Continuous grazing systems (CGS) are still widely used for managing cattle herds in the south-western Alps. Recently, Pastoral Plans have been used as a policy tool to improve grazing management. Rotational grazing systems (RGS) with large paddocks (i.e. ~100 ha on average) and stocking rate adjustments based on recommended levels calculated from vegetation surveys have been implemented through Pastoral Plans to improve the uniformity of grazing. A case study was conducted to compare grazing distribution patterns of beef cows during the summer under CGS and RGS on sub-alpine and alpine pastures within Val Troncea Natural Park in the south-western Alps of Italy. Cows were tracked with global positioning system collars at 15-min intervals under both CGS and RGS. Cattle distribution patterns were aggregated in both grazing systems, but in the RGS concentration of grazing was less clustered and the selection of vegetation communities was more homogeneous than in CGS. Under CGS, cows were attracted (P < 0.05) to salt placements and areas with high forage pastoral values, and they avoided (P < 0.05) steep slopes. In contrast, cows under RGS were not influenced by (P > 0.05) high pastoral value, and they avoided areas farther from water (P < 0.05). Similar to CGS, cows under RGS were attracted (P < 0.05) to salt and avoided (P < 0.05) steep slopes. In the RGS, cows used steeper slopes and areas farther from salt and water in the second half of the grazing period within a paddock compared with the first half, which likely explains the improvement in uniformity of grazing with RGS. Our findings indicate that Pastoral Plans that combine appropriate stocking levels and RGS are valid policy and management tools that have the potential to improve grazing distribution on rough sub-alpine and alpine pastures in the south-western Alps.

Florida has 915,000 beef cows and 125,000 replacement heifers (USDA, 2016). Developing these heifers so that they can become productive females in the cow herd is a tremendous investment in a cow/calf operation, an investment that takes several years to make a return. The good news is that there are options to develop heifers on forage-based programs with the possibility of reducing costs while simultaneously meeting performance targets required by the beef industry. Mild winters in Florida allows utilization of cool-season forages that can significantly enhance the performance of grazing heifers. During the warm-season, integration of forage legumes into grazing systems will provide additional nutrients to meet the performance required to develop a replacement heifer to become pregnant and enter the mature cow herd. In this document, we will propose a model for replacement heifer development, based on forage research performed in trials at the NFREC Marianna.

Abstract The south-western division of Australia is the only biodiversity hotspot in Australia and is well-known for extreme levels of local endemism. Climate change has been identified as a key threat for flora and fauna, but very few data are presently available to evaluate its impact on invertebrate fauna. Here, we derive a molecular phylogeography for pseudoscorpions of the genus Pseudotyrannochthonius that in the south-west are restricted to regions with the highest rainfall. A dated molecular phylogeny derived from six gene fragments is used for biogeographic reconstruction analyses, spatial mapping, environmental niche-modelling, and to infer putative species. Phylogenetic analyses uncover nine clades with mostly allopatric distributions and often small linear ranges between 0.5 and 130 km. Molecular dating suggests that the origins of contemporary diversity fall into a period of warm/humid Palaeogene climates, but splits in the phylogeny coincide with major environmental shifts, such as significant global cooling during the Middle Miocene. By testing several models of historical biogeography available for the south-west, we determine that Pseudotyrannochthonius is an ancient relict lineage that principally follows a model of allopatric speciation in mesic zone refugia, although there are derivations from this model in that some species are older and distribution patterns more complex than expected. Ecological niche models indicate that drier and warmer future climates will lead to range contraction towards refugia of highest rainfall, probably mimicking past variations that have generated high diversity in these areas. Their conservation management will be crucial for preserving the unique biodiversity heritage of the south-west.

&lt;p&gt;The Alps have an overall East-West orientation, which changes radically in their western termination, where they rotate southward into a N-S strike, and then eastward into an E-W strike, forming the arc of the Western Alps. This arc is commonly inferred to have formed during collision, due to indentation of the Adriatic plate into the European continental margin. Several models attempted to provide a kinematic explanation for the formation of this arched, lateral end of the Alps. Indeed, the radial nature of the transport directions observed along the arc of the Western Alps cannot be explained by a classic convergence model.&lt;br&gt;For more than 50 years the formation of this arc was been associated to westward-directed indentation of Adria, accommodated along East-West oriented strike-slip faults, a sinistral one in the South of the arc and a dextral one in the North. The dextral one correspond to the Insubric Fault. The sinistral strike-slip zone, inferred to be localized along the &amp;#171;Stura corridor&amp;#187; (Piedmont, Italy) would correspond to a displacement of 100 to 150 km according to palaeogeographical, and geometric analyses. However, field evidence is scarce and barely documented in the literature.&lt;br&gt;Vertical axis rotations of the Adriatic indenter also inferred to be syn-collisional could have influenced the acquisition of the morphology of the arc. Paleomagnetic analyses carried out in the Internal Zone and in the Po plain suggest a southward increading amount of counter-clockwise rotation of the Adriatic plate and the Internal Zone, varying from 20&amp;#176;-25&amp;#176; in the North to nearly 120&amp;#176; in the South.&lt;br&gt;Dextral shear zones possibly accommodating this rotation in some conceptual models is observed in several places below the Penninic Front and affect the Argentera massif to the south. However, the measured displacement quantities do not appear to be equivalent to those induced by such rotations.&lt;br&gt;The present study aims to constrain the kinematic evolution of the arc of the Western Alps through a multidisciplinary approach. The first aspect of this project is the structural analysis of the area (Stura corridor) inferred to accommodate large sinistral displacements allowing for the westward indentation of the Adriatic indenter. We discuss the general lack of field evidence supporting sinistral strike-slip movements, in contrast to large-scale compilation of structures suggesting the possible occurrence of such displacement. The second part consists of a palaeomagnetic study, in which new data are integred with a compilation of already existing data. This compilation shows that several parts of the arc in the External Zone did not suffer any Cenozoic rotations, hence suggesting that a proto-arc already axisted at the onset collision, as suggested by independent evidence of some paleogeographic reconstruction. Finally, 2D and 3D thermo-mechanical modeling in using the pTatin3D code is used to test which structural (geometrical), and rheological parameters affected the first-order morphology of the Western Alpin arc and its kinematics. The synthesis of these different approaches allows us to propose a new model explaining the kinematics and the mechanisms of formation of the Western Alps arc.&lt;/p&gt;

Throughout the last decades, agricultural abandonment in European mountain areas has caused changes in traditional livestock management with consequences for semi-natural grassland use and vegetation. In the Western Italian Alps, continuous extensive grazing has become the simplest and the most common system for managing large cattle herds. As a result, limited grazing in many rugged locations has led to an extensive shrub-encroachment of semi-natural grasslands in the sub-alpine and alpine belts. A study was conducted to assess if the provision of mineral mix supplements (MMS): (1) increases the use of steep and shrub-encroached locations by beef cows, and (2) helps restore meso-eutrophic grassland vegetation around supplement-deployment sites. During the summer grazing season, MMS were placed within 10 steep and shrub-encroached areas in two adjacent pastures (364 and 366 ha), and 12 cows were tracked with GPS collars. For each supplement site, a paired control site was identified, and vegetation surveys were performed in the surrounding areas of both sites. Placement of MMS increased the use of areas within 12 m of supplement locations compared with corresponding control areas. Cattle use of areas within 100 m of the MMS sites was also greater than expected by chance. The use by cattle, associated with trampling, grazing and faecal deposition, reduced the cover of shrubs and oligotrophic herbaceous species and increased the average nutrient N-value and forage pastoral value of the new vegetation types established around MMS sites 2 years after their use by cattle. Strategic placement of MMS appears to be a sustainable practice to restore sub-alpine and alpine shrub-encroached grasslands. Nevertheless these results must be considered preliminary as a longer period is needed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of this practice for the restoration of semi-natural grasslands.

In this contribution we present updates on the taxonomy and morphology of the South American species of Amitermes. Two new species are described: Amitermes bandeirai, sp. n., from Brazil, and Amitermes lilloi, sp. n., from Argentina. Amitermes nordestinus is a junior synonym of Amitermes aporema. The imago of A. aporema is described for the first time. Detailed comparative gut anatomy of the eight species is presented for the first time. The geographic distribution of Amitermes in South America is expanded and the distribution patterns of some species are discussed.
