian Islands (Madeira, the Canaries and the Azores). Traditionally, based on morphological characters, Chthamalus of the Cape Verde Islands were also regarded as C. stellatus. However, using a mitochondrial gene and two nuclear genes, we found that although Chthamalus from Cape Verde is morphologically similar to C. stellatus, there are genetic differences between the two that are larger than those found between different species of Chthamalus. We thus claim that these genetic differences justify the assignment of the Cape Verde populations as an evolutionarily significant unit and a sister clade to C. stellatus. We also show that the connection between taxonomic units that are close to each other lies not only in the resemblance between DNA sequences. We have found that numerous point mutations characterizing the Cape Verde Chthamalus are present as infrequent alleles in C. stellatus, indicating that two close taxonomic units can also share polymorphisms present in their common ancestor.

AbstractScavenging raptors have been postulated to be declining at a rate far higher than predatory raptors. To test this hypothesis we reviewed the historical and present status of the seven raptor species—three scavengers (two kites and a vulture), one partial scavenger (a buzzard) and three species (osprey and two falcons) that take live prey—that breed on the Cape Verde islands. Scavenging raptors have experienced steeper declines and more local extinctions than non-scavengers in Cape Verde, with the partial scavenger midway between the two groups. Causes of scavenger decline include incidental poisoning, direct persecution and declines in the availability of carcasses and other detritus. These findings, which highlight the conservation importance of the island of Santo Antão, indicate the priority that needs to be accorded to scavengers, particularly in Europe where many insular populations are reaching unsustainable levels.

A study of morphological variation in Leptorhynchos squamatus (Labill.) Less. across its range in south-eastern Australia was undertaken to test the hypothesis that L. squamatus includes two taxa. Phenetic pattern analyses of both field-collected and herbarium specimens on the basis of morphology confirmed two major groups. Bract, cypsela, pappus bristle and leaf characters were particularly important in separating the two groups. The taxa are separated by altitude differences with one being a low-altitude plant found in many habitats and the other being a high-altitude taxon that is a major component of alpine meadows. Lowland plants have dark bract tips, fewer and wider pappus bristles than alpine plants, papillae on the cypselas and more linear leaves. A somewhat intermediate population from the Major Mitchell Plateau in the Grampians shows some alpine and some lowland characters but is included in the lowland taxon. Seeds from five populations (two alpine, two lowland and Major Mitchell) were germinated and plants grown for 18 weeks under four controlled sets of environmental conditions. The experiment showed that leaf size and some other characters are affected by environmental conditions, but that there are underlying genetic differences between the lowland and alpine forms. Leptorhynchos squamatus subsp. alpinus Flann is described here to accommodate the highland taxon.

The genus Pselactus in the Cape Verde Islands is reviewed. Pselactus obesulus (Wollaston, 1867) from São Vicente is redescribed and P. strakai sp. nov. from São Nicolau is described. Both species are diagnosed and illustrated; their larvae are described, larval morphology is discussed and the current state of knowledge about immature stages of Cossoninae is summarized. The systematic position of the genus within Onycholipini is reviewed, and the placement of genus in Cossoninae is discussed. A short note on biogeography of Pselactus is provided.

This paper takes as a point of departure the hypothesis that Papiamentu descends from Upper Guinea Portuguese Creole (a term covering the sister varieties of the Cape Verde Islands and Guinea-Bissau and Casamance), speakers of which arrived on Curaçao in the second half of the 17th century, subsequently shifted their basic content vocabulary towards Spanish, but maintained the original morphosyntax. This scenario raises the question of whether, in addition to being a creole, Papiamentu can be analyzed as a so-called mixed (or intertwined) language. The present paper positively answers this question by drawing parallels between (the emergence of) Papiamentu and recognized mixed languages.
