Australian Spermacoce (Rubiaceae: Spermacoceae). I. Northern Territory

Northern Territory Spermacoce are revised, with 53 native species recognised, as well as four introduced species. Thirty-nine new species are described, and S. laevigata var. hispida Benth. is raised to species level. Lectotypes are chosen for all Australian Spermacoce names that had any ambiguity regarding types. Key features used to distinguish species, such as the appendages that occur on the inside of the corolla lobes and various seed characteristics, are illustrated and discussed. A key to all the Spermacoce species occurring in the Northern Territory is provided, along with distribution maps.

The taxonomy of the Nearctic Nylanderia fauna is revised. Three new species are established, bringing the total numberof native species from the region to 14. The new species are: N. magnella, N. querna, and N. trageri. Several speciespossess workers that are difficult to distinguish from each other and the presence of males is required for morphologicalidentification. This is particularly the case with N. vividula and N. terricola. Two subspecies are synonymized: N. vividulamjobergi is considered a junior synonym of N. vividula and N. vividula antillana is considered a junior synonym of N.guatemalensis. At least five Nylanderia species have been introduced to the Nearctic region, including: N. bourbonica,N. flavipes, N. fulva, N. pubens, and N. steinheili. Another species, N. guatemalensis, is also included because its widedistribution across the Caribbean and Central America suggest it could become introduced to the Nearctic region. Iden-tification keys are provided for the workers of native and introduced species and the males of native species. Distributionmaps are provided for native and introduced species. Photomontage images are provided for the worker of each introduced species and all castes of the native species.

A new tribe of the Conocephalinae, Armadillagraeciini Rentz, Su, Ueshima is described to include three known Australiangenera: Armadillagraecia, Kapalgagraecia and Lichenagraecia gen. nov. Lichenagraecia gen. nov. is the eastern repre-sentative of the tribe, the others from the Northern Territory, northern Western Australia and western Queensland. Threenew genera in the tribe Agraeciini are described from the rainforests of north-eastern Queensland, Australia. Ingrischa-graecia gen. nov. is known from a single species, I. iterika sp. nov. Emeraldagraecia gen. nov. is known from two spe-cies, E. munggarifrons and E. windsorana spp. nov. Miniagraecia gen. nov. is described from two species: M. milyali andM. goorijupa spp. nov. In the Listroscelidinae; Requenini, a new species of the previously monotypic genus Xingbaoia,X. irvineorum sp. nov. is described from two localities in peril from repeated prescribed burning. Distribution maps, keys, measurements, song patterns and cytological observations are provided for most species.

The rodent fauna of the monsoonal tropics of the Northern Territory comprises 23 native species and two introduced species. Three species (Zyzomys maini, Z. palatalis and Pseudomys calabyi) are endemic to the area, and four species (Pseudomys hermannsburgensis, P. desertor, P. johnsoni and Notomys alexis) enter the area only on its southern (arid) fringe. The rodent fauna is closely related to that of the Kimberley, Western Australia. Distribution maps for all species are given. One species (Z. palatalis) has an extremely restricted range and is regarded as critically endangered. The lack of information on the distribution and abundance of rodents in general in this area is evident in the national classification of five of its species (Xeromys myoides, Mesembriomys macrurus, Notomys aquilo, Pseudomys desertor and Pseudomys johnsoni) as Insufficiently Known. The two introduced rodents (Mus domesticus and Rattus rattus) are virtually restricted to urban and highly modified areas, although R. rattus also occurs on one uninhabited island. In contrast to that of much of the rest of Australia, this rodent fauna has apparently retained its full complement of species since European colonisation. This enduring legacy is attributable largely to the relatively limited modification of its environments. However, three species (Mesembriomys macrurus, Rattus tunneyi and Conilurus penicillatus) appear to be declining. The pattern of decline in these species, and in the mammal fauna generally, is obscured by the very limited historical data. However, declines appear most pronounced in the cattle country of the Victoria River District and Gulf regions. Priorities for the management of this rodent fauna include survey of poorly known areas, survey for poorly known species, monitoring of rodent communities, and landscape-wide management of the three pervasive processes with probably greatest impacts – fire, grazing and feral predators.

A new species of the spider genusLoxoscelesHeineken & Lowe, 1832,Loxoscelesmalintzisp. n., is described from the states of Puebla, Morelos and Guerrero, in the central region of Mexico. The description is based on adult males and females with morphological and ultra-morphological images. Updated distribution maps are provided for the 39 species recorded from the Mexican territory (including the new species). The states with the greatest diversity are Baja California Sur, Baja California and Sonora, with five species each. A total of 441 records for the 39 species, based on arachnological collections, data bases and literature, were used to update the distribution maps.LoxoscelesbonetiGertsch, 1958 is the species with the highest number of records in Mexico, with a total of 58 records from different localities. The states with the most records so far are Guerrero, with 55 records, Morelos, with 35 records, and Baja California Sur, with 30 records.Loxoscelesrufescens(Dufour, 1820), an introduced species, is recorded for the second time in Mexico, from the state of Chihuahua, being the first well-documented record for the country. Mexico has the greatest diversity of species ofLoxoscelesworldwide, with 39 (two introduced species) of the 134 described species. Additionally, biogeographical comments for the species from Mexico are provided.

AbstractUroleucon is one of the largest genera of Macrosiphini, with 216 known species; it is one of the few genera of Aphidinae to have a diversification in South America, with 15 native species and 1 subspecies. Moreover, 7 introduced species have been recorded in South America. Five new species from Argentina are described herein: Uroleucon malarguense Ortego and Nieto Nafría, sp. nov., U. mendocinum Mier Durante and Ortego, sp. nov., U. patagonicum Nieto Nafría and Seco Fernández, sp. nov., U. payuniense Ortego and Nieto Nafría, sp. nov., and U. riojanum Nieto Nafría and Mier Durante, sp. nov. One Palearctic species, U. jaceae (Linnaeus), has been recorded for the first time in South America, and thus 28 species and 1 subspecies are now known from South America. Uroleucon essigi Carvalho and U. chilense (Essig) are recorded for the first time from Argentina, and 20 of these 29 taxa are known for this country. New morphological and bionomic data from some previously known species are given. Alate viviparous females of U. gochnatiae Delfino and oviparae and males of U. bereticum (Blanchard) and U. macolai (Blanchard) are described. A taxonomic discussion about native South American species of Uroleucon is given, and we include them at present in the subgenus Lambersius. A key is provided for the identification of apterous and alate viviparous females.

We revise the species of green anoles (i.e., the species related to Anolis aliniger, A. chlorocyanus, and A. coelestinus) occuring on Hispaniola. Based on our analyses of morphological and molecular genetic data we recognize 16 species of green anoles, eight of which we describe as new species (A. apletolepis sp. nov., A. chlorodius sp. nov., A. divius sp. nov., A. eladioi sp. nov., A. gonavensis sp. nov., A. leucodera sp. nov., A. prasinorius sp. nov. and A. viridius sp. nov.) and three of which are raised from subspecific to species level (A. cyanostictus, A. demissus and A. pecuarius) and one is resurrected from synonymy with A. chlorocyanus (A. peynadoi). Because the six syntypes of A. chlorocyanus (MNHN 785, 787, 2007.2066–09) are conspecific with the only available syntype of A. coelestinus (i.e., MCZ 3347), we have petitioned the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) to use its plenary power to set aside the type status of the syntypes of Anolis chlorocyanus and to allow the designation of a neotype in order to stabilize the current and long established usage of the names A. chlorocyanus and A. coelestinus. For each species we provide a standardized description of external morphology, color descriptions in life, color photographs in life, description and illustration of hemipenis morphology (if available), distribution maps based on the specimens examined, comments on the conservation status, and natural history notes. Finally, we provide a dichotomous key for the identification of the 16 species of green anoles occuring on Hispaniola.

A summary of the literature on the digeneans of wild mammals in Argentina is presented. This is the first compilation of 51 parasitological papers published from 1909 to present. This review includes 26 native species and two introduced species (1 Artiodactyla, 6 Carnivora, 6 Cetacea, 3 Chiroptera, 2 Didelphimorphia, 1 Primate, 8 Rodentia and 1 Lagomorpha) and contains 42 species of adult digeneans belonging to 32 genera and 18 families, of which 9 species (21%) were recorded as new species. The present review provides data on hosts, geographical distribution, site of infection, life cycle, the location of material deposited in Helminthological Collections and references for the parasite species arranged by families. A host/parasite list is also provided. In addition, Gymnoacetabulum n g. is proposed to replaced the genus Suttonia Lunaschi, 2002 (Lecithodendriidae) from bats, which is preoccupied by Suttonia Smith, 1953 (Perciformes, Serranidae).

Background and Aims: The genus Hydrangea consists of approximately 200 taxa in Asia and America. Whereas the shrubby species from Asia and the USA, as well as the over 1000 hybrids and cultivars derived from these, are very well known because of their ornamental value, the Neotropical species are much less appreciated. Hydrangea section Cornidia, currently consisting of 13 accepted taxa, occurs from Mexico to Chile and Argentina, with one species in southeast Asia. Its representatives are root-climbing lianas which may grow up to 60 m high in the tree canopy of temperate to (sub)tropical forests. Extensive field work throughout their distribution area and study of herbarium specimens has resulted in the discovery of new taxa. We present here a revision of the ten currently known Mexican species.Methods: Field work was carried out in northwestern, central and southeastern Mexico, including exploration in areas where the genus had not been collected before. Detailed morphological and architectural studies of all species were carried out, based on living plants in their natural habitat, as well as on dried specimens from our own collections and all available herbarium material.Key results: Six Hydrangea species new to science are described here, including an identification key for the native species and one widely cultivated species, illustrations and distribution maps. Additionally, amended descriptions for two earlier described species are presented, as a result of which all currently known native Mexican Hydrangeas now dispose of a detailed morphological description.Conclusions: The genus Hydrangea exemplifies the lack of taxon-specific botanical collection activities in Mexico. The discovery of these new species is even more surprising taking into account the considerable size of these plants. All Mexican Hydrangea species are threatened, mainly due to deforestation and land use changes.

A floristic treatment of the Cyclanthaceae from the Bahia State, Brazil, is presented. Four native species in three genera are recognized: Asplundia gardneri, A. maximiliani, Evodianthus funifer and Thoracocarpus bissectus. Carludovica palmata, an introduced species, also occurs in the State. Identification key, descriptions and general comments on taxa as well as illustrations and distribution maps of species are presented.

Scrophularia dianatnejadii Ranjbar & Rahchamani, a new species from Tehran Province in northern Iran, is described and illustrated. It is closely related to S. amplexicaulis Benth. and shares with it some diagnostic morphological characters such as habit, plant indument, phyllotaxy, and corolla shape and color. Both species are placed in Scrophularia L. sect. Mimulopsis Boiss. Macro- and micromorphological characters of the two are examined and compared. Pollen morphology of these species is investigated using SEM. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps, and conservation status of both species are provided.
