The seed and forage production of a diverse group of the perennial forage legume Cullen spp., collected in southern Australia, was assessed with the aim of discovering diversity for exploitation in future breeding programs. Eighty ecotypes were assessed at the Waite Institute in South Australia, using replicated, spaced-plant field trials, between 2008 and 2012. Seed production in collected ecotypes of Cullen (Expt 1) ranged from 0 to 485 kg ha–1 for windrowed seed yield and from 0 to 790 kg ha–1 for total seed yield, which included vacuum-harvested seed from pods that had fallen to the ground. Individual plants were selected for seed production from their original populations, and the seed and fodder production of their progeny was evaluated in a further field experiment (Expt 2). Moderate to high heritability estimates were recorded for seed production traits. Seed production in progeny families ranged from 0 to1 423 kg ha–1 and was highly correlated with the number of seeds per inflorescence (r = 0.85) and forage yield (r = 0.59). Edible biomass, measured using the Adelaide visual appraisal method, ranged from 50 to 906 g dry weight  (DW)  plant–1 in parent ecotypes and from 404 to 1248 g DW plant–1 in the selected family progenies. Disease infection with anthracnose (Colletotrichum trifolii) caused considerable damage to plants in Expt 1, resulting in the death of all plants of 10 ecotypes, and infection with Alfalfa mosaic virus in Expt 2 was linked to the death of 67 individuals. The results are discussed in relation to breeding C. australasicum for increased seed yield and disease resistance to overcome these deficiencies as barriers to commercial adoption.

Multiple regression and response surface plots were used to analyze the effects of common lambsquarters population density and interference duration on weed growth and soybean seed yield. Under favorable growing conditions in 1986, weed biomass production at all population densities and interference durations was four to five times that produced in 1987, under less favorable conditions. However, there was no significant treatment by year interaction for soybean seed yield reduction by common lambsquarters, and production of each kg/ha weed biomass resulted in an average soybean yield reduction of 0.26 kg/ha. Utilizing 5% yield loss as an arbitrary threshold level, the regression equation predicted a common lambsquarters density threshold of 2 plants/m of row for 5 weeks of interference after crop emergence and 1 plant/m of row for 7 weeks. Seed production by individual common lambsquarters plants was highly correlated (r=0.92) with weed dry weight, and seed production ranged from 30 000 to 176 000 seeds/plant.

At Shika in a subhumid environment of Nigeria, a 3-year study was carried out to select newly developed groundnut varieties for use in crop–livestock production systems. The study examined 11 groundnut varieties. Emergence time, plant stands at full emergence, forage and seed yields and yield components were examined. Whole plant samples were analysed for crude protein (CP) content. Varieties ICGV 87123 gave the lowest forage yield and cultivar M517-80I, the highest, with seven varieties recording forage yields above 5 t/ha. The CP content of forage was lowest (14·8%) for variety M576-80I and highest (21·6%) for variety M554-76. Mean seed yield (over 3 years) varied significantly from 0·73 to 1·68 t/ha. Only two varieties had mean seed yield >1 t/ha. The relationship between seed and forage yields was positive and significant (r = 0·529, P < 0·006). Varieties RMP 12, 88-80I and M517–80 were most promising for both forage and seed production.

Smooth barley is an annual weed species that is infesting crops and pastures in South Australia. Complicating control options is the presence of herbicide-resistant biotypes. A field trial was conducted to identify alternative herbicides for the management of acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicide-resistant smooth barley in field pea. Preplant (PP) soil applications of pyroxasulfone; prosulfocarb plus S-metolachlor; dimethenamid-P; propyzamide; trifluralin alone or with triallate or with diuron; or imazamox applied POST were evaluated for their effectiveness and crop safety. Propyzamide, pyroxasulfone, or imazamox applied POST provided a high level of smooth barley control, did not cause any crop injury, and increased field pea grain or forage yield compared with the nontreated. Furthermore, propyzamide or pyroxasulfone reduced panicle density and seed production in smooth barley, whereas the effectiveness of POST imazamox varied over the two seasons. Dimethenamid-P reduced the impact of smooth barley on field pea yield, but cause stunting, and was less effective than propyzamide, pyroxasulfone, and imazamox in reducing smooth barley seed production. Negative relationship between field pea yield and smooth barley panicle density indicated that smooth barley is highly competitive in field pea crops and can cause large yield losses. The results of this investigation suggest that propyzamide or pyroxasulfone applied PP and imazamox applied POST could be used effectively in the field for the management of ACCase-inhibiting herbicide-resistant smooth barley in South Australia.

Field trials were conducted in 2017 and 2018 wet seasons at Federal University Dutse Teaching and Research Farm (Latitude 11 46, 39”N and Longitude 9 20, 30”E) in the Sudan Savanna of Nigeria. To evaluate performance of sesame varieties as affected by poultry manure and weed control methods. The treatments consisted of five weed control treatments (pre-emergence application of ButachlorEC50%,  hoe weeding at 3WAS +pre-emergence butachlor EC50%, pre-emergence butachlor EC50%+hoe weeding at 3 and 6WAS, hoe weeding @ 3 and 6WAS and weedy check), three level of poultry manure (5, 10, and 15t/ha) and three sesame varieties (Ben 01, Yandev 55 and Ben 04E. The treatments were laid out in split plot design and replicated three times. The results indicated that weed control methods had significant effect (0.05) on the sesame growth and seed yield comparable to hoe weeding control at 3 and 6WAS where plant height number of leaves,  capsule number per plant and seed yield of sesame were significant higher with the application of butachlor plus hoe weeding at 3 and 6WAS compared to others weed control methods.  Poultry manure application on sesame as 15t/ha gave taller plant height, more number of leaves, higher sesame dry weight, longer capsule length and seed yield of sesame than the other rates while Ben 01(455 and 1043 ) perform better than the others two varieties (Yandev 498, 756 and Ben4E 522 and 765 ) for 2017 and 2018 seasons.  In conclusion,

Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) infection of the annual barrel medic, Medicago truncatula, has been shown to cause significant reductions in growth and productivity in field and pot trials. The degree of reduction was dependent on the medic cultivar and the virus isolate. In some experiments herbage production was reduced by more than 50%. Although infection did not appear to be associated with significant changes in root growth, root nodulation of infected plants was about one-third less than that of healthy plants. Two AMV isolates showed different effects on seed production. Infection with one virus isolate was associated with a 15-30% decrease in seed production, and the virus was detected in more than 2% of seed from the infected plants, whereas the other isolate failed to reduce seed yield and did not appear to infect any seeds.

Tristar is an annual forage legume cultivar of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graceum). This cultivar was developed at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Research Centre, Lethbridge, AB. Tristar biomass yield was 2 and 11% higher than the check cultivar Amber under dryland and irrigated conditions, respectively. This cultivar produced 26% more seed yield than Amber under irrigated condition in southern Alberta. Tristar will be an attractive alternative to alfalfa in short-term rotations as it produces as much biomass as two cuts of alfalfa and unlike alfalfa is bloat free and contains the steroidal compound diosgenin. In the mid 2000s subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) seed producers in South Australia reported symptoms of a red-leaf disease in fields with reduced seed yields. The red-leaf symptoms resembled those caused by several clover-infecting viruses. A set of molecular diagnostic tools were developed for the following viruses which are known to infect subterranean clover: Alfalfa mosaic virus; Bean leafroll virus (BLRV); Beet western yellows virus; Bean yellow mosaic virus; Cucumber mosaic virus; Pea seed-borne mosaic virus; Soybean dwarf virus and Subterranean clover stunt virus. Surveys of subterranean clover seed production fields in 2008 in the south-east of South Australia and western Victoria identified Bean leafroll virus, Alfalfa mosaic virus and Cucumber mosaic virus as present, with BLRV the most widespread. Surveys of pasture seed production fields and pasture evaluation trials in 2009 confirmed that BLRV was widespread. This result will allow seed producers to determine whether control measures directed against BLRV will overcome their seed losses. Bluegreen aphid (Acyrthosiphon kondoi) was implicated as a potential vector of BLRV because it was observed to be colonising lucerne plants adjacent to subterranean clover seed production paddocks with BLRV, and in a glasshouse trial it transmitted BLRV from an infected lucerne plant to subterranean clover in a persistent manner.

Components of seed yield were measured in an erect, early-flowering biotype and a prostrate, late-flowering biotype of Lolium perenne cv. Kangaroo Valley at temperatures from 15/10 to 24/19�C (12/12 h day/night). We aimed to determine if each biotype had distinctive components of seed yield, and if these varied according to temperature. The two biotypes had distinctive paths to seed yield. Seed yield per plant in an erect biotype depended more on seed weight per spike and less on spike number than in a prostrate biotype. The distinctive paths to seed yield, and relative stability in paths across temperatures, indicated that it was possible to select genotypes from within the Kangaroo Valley cultivar which had particular correlations among components of yield. Floral development was accelerated, but seed yield per plant and most of its components were reduced, at high temperature; only the mean daily rate of dry weight accumulation by individual seeds was the same at all temperatures. At any temperature, seed weight per spike declined almost linearly with lateness of spike emergence within a plant: spikes which emerged within 21 days of the earliest spike contributed 80% of the seed yield per plant. We conclude that biotypes can be selected within the Kangaroo Valley cultivar to have distinctive components of seed yield and, based on the two biotypes we studied, commercial seed production should be based at a location having relatively low temperatures.

Experiments were conducted at Minlaton on the Yorke Peninsula of South Australia in 2004 and 2005 to study the effect of four different seeding systems and dinitroaniline herbicides on the seedling emergence and growth of rigid ryegrass in wheat. The seeding systems were low soil-disturbance discs (DayBreak and K-Hart) and high soil-disturbance tines (narrow point and Ribbon seeder); and the herbicides were oryzalin, pendimethalin, and trifluralin at rate of 0.72 kg ai/ha. The total seedling emergence of rigid ryegrass was higher in nontreated plots planted with the tines compared with the discs. In general, oryzalin was the least-effective herbicide in controlling emergence of rigid ryegrass. All herbicides were more effective in reducing the number of plants, spikes, dry matter, and seed production of rigid ryegrass in combination with tines than with discs. However, in the absence of herbicides, plant and spike numbers, plant dry weight, and seed production of rigid ryegrass were significantly lower where discs were used to sow, rather than tines. In the absence of herbicide, rigid ryegrass was less competitive with wheat under the disc-sown systems. The response of grain yield to herbicides was greater under the tine-sown systems than the disc-sown systems.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] has long been used as a forage crop but its morphological development and forage potential have not been studied extensively. A study was conducted using oilseed soybean cultivars of different maturity to determine their morphological development, forage yield, seed components and seed yield at the University of Ankara, Turkey. Five soybean cultivars OAC Salem (earliest), OAC Bayfield (midearly), OAC Eclipse (mid-early but later than OAC Bayfield), OAC Glencoe (full-season soybean) and SA.88 (late), were used in the study conducted in 2000 and 2001. The full-season cultivar OAC Glencoe was the tallest cultivar, and had the highest levels of fresh and dry matter yield and crude protein yield among soybean cultivars in both years. Therefore, OAC Glencoe is considered to be the most suitable soybean cultivar for forage production when intercropped with corn in Ankara region of Turkey. However, attention should be given to the earliest maturing cultivar OAC Salem that had the highest seed yield and better relative seed composition of all the cultivars.
